5 Adventure...bring it on There is so much fun and adventure in Scouting that I m incredibly excited about my next few years as Chief Scout. What a year 2015 has been! The Year of Adventure has entertained and inspired Cubs across the UK, Fundays captivated over 7000 Beavers and Cubs, and Wintercamps were jam packed with over 4000 Scouts and Explorers eager to shake off the cold and get stuck into activities at Gilwell Park and Hawkhirst. As well as the annual Gilwell 24, Intense, and JOTA/JOTI, Scarefest was back for its second year. There was some excellent feedback from this Halloween event, so again this year the original one night stay will be a full weekend. It s not only new young persons events that Scout Activity Centres are focussing on; they ve launched more adult training courses too. Hawkhirst and Downe hosted the Skills for Residential Experiences course for the first time, Great Tower delivered adventurous permits such as climbing, hill walking, raft building and archery and Yr Hafod delivered the new Hill and Mountain Skills course. I m thrilled to see so many new and experienced adults in Scouting enrolling onto these courses. The skills, qualifications and experience gained as a result help to create the life-changing moments that set our young people on a path towards becoming active, caring and empowered young adults. As we enter the Cub Centenary in 2016, there s even more to celebrate. Throughout May, August and October, groups will have the chance to hold parties and attend adventure camps across centres that will include ghyll scrambling, sailing, and climbing. So make sure you join in the celebrations and make 2016 our best Scouting adventure yet! Bear Grylls Chief Scout /ScoutActivityCentres 5a

6 Welcome to Badge Programmes 2016 As this is the fifth edition of your Programme, Training and Event Guide, we ve crammed in more than ever before, introduced a Courses and Qualifications section, laid on new badge courses, produced more resources and residential ideas to support you and your group and we are offering even bigger events across our centres! There is even a pull out calendar of courses and events in the middle of this guide. As national Scout Activity Centres continue to innovate and respond to guests needs, over the past year we ve introduced new tented villages, improved centre facilities and added a number of new activity bases. Have a look at what s new at each of our centres on page 7b. Staged Activity BADGES By completing activities at Scout Activity Centres, groups may automatically cover some Staged Badge requirements. Rack up some Time on the Water hours while sailing, kayaking and canoeing. Log walks and expeditions will contribute towards Hikes Away and Navigator Staged awards. You can also complete your Emergency Aid Staged Badges at any centre except Yr Hafod. Look out for the Staged Activity Badge symbol. Emergency Aid These are fun and active training sessions with our qualified instructors. Available all year and at all centres excluding Yr Hafod. Water Sports Rack up some hours at Great Tower, Hawkhirst, Ferny Crofts, Crawfordsburn or Gilwell Park by kayaking, sailing or canoeing, which will count towards Time on the Water, Sailing, Paddle Sports and Nautical Skills Staged Activity Badges. Hill and Mountain Either exploring the activity centres or using them as a base to discover the surrounding area can qualify you for Hikes Away, Nights Away and Navigator Activity Staged Awards. If you need any advice or support in planning a residential, choosing an activity centre or deciphering permits and adult courses then visit scouts.org.uk/sac where there are resources, FAQs and a quick enquiry function to support you. 6a scouts.org.uk/sac sac@scouts.org.uk

8 Planning and Booking Planning a visit or residential can feel like climbing a mountain sometimes so at scouts.org.uk/sac there are resources to help you discover all of the options available to you from catering and transport to activities and fundraising. The new Module 38 Skills in Residential Experiences course is perfect for building your skill base and confidence. See page 14b for information. Also, feel free to visit us on site; just give us a call to book a tour at your convenience or visit the website for open day dates. Handy tips: 1. Many lodges and activities book up quickly, especially for summer, so get your provisional bookings in at least 6 months in advance. 2. Keep in mind that most of our activities and badge programmes are for group sizes of between 10 to 12. For bigger or smaller groups, the price will fluctuate. 3. Keep your options open to alternatives for reducing costs and making it easier for leaders such as the tented villages, self-led activities and full catering options. 4. Accompanying adults within the section ratio go free. Additional adults pay a fee for food and accommodation where applicable. Scout Activity Centres have revised the pricing structure for badge programmes, but will always favour Scouting groups. The aim has been to make pricing more transparent, consistent and fair for all. Our badge programme prices are based on the following: 1 session (1.5 hours) Half day (3 hours) Whole day (6 hours) Overnight camp (space only) Overnight camp (equipment provided) 5 per person 10 per person 20 per person 4 per person 8 per person Ferny Crofts has additional costs specific to its location and operation so prices may vary. This is why we display a from price for all badge programmes. Call your chosen centre to chat about all the options and how to get the best value from your stay. Our contact details are on page 2a. Fundraising We appreciate that finding the money to finance your trip to one of the Scout Activity Centres can be difficult. That s why we ve put together some ideas, information and links that you might find useful to help kick-start your fundraising. scoutactivitycentres.org.uk/whatwedo/funding 8a scouts.org.uk/sac sac@scouts.org.uk

