Alcohol addiction treatment VERESIES CLINIC offers treatment of alcohol dependence. The program is offered both as an inpatient and outpatient program. It offers an intensive program of personal Psychological Rehabilitation as well as the treatment of co-morbidity, namely the existence of dependence accompanied by a mental disorder. One of the key elements of the therapeutic process is to diagnose the problem. A good and thorough history taking and the use of tests can help the therapist easily diagnose the problem and the stage which the person seeking help is going through. The big problem facing the family and the environment of the alcoholic is when the person himself will recognize the problem and will decide to seek help. This is necessary because: a) if the addict is not aware of his situation he will not seek help and b) when the therapeutic effort will start, he can not be involved in the therapeutic process. THE THERAPEUTIC INTERVENTION The therapeutic intervention includes two phases: 1. Physical detoxification 2. Psychological Detox Detoxification The first phase seeks to address the withdrawal symptoms that may occur when reducing or stopping drinking. Below are some of the main symptoms of the withdrawal syndrome: SYMPTOMS OF THE AUTONOMOUS CENTRAL NERVOUS SYSTEM: 1 / 6
Tachycardia Tachypnoea -rapid breathing Trembling hand Strong and involuntary movements of the eyelids SYMPTOMS OF THE GASTROINTESTINAL SYSTEM: Nausea Vomiting Anorexia PSYCHOLOGICAL SYMPTOMS Bad mood Stress Nervousness Irritability Sleep disorders SYMPTOMS OF THE CENTRAL NERVOUS SYSTEM 2 / 6
Epileptic seizures Delirium tremens. Serious complications of alcohol withdrawal symptoms are grand mal type epileptic seizures and privative alcoholic delirium known as delirium tremens THE THERAPEUTIC CONTEXT The treatment of alcohol withdrawal symptoms has two main objectives: a) To assist the patient to deal with the withdrawal symptoms in a safe way and a pleasant manner. b) To strengthen his incentives and efforts to stay clean from alcohol. The treatment of withdrawal symptoms can be done in the following ways: 1.Outpatient therapy It is applied when a person declares readiness to participate in therapy, when the symptoms are mild or moderate and when there is a family and or another support system. 2. Closed inpatient hospitalization. It is applied when several outpatient based healing efforts have failed; when a person declares inability to follow an outpatient program; in the absence of family or other support systems; when symptoms are very severe; and at the presence of psychopathology or suicidal ideation. Proper assessment of the severity of symptoms is very helpful to determine the appropriate therapeutic intervention. A SHORT TERM THERAPY IN VERESIES CLINIC (UP TO 7 DAYS) 3 / 6
After taking the history and setting the stage of alcohol abuse / dependence and the severity of possible withdrawal symptoms, a therapeutic plan is drawn that includes: 1.Pharmaceutical intervention (benzodiazepines, culture, hydration, vitamins and others). 2. Psychotherapy intervention, personal counseling, enhancing motivation, mobilization of the family system. Inpatient treatment in the Clinic, under normal circumstances and without the existence of possible complications from other systems and organs of the human body, takes up to 7 days. The biological defense for preventing relapse of alcohol abuse is achieved by administering NALTTREXONE pills or by placing a double subcutaneous NALTTREXONE implant. PSYCHOLOGICAL DETOX / RECOVERY After treating the symptoms of the withdrawal syndrome, the alcohol user enters the second and most important phase of the treatment process, namely the rehabilitation. The objective in this phase is to reduce the desire for alcohol and prevent relapse. At this stage of treatment it is very important to involve the family system in subsequent programs which will ensure the addict s continuity in the abstinence of alcohol. "STEP BY STEP" INTENSIVE STRUCTURED INDIVIDUAL THERAPEUTIC PROGRAM REHABILITATION FROM ALCOHOL 4 / 6
The use and abuse of alcohol causes severe physical dependence and strong psychological dependence. To avoid certain deprivation and psychiatric problems, the problem is often necessary to be dealt with pharmaceutical means. The psychological detoxification and continued abstinence from the use require the participation in a psychological support program. The" Step by Step" program is a structured individual rehabilitation program based on rational-emotional-behavioural therapy. It can be applied at any stage of alcohol usage. The Step by Step program is applied on very regular individual meetings lasting half hour each (according to the needs of the patient) by a trained psychologist. After the successful assimilation of the previous step, the program is applied gradually and step by step covers the following main aspects: 1. Recognition and acceptance of problem 2. The relation of the patient to substance dependence and dependent conduct. 3. The psychological condition of the patient - psychometric test. 4. Psychoeducation 5. The existence of motivation; searching for and enhancing motivation. 6. Changing attitudes and beliefs about the phenomenon of drinking alcohol. 7. Active participation / planning / changing behaviour associated with the use. 8. Demarcation of relations / place/ time. 9. Setting goals 10. The problem of use and the family of the patient / co-dependence / allies. 11. Preventing relapse It is also suggested to addicts and their families to be involved in treatment programs at home as well as in group psychological rehabilitation programs. Regular participation in self-help groups for 5-10 years after the therapeutic intervention is something that keeps the addict from relapse. 5 / 6
