Instructional Design Document Done and Done Solutions Resume Writing 101 I. Introduction (Executive Summary) - 1 page a. Brief background/history of problem or need and its importance, target audience, and stakeholders (1 paragraph) The Academic and Career Advising center routinely advises students about how to write resumes and cover letters. To make their advising more immediate, and also able to answer basic questions, Thomas Rodgers (the director of the Academic and Career Advising Center) (latter referred to as ACAC throughout the IDD) wants an ILM to be developed to bring more student interaction and understanding to the importance of resume writing. The target audience is CSUMB students of any age and degree program. The stakeholders include the Academic and Career Advising Center, CSUMB students, and Done and Done Solutions. b. Brief purpose, goals, and objectives of the instruction (1 paragraph) The project aims to establish an ILM where students are able to view and successfully create a personal resume directed towards a desirable position. The ILM, which will be housed on the Career Advising website, will act as an enhancement to their website and the face- to- face services that the center provides. The students will have the opportunity to work at their own pace and continually review the information as needed. Due to the future creation of this ILM, advisors will have the ability to open their schedules, which in return will allow them to help students with more intensive needs. Ideally, this ILM will become a quick reference for students to improve their resume writing skills. c. Ethical considerations if any, which may affect the development, implementation or evaluation of the instruction. (1 paragraph) The only ethical consideration to be considered is that the diversity of CSUMB, especially with its focus in the school s mission statement, should be celebrated in all aspects of the ILM s design. As such, Done and Done Solutions will do its best to be as inclusive as possible throughout the design, creation, and the ultimate implementation of the ILM. d. Constraints (people, time, lack of resources, organizational culture), if any. (1 paragraph)

The project has few constraints, yet it does need to be designed using his formatting ideas and reference materials. Otherwise, the project is solely constrained by time, in which it needs to be completed by July 30 th. e. Resources and sources available. (1 paragraph) Thomas has provided the team with a PowerPoint and some sample resumes to be used in the ILM. Thomas wants us to only use these materials, and videos that we will shoot at his office, within the ILM. f. General timeline and costs for development, implementation, and evaluation. (1 paragraph) 1. July 1 st Take videos for ILM 2. July 5 th Send Thomas skeleton ILM 3. July 12 th Provide Thomas updated ILM 4. July 30 th Complete ILM and send it to both Professor Lockwood and Thomas No costs will be incurred during the creation of this design, as everything will be provided by either the ACAC, Swift Photography, or Done and Done Solutions. II. Analysis a. Needs analysis i. What is happening now? Currently, the ACAC provides resume advising in person, but does not provide any online materials for students to access. ii. What should be happening? This ILM will allow the ACAC to answer student questions completely or to allow students to form an idea of how to write a resume before coming into the ACAC office, by allowing students to access information through a completely online module. 1. How wide is the performance gap between "what is" and "what should be?" Students need more instruction on resume writing, but the primary goal of this ILM is to allow instruction on resumes to be more available to

students. Currently, it is difficult to know how wide the performance gap actually is as it is completely dependent on each student s background knowledge of the topic. As such, the ILM aims to get each student to an area of relative expertise on resume writing. 2. How important is the performance gap? It is important for students to know the how to write a resume. But, the project is mainly meant to be an extension of what the office already provides, in terms of instruction. As such, the performance gap is important, but want necessarily be fully instructed towards within the ILM itself. 3. How much of the performance gap is caused by deficiencies in the knowledge, skills, or attitudes of the learner? This varies greatly upon the student and is realistically not known by Done and Done Solutions 4. What solutions are cost- effective and feasible? The ILM in its design will be a cost- effective solution, as the only cost to the ACAC will be in hosting the ILM on the internet. The entire design and development will be free of charge because the materials are provided by the ACAC and by Done and Done Solutions. 5. What unintended side effects of taking corrective action can be predicted? One potential side effect could be students using mainly the online module to learn more about resumes. While not necessarily a negative side effect, it could lead to students using less face to face advising services that are provided by the ACAC. b. Learner analysis i. What critical characteristics of the target population influence learning and transfer to their work? The most critical of characteristics include background knowledge of resume writing. Realistically, this ILM is not teaching work related skills. On the contrary, its skills are meant to help the target learner secure employment. As such, the ILM highly relies on the learner needing further instruction of basic

