Preparing for a College Search

A Good Fit College Choice is About FIT: Social- is it a good match? Will I be happy outside of class? Academic- Does it offer what I want? Do I meet admission requirements? Financial- Can I afford it? 2

Choosing College Priorities Location Setting Size Social Life Special Services (LD) Academics Cost Admission criteria

College Searches Some recommended sites: Use more than one search site!

Narrowing Choices Get on college websites! Payscale.com Hot majors Return On Investment Collegenavigator.gov Graduation and retention rates Loan default rates Average per year tuition increases Visit Colleges colleges.usnews.rankingandreviews.com

What information do college admission officers review? Strength of high school course selections Grades / Overall GPA (some recalculate) Admission Test Score Essay Teacher and counselor recommendations Rank we use deciles Student s demonstrated interest Personal accomplishments Personality characteristics Courses in progress in Senior year

Admission Plans Regular decision- apply by a specified date and receive a decision at a specified date. Under Regular Decision you may see: Early Decision- Apply by a stated date and if admitted must attend this school. A student can apply to other schools but only one ED. (binding) Early Action- Apply by a stated date and receive a decision well before the college s regular response date. Not obligated to attend. (non-binding)

Restrictive or Single Choice Early Actionstudent can only apply to one school i.e. no other EA or ED school. Some colleges permit EA applications to public colleges. Rolling Admission- no stated deadline datethis really means First Come, First Served.» Sometimes you will see a PRIORITY deadline date! Open Admissions- students are accepted upon applying.

Admission Tests PSAT/NMSQT - Expect results in January Students register on their own to take the SAT, SAT Subject tests or the ACT. SAT optional listing

Testing Schedule Sophomore Year PSAT/NMSQT- October ACT/SAT Combo test April Subject Test- if you are in AP US History then it is advisable to take that Subject Test. Junior Year PSAT/NMSQT October SAT/ ACT- each at least once in Junior year *I recommend no sooner than January *Repeat the test that is the strongest *Research shows more than 3 times is not fruitful Senior Year It is fine to take an SAT or ACT in the beginning of the senior year Subject Tests If required by the colleges on your list- May is often an excellent testing date as it is when the AP tests are given and the student is most prepared.

Money and College Financial Aid - % of need met Institutional money Scholarship opportunities- academic, athletic, leadership, art, etc. Check on college websites Use Net Cost Calculators on college websites or use the financial aid 4caster on Hidden costs- application fees, test fees, sending test fees

Merit Scholarship Tips There is more than $11 billion in merit scholarships available to students from colleges Not just for A students Many awards emphasize leadership or school involvement Nearly all colleges offer merit aid scholarships (private usually more) Many awards can be renewed year after year Investigate college websites Read mail sent by colleges

Scholarship Resources Fastweb.com - Private scholarships Fafsa.ed.gov - Free Application for Federal Student Aid Studentaid.ed.gov - The federal government s website about paying for college MeritAid.com - $11 billion in merit scholarships Finaid.org - Free student resource for learning about all types of financial aid INDIVIDUAL COLLEGE WEBSITES
