1 LOG BOOK ENTRY SAMPLE: LOCAL GOVERNMENT PLANNER EXAMPLE This individual Log Book Entry Sample should be used in conjunction with the complete Log Book Guidelines for Candidate Members working to complete the Log Book requirement documenting their responsible professional planning work experience, in partial fulfillment of the requirements for admission as a Certified Member and Registered Professional Planner with the Planning Institute of British Columbia. Areas of Responsibility: Reporting to the Senior Planner in the department, and managing and supervising the work of the consultant, my responsibilities involved: Planning, conducting and managing meetings between the consultant and key District staff to review and disseminate the Terms of Reference for the project; Managing the preparation of the report by the consultant and reviewing the report; and Forwarding the draft report to relevant agencies and facilitating comment, feedback and input. Outcomes: A final report was developed and submitted under my name, to the Director of Planning, for ultimate incorporation into the new land use plan. 3 Hamlet Study: Process: Research & Policy Planning Subject Matter: Community Land Use Planning Work: During this period, I was tasked with developing and finalizing a work program for the District s Hamlet Study to determine and make recommendations for the future landuse and policy designations for a small community within the District. Areas of Responsibility: Reporting to the Senior Planner in the department and supervising junior planning department staff as required, my responsibilities involved: Developing, preparing and implementing a consultative survey and questionnaire of local residents attitudes and perceptions of growth; Undertaking research and analysis to gather background information on factors affecting growth and development; Compiling and analyzing consultation survey results; Identifying a possible growth strategy for the community; Developing and preparing information materials for a public consultation meeting; Delivering an information and background presentation at the public consultation meeting; Reviewing and evaluating public comments; and Preparation of a final report and recommendation to Council. Outcomes: A final report and recommendation (that the community be officially designated a Hamlet in the District, with the accompanying growth strategy) was developed and submitted under the name of the Director Planning and after review by the District Manager for approval and adoption by Council. Hamlet of Anytown OCP Review Public Consultation: Duration of Planning Work: 2.5 months Full Time Equivalent Process: Policy Planning & Public Process Subject Matter: Community Land Use Planning Work: During this period, I was tasked with developing and implementing the consultation portion of a local community OCP review being undertaken by the District. Areas of Responsibility: Reporting to the Senior Planner in the department and supervising junior planning department staff as required, my responsibilities involved: Developing, preparing and implementing a community questionnaire of local residents on a wide range of land use questions and issues; Undertaking analysis and research to develop preliminary recommendations regarding growth of the Hamlet; PIBC Log Book Entry Sample Local Government Planner (Revised: June 2012) Page 3 of 5

4 Developing and delivering a presentation of the results at a public meeting and respond to questions and comments; Evaluating comments and identifying any outstanding issues; and Working with a local community association to develop and arrange a working group of residents to discuss issues further and provide ongoing input. Outcomes: A set of draft recommendations was developed and incorporated into the OCP Review, and a structure and process for ongoing community input and discussion was developed, established and implemented. Rural Area Golf Course Policy Review: Duration of Planning Work: 2.0 months Full Time Equivalent Process: Research & Policy Planning Subject Matter: Rural Land Use Policy Planning Work: During this period, I was tasked with undertaking a review and developing new and revised policies with respect to the regulation of golf courses in rural and agricultural areas of the District. Areas of Responsibility: Reporting to the Senior Planner in the department my responsibilities involved: Conducting background research and analysis on municipal approaches to the regulation of golf courses in rural areas; Examining existing regulations and related key issues in the District; and Preparing a draft rural areas and golf courses policies, in the larger context of rural and agricultural areas policies of the District. Outcomes: A final report and set of draft policy recommendations was developed and submitted under the name of the Director Planning and after review by the District Manager for approval and adoption by Council. Ongoing Development Planning & Implementation: Process: Development & Implementation Subject Matter: Community Land Use Development Planning Work: During this period, I was tasked with receiving, reviewing and managing a number of development proposals for various development projects in the District. 5 Areas of Responsibility: Reporting to the Senior Planner in the department responsibilities involved: Liaison with proponents, developers, consultants, residents and relevant departments and agencies; Evaluating supporting department reports (including engineering reports); Evaluating public comments on proposals; Reviewing and analyzing the proposals; Preparing information reports on each proposal; Making presentations on the proposals at statutory public meetings; Formulating and delivering professional planning recommendations on each proposal. Outcomes: A final report and planning recommendation was developed and submitted for each proposal under the name of the Director Planning and after review by the District Manager for approval and adoption by Council.