resume writing tips (and showing the importance of a good resume in the first place). If the target population is more skilled at writing resumes, then the ILM can be used as a refresher course. ii. Who is the intended and appropriate learner? Our target audience can include any CSUMB student. However, and more realistically, this ILM is intended for those students who have a distinct need of learning how to write a better resume. These students could range in age, ethnic and religious backgrounds, class level and major program, job titles, and academic standing. As such, the information will be informative in nature and not be biased towards any age group. However, this module is intended for students who are fluent in English, as there will be no other language options provided within the ILM. c. Workplace/Environmental/Setting Analysis i. What are the available resources, constraints and culture of the organization that will affect how the instruction is developed, delivered and applied by the learners? The resources of the learning environment will depend on the learner. The ILM will be hosted on the ACAC website and will allow the learner to learn the course material from anywhere with an internet connection. This will allow the leaner to pick an environment that will supplement their learning as best as possible. The constraints of the environment revolve around the same material. Due to the ILM being completely online, if a student does not have internet access, he or she will be forced to go a location that provides internet or to only access the course on campus. The culture of the organization should be helpful to the learner. If at any time the learner feels unsure of the material, they will be able to contact the ACAC for additional information and advising. ii. What is known about them? Little can be known about each student s individualized work environment and materials without a survey, or some other form of data

collection process being implemented. As such, no inferences to each student s knowledge, demographics, etc., will be made within this document. iii. Think about how these characteristics should be used in subsequent steps of the ADDIE process (Design, Development) A more complete learner analysis could be used to design a more specific learning module, or even supplemental modules that could be attached to this broader ILM. Furthermore, an equipment analysis could be conducted to see how many students have internet access and to see if a hard copy version of the ILM could better benefit some students (e.g. on a CD or DVD disc). In terms of the module s design, this ILM is going to be created in Articulate Storyline. As such, it may be useful to design a movie version and basic PowerPoint version to assist those learners who would rather have access to the course content alone. Course development and implementation seem to be appropriate based upon on who the ILM is designed for and for where it is to be stored for use. Lastly, a thorough evaluation process should be used upon completion of this ILM. The ACAC will be able to see if their learners are benefiting from the ILM and will be able to see if more materials should be made or changed if done so. d. Task/Work Analysis i. What are the tasks or content that needs to be taught? Tasks include: 1. Being able to write a resume 2. Understanding why a well- written resume is important ii. What is known about them? The ACAC has identified that students need more instruction upon these topics and that this ILM can give them a solid background knowledge introduction about resume writing. iii. Think about how these characteristics should be used in subsequent steps of the ADDIE process (Design, Development, Implementation and Evaluation) A prior skills and background questionnaire could be used to help, design and develop the course. If future designers were to have access to this information, then the ILMs could be further delineated in a way that could tailor

information to direct lacks of knowledge, skills, and attitudes needed by the learner. iv. Goals and Instructional objectives Goal: Creating effective resumes 1. Students will demonstrate their understanding of the importance of good resume writing on a multiple- choice test with 90% accuracy. 2. Students will demonstrate their ability to write an effective resume for the instructor with 100% accuracy. 3. Students will demonstrate their course content knowledge by passing each multiple choice quiz with at least 80% accuracy. III. Design a. Test instruments i. Type of testing identified Short knowledge based quizzes will be implemented throughout the design of the ILM using Articulate Storyline s built in quiz function. ii. Feedback/assessment examples provided Users will be able to get instant feedback about how they perform on the quiz. The ILM will also have users retake the quiz if they miss too many questions as to make sure that the learner is gaining as much knowledge and skills as possible before progressing further in the ILM. b. Organizational, delivery, and management strategies i. Delivery format identified and justifications for method The delivery format of the ILM will be online, with the ILM being hosted by the ACAC on their website. The reason being is that by delivering the module in this way, learners will be able to access it at any given time of the day and on their own device. c. Instruction i. Content: Learning theories and/or instructional theories identified For the ILM we will be concentrating on utilizing Gagne s 9 Events to deliver the key information to the learner. Each section of the ILM is going to concentrate on a major aspect of resume writing, taking the learner through the events leading up to an assessment. Various multimedia will be included in the