25 Camp Activity Ideas Pet Stick Each person will need: A small stick, glue / sticky tape, scissors, googly eyes and a range of decorating materials (paper, pens, wool, pipe cleaners, glitter, etc). 1. Create a pet stick by decorating it with the materials provided (or with natural decorations that you find, such as leaves and grass). 2. You could choose a theme for your pet sticks, eg animals, monsters or mini-me (make them look like yourself). 3. Your challenge is to then look after your pet stick whilst on camp making sure they don t get lost, keeping them safe on activities, making sure they have somewhere warm and dry to sleep at night. Scouts and Explorers could post their stick diary entries or mini action movie on facebook.com/scoutactivitycentres or on Natural Paintbrushes Each person will need: A couple of clothes pegs, a collection of natural materials (leaves, weeds, flowers, feathers, etc), some paper, paint and water. 1. Go out and collect a number of leaves and flowers etc of different textures. 2. To create each paintbrush you will need a clothes peg and three medium sized leaves, or six blades of grass, or one feather or a bunch of other natural materials. It is best to keep the same type of material together for each paintbrush rather than mixing different textures. 3. Experiment with the different textures of each paintbrush on a piece of paper; some will be better for finer details, some will be better for big strokes and some will work better if you dab them. 4. Now it s time to create a masterpiece! Why not theme your pictures around nature and things that you would find in the wild? Forest Faces Each person will need: Clay-heavy mud / natural air-dry clay, leaves, small sticks and stones, acorns, conkers, grass, moss and an easily accessible tree. 1. Find a suitable tree for your forest face. (Please make sure you have the correct permissions to decorate your tree before you start). 2. Choose an area on the tree where you would like your design to go. Apply a thick layer of clay mud to the tree to create the base of your face. 3. Start applying your decorations to create features on your face, eg use moss and leaves as hair, use an acorn as a nose. You could also use a stick to help draw details such as eyebrows. Will you choose to create a happy face, a wise face or a scary face!? Stick Storytelling Each person will need: A stick, a piece of plain paper (A3 is best), scissors, sticky tape, colouring pens and pencils and a good imagination. 1. Find a stick and then tape the stick onto a piece of plain paper. 2. Create a picture on the piece of paper using the stick as something that is not a stick within the picture, eg. it could be a person, a pole used for balancing on a tightrope or even a giraffe. 3. Use the pictures to help tell a story, either individually or as a group. /ScoutActivityCentres 21a

29 An Everyday Adventure We call Scouting an Everyday Adventure because it encourages young people to challenge themselves and gives them access to so many amazing activities and experiences. Being part of Scouting makes adventure seem accessible everyday, but in the real world, outside of Scouting it is much harder to come by. This potential for adventure doesn t happen by magic. It takes dedicated volunteers, high quality facilities and a movement willing to put young people in the driving seat. Our Activity Centres help volunteers to deliver the 6-25 Programme by facilitating things such as nights away and exciting, challenging physical activities. They provide courses that allow adults to support young people. They show those who aren t currently involved in Scouting just how everyday adventure can be. We want to see more young people delivering these outdoor activities, enjoying nights away and joining this life-changing movement. As a Deputy UK Youth Commissioner, and an imminent Mountain Leader trainee at Great Tower, I m incredibly proud of the role Scout Activity Centres play. However you decide to get involved this year, we hope you share our pride. Jay Thompson Deputy UK Youth Commissioner 4b scouts.org.uk/sac sac@scouts.org.uk

30 Welcome to Courses and QualiFIcations 2016 This fifth edition of the Programme, Training and Event Guide details even more courses that aim to enable Network and adult members to facilitate adventurous experiences with and for young people. In addition to the course dates in this booklet, groups of people who wish to complete a qualification can do so on a more suitable date. Just contact your chosen centre to discuss further. Grants and Funding Key The Scout Association is aware that some people may need additional financial support to attend courses and achieve skills, qualifications and permits. The internal grant-making body of the Scout Association, the Development Grants Board (DGB) holds funds to support a range of course places and funded just over 2600 of course costs for over 25 volunteers in Adult volunteers can benefit from up to 50% off the cost of DofE Assessor training, Adventurous Activity Permits and other instructor skills training.
