2 EXECUTIVE SUMMARY The Industrial Internet is characterized by fundamental changes in the locality, mobility, and source of high-value machine data managed for enterprise operations. A growing world of digitally enabled devices await a next generation of software that will drive automation across networks of interconnected machine devices in the field. Field-based device intelligence will require new software designed for low power, remote environments not yet capable of sifting and analyzing an ever-increasing volume of data input. This new class of software will unlock key features of software-defined functionality, like dynamic configuration and hardware-agnostic upgrade and deployment, while in a user-defined, programmable environment. 3 UNIQUE CHALLENGES AT THE EDGE There are critical challenges faced at the industrial edge that inhibit deployment of field-based edge technologies for machine asset operations. There will always be more data than can, or should, be moved to the center. The center, in this case, is characterized by increasingly powerful, and typically high cost data management systems with high level computational and analytical capability. These monolithic, multi-rack data center Goliaths were not designed for industrial field deployment where the data is. Decisions at the edge cannot be implemented in a vacuum. A predictive algorithm is only as good as state monitoring and long-term maintenance associated with it. This implies a dynamically changing semantic and data model at the edge with an ongoing need to review high volumes of data for small, but critical bits of insight. Operational bias is required by industrial control systems. Control networks - SCADA systems in the industrial space - are not intended to serve open-ended analytical requirements. Rapid prototyping, data exploration, ad-hoc requests, and dynamically changing source data collection requirements are not value-add features in a critical operational environment. These challenges are unique to the edge and not addressable by existing central data platforms - field based assets rarely deploy local to an enterprise data center or cloud. 4 EXARA IN THE FIELD Exara software brings high capacity data processing capabilities to field environments; deploying to a new class of powerful industrial box computing devices. A typical box comes in a low-profile fanless design featuring Intel or ARM multi-core CPU, hot-swappable solid-state storage and flexible serial and network connections. Once configured, an Exara software defined node collects high fidelity machine data from wireless sensors or PLC devices through direct driver-based interrogation (i.e. MODBUS) or through existing field gateway and machine data collection infrastructure. Leveraging a proprietary columnar-like data structure implemented as a dynamic buffer, Exara FieldCache makes very high volume machine asset data, and powerful analytical capabilities available to enterprise data consumers.
