A LETTER FROM THE BROTHERHOOD Gentlemen and Parents, The Beta Rho Chapter of Sigma Nu has put together this packet of information with the intent of helping you to make an informed decision about which Greek organization to join if you so choose. Sigma Nu was founded on the principle of non-hazing, and we continue that tradition here at the University of Pennsylvania. The brothers of the Beta Rho Chapter hail from many places throughout the United States and the world. We are involved in a variety of activities on campus, including intramural sports, student government, community service, and many others. Despite diverse backgrounds and interests, our dedication to the ideals of love, honor, and truth brings us together and makes our fraternity one of the best on campus. A continued adherence to these values has led to our 119-year existence at the University of Pennsylvania. If you have any questions about the brotherhood or the candidate education process, please don t hesitate to ask any of our brothers. Our current executive board s contact information can be found at Sincerely, The Brothers of Sigma Nu, Beta Rho Chapter THE CREED OF SIGMA NU 3 Beta Rho University of Pennsylvania

GOALS According to our National Organization, which consists of 279 chapters throughout the United States, the mission of the Fraternity is as follows: To develop ethical leaders inspired by the principles of Love, Honor and Truth. To foster the personal growth of each man s mind, heart and character. To perpetuate lifelong friendships and commitment to the Fraternity. The Beta Rho Chapter wholeheartedly agrees with these goals and additionally adds the following goals, which are more specific to the candidate education process: Teach the candidates how to be good students and brothers Build brotherhood and friendships between the candidates, current brothers, and alumni Develop respect for Sigma Nu, Beta Rho, and Penn EXPECTATIONS Candidateship is a mutual obligation, and we expect the level of commitment laid out in this packet throughout the candidate education process. Candidates are probationary members of this fraternity, and we reserve the right to end any candidate s pledge process at any time if said candidate does not act in accordance with the ideals of Sigma Nu, including honor and responsibility. WEEKLY SCHEDULE Monday: Study hours Tuesday: House Improvement Wednesday: Study hours Thursday: Candidate meeting Friday: Off Saturday: Bonding Event Sunday: Off 4 Beta Rho University of Pennsylvania

TIME BREAKDOWN Timeline: January 28, 2014 to March 7, 2014 Activity Time per event Bonding Event 4 hrs Candidate Meeting 2 hrs House Improvement 1 hrs Study Hours 2.5 hrs* Total Hours Per Week: 7* *Study hours are not included DESCRIPTIONS OF SCHEDULED EVENTS BONDING EVENTS: FEB 1 ST : NAME GAME This event will allow the candidates the opportunity to quickly learn information about each other and the Brotherhood. Candidates and Brothers will submit the following information about themselves: Hometown Date of birth College/major Favorite food, song, sports team, hobbies, etc. Participants will then be broken into smaller groups and given roughly 15 minutes to learn about each other personally. Then, we will mix up the groups and repeat the first step. At the end of the night, the candidates will compete against the Brothers in a quiz to see who learned more. Since the Brothers will naturally know more about each other, there will be a handicap to ensure fairness. FEB 8 TH : BIG/LITTLE REVEAL Throughout the rush process and the first week of the candidate initiation process, candidates will have ample opportunity to meet the Brothers of Beta Rho. Based on these interactions, we will ask the candidates to rank their big preferences for eligible Brothers. These rankings will be taken into consideration. Ultimately, the pledge team and members of the rush team will try to make the best matches based on how well we know candidates and Brothers. Bigs will serve as a personal mentor for candidates during the candidate education process. 5 Beta Rho University of Pennsylvania