sections including still photos and video, as well as interactive points where students will have to identify the correct format and/or layout. The completed ILM will be delivered to the client either on CD or via as a finalized, published Articulate Storyline html application. This deliverable will be able to be easily added to their website and be accessible by all students. IV. Development a. Materials (list) i. Laptop with Articulate Storyline installed ii. Various informational documents supplied by Mr. Rogers iii. PowerPoint supplied by Mr. Rogers iv. Still shots and videos taken by Swift Photography. b. Time 8/4/13 7/30/13 7/25/13 7/20/13 7/15/13 7/10/13 7/5/13 6/30/13 6/25/13 6/20/13 6/15/13 Videos/Sglls Captured Skeleton ILM Completed Start Date Days Updated ILM Delivered Complete ILM Delivered c. Costs: i. The Articulate Storyline program and all camera equipment have already been purchased. The only cost is a factor of time. d. Process i. Gather information and documents from client.

ii. Take still photos and video of client interacting with students. iii. Convert preliminary PowerPoint into a presentable ILM. iv. Add in photos and video into ILM v. Final design implementation vi. Quiz questions added. V. Implementation a. Delivery (Who? When? Where? How?) The delivery of the ILM will take place solely online. It will be hosted on the ACAC website and will be used as an asynchronous form of instruction. It will be hosted at Mr. Rodgers discretion and will be available twenty four hours a day. As such, no formal instructor or staff need be online during one s use of the ILM. b. Formative evaluation i. Discussion of the most appropriate methods of evaluating and improving your instruction. They should reflect the type of instruction/training you are developing along with a justification for the type/method selected, and how results will be used. Proposes and explains the following: 1. Why these formative evaluations are being done? Our formative evaluation will take place during the development of the ILM. As the ILM is being constructed it will be sent to Thomas Rodgers for evaluation and it will be evaluated individually, and as a group, by the design team itself. 2. What will be evaluated? The ILM s design and videos will be evaluated above all else. All of the course information will be provided by Thomas Rodgers, so the information will be pre- approved before the beginning of the design phase. 3. Who will be part of the evaluations? Both participants and observers. As of right now, only Thomas and Done and Done Solutions will be a part of the evaluation phase. However, Thomas Student Assistants may be used as evaluators to give an undergraduate student perspective on the ILM s design, information, and flow. 4. How the evaluations will be implemented? Methods, conditions,

location and timeline. The evaluations will be implemented either by a face- to- face meeting (preferable, but also dependent on schedules of both Thomas and Done and Done Solutions) or online. This method will allow for the evaluators to work through the ILM as if they were a student using the ILM for its intended purpose. There will most likely be a few times where this takes place. The dates will follow the Gantt chart provided above, with each evaluation period being the day before the completion date shown above. 5. How you plan to use the findings from these evaluations? How data will be collected? How do you plan to analyze the data? The data will be purely qualitative as we will have few, to none, actual target users use the ILM before it is delivered to Thomas and the ACAC department. As such, our analysis will be looking at recommendations, design flaws, and improvements that can be made to the ILM. As we perform each evaluation, we will update the ILM accordingly. ii. Example of Formative Evaluation tool - this component requires the development of a sample formative evaluation tool for use by your target audience. The tool should include questions appropriate to the evaluation of your instructional material by the target audience. You may put this in the Appendices. VI. Evaluation a. Summative evaluation i. Discussion of the most appropriate methods of assessing your learners. This should reflect the type of instruction/training you are developing along with a justification for the type/method selected, and how results will be used. The summative evaluation will most likely take place by Thomas and the ACAC after the ILM has been used with actual students. Unfortunately, this cannot take place during our time with the ACAC, but it will allow Thomas to further delineate what needs to be used in future versions of the ILM. Done and Done Solutions will work closely with Thomas to see if we can help create summative evaluation tools for him to use in the future.

However, our proposed plan would be a survey that could be provided to students. The students would be able to share what they think was useful, where they needed more content knowledge, and what they would change if they had the chance. By doing this, the ACAC will be able to gain a wealth of knowledge about future changes they could make to the ILM. ii. Example of Summative Assessment include in the Appendix a sample actual summative evaluation tool for use by your target audience. The tool should include questions or means appropriate to assess the learning achieved by the target audience after taking your instruction. May optionally also include Pre- Assessment tools to assess the entry level skills and knowledge and attitudes of the target audience (commonly known as a Pretest). VII. Appendices