Once bigs and littles are revealed, we will have a series of team based games during the night. Additionally, we will have Brothers and littles trace back their lineages as far back as possible. Alumni will be notified in advance if we expect that they will be called. FEB 15 TH : GAME NIGHT Candidates and current Brothers will be divided into teams. These teams will compete against each other throughout the evening in various games. We will ask candidates if they have any preferences/favorites for games. Brothers will also contribute with ideas. Additionally, we will continue to rely on the team building exercises from the International Association of Teamwork Facilitators website at the following address: FEB 22 ND : SENIOR STORIES / LUNCHEON The Candidates and seniors will be invited to the Chapter House (or to a restaurant if funds permit) to share stories and for a light luncheon. From our point of view, the goal of the senior stories is for the new class to get to know the seniors and vice versa. This works towards our goal of maintaining recent alumni involvement; in the past, it has often been our more recent alumni that have been the most help in job searches. Allowing the new class and the seniors to become acquainted helps this process because by the time the new class members are looking for jobs, the seniors are in positions to help them network. While all brothers will be invited to the luncheon, we feel it is particularly important for the candidates to learn about the recent history of the chapter from the seniors and to become acquainted with potential connections. Another important goal is for our seniors to become acquainted with the underclassmen and thus be more likely to contribute to the house in the future. MARCH 1 ST : BROTHER LED CAMPUS TOUR Continuing the theme of senior involvement and acquaintance and drawing upon their knowledge of the University and Fraternity, we plan to have the brotherhood and candidates take a short tour around the campus to point out historical landmarks. While the seniors will likely have the most to share about experiences around campus, we plan to have at least one of our active brothers who is a current tour guide come along to provide interesting information on the landmarks and University. If possible, this event may be replaced by a prestigious alumni speaker who either works at the University or in a field of interest to the candidates. MARCH 5-7 TH : INITIATION We will choose a date that that least conflicts with candidates and Brothers. DESCRIPTION OF WEEKLY EVENTS: LEAD (PHASE I): Candidates will be instructed to learn the content from LEAD Phase I: The Way of Honor as instructed. We will review the content from the online sessions during our weekly meetings. Additionally, we will quiz candidates on the material to ensure a basic understanding of the principles therein. The schedule for quizzes will be as follows: 1st Meeting (1/29): We will introduce the candidates to the LEAD program. 2nd Meeting (1/5): Session 1 (Fraternity) and Session 2 (History) 6 Beta Rho University of Pennsylvania

3rd Meeting (1/12): Session 3 (Leadership & Working with Others) and Session 4 (Sigma Nu: International Organization & Chapter Operations) 4th Meeting (1/19): Session 5 (Risk Reduction) and Session 6 (Values & Ethics) 5th Meeting (1/26): Session 7 (Alcohol and Misuse Prevention) and Session 8 (Leadership - Basics) 6th Meeting (1/4): Session 9 (Project Management) and Session 10 (Ritual The End The Beginning) The Facilitator s Manual for the above lead program can be found at the following address: (please contact the executive board for the password) CANDIDATE MEETING: This will be an amalgam of events. We will go through all the LEAD phases, do short team building exercises, and have a venting period. All team building exercises are taken or based on ideas from the International Association of Teamwork Facilitators. You can visit their website for more details on the activities. The venting period will give the candidates the opportunity to give us feedback on the New Member Education process and talk amongst themselves about any problems. HOUSE IMPROVEMENT: The Brotherhood and Property Company will work together to generate a list of desired house improvements that could be completed by the candidate class. The candidates will complete as many projects as time allows. Also, candidates will be provided with the proper equipment and safety materials for each project. Older members will provide assistance and training to candidates when necessary. Active Brothers frequently take on small house improvement projects in groups; the purpose of this activity is to introduce the newest class into a culture of taking care of our chapter house along with giving active Brothers specific times to work on tangible projects with the candidates. STUDY HOURS: We will book classrooms or study rooms where candidates can do homework or study. ADDITIONAL ACTIVITIES AND NOTES: We will have candidates reach out to alumni who are prominent in the field of study for a candidate. We will bring in speakers from student health and the library system to talk about health and time/study management. We will set up a schedule of Brother lunches or dinners, so candidates can meet every Brother before the New Member Education process is completed. After initiation, candidates will be promoted to full membership and won t have any further tasks to do to gain membership CANDIDATE BOARD We will hold election for the candidate class based on the executive positions (Eminent Commander, Lieutenant Commander, Treasurer, and Recorder) of the fraternity. Each candidate will be eligible to run for each position but may hold only one. Eminent Commander Organize and run candidate meetings Delegate the work of the class Work with the University of Pennsylvania and any other outside organization as the primary representative of the class 7 Beta Rho University of Pennsylvania

Lieutenant Commander Assist the Eminent Commander in his duties Assume the role of Eminent Commander in his absence Ensure class mates are maintaining effective study habits including school work and the LEAD program Treasurer Manage the class funds for projects Create a budget for any event related to the candidate initiation process (food, items, etc.) Collect receipts and handle any reimbursements in the class Recorder Keep minutes for all meetings Work with the Eminent Commander on agendas on a weekly basis Facilitate information between the Brotherhood and candidate class Depending on the size of the candidate class, we will add additional positions for election in order of importance in function and role to the actual chapter. We will hold these elections during the second candidate meeting. CLOSING REMARKS We understand that Greek life is not for everyone; however, we strongly feel that being a Brother of Sigma Nu has the potential to impact anyone s life positively both personally and academically. We have tried to be as straightforward as possible in this packet, but if anything is unclear we would like to again emphasize our openness to any questions or concerns you may have about the program. Thank you, Dennis Harte (Pledge Marshal), Cruz Vargas (Commander), and the Brothers of Sigma Nu, Beta Rho Chapter 8 Beta Rho University of Pennsylvania
