1 Introduction and Background ANTERO DAM REHABILITATION PHASE III Denver Water s Antero Dam is a high hazard dam located near the headwaters of the South Fork of the South Platte River near Hartsel, Park County, Colorado. The dam was originally constructed 46 feet high and approximately 4,190 feet in length with a crest width of 16 feet. The upstream slope is about 1.5H:1V while the downstream slope has been regraded to slopes ranging from 2.25 to 3.0H:1V. The dam embankment currently consists of a puddle core and an upstream and downstream shell with a downstream filter trench, filter blanket, and toe drain system. The dam sits on up to 20 feet of alluvial material over bedrock. A shallow cutoff trench exists but does not extend to bedrock. As such, the dam has exhibited seepage from initial filling. Denver Water purchased the dam in 1923, and at that time, excessive seepage was noted. Over the last 90 years the dam has continued to seep and has been operated at varying water levels, either self-imposed or at the State Engineer s direction. The reservoir elevation is currently restricted to a gage/hydraulic height of 18 feet (~20,000 acre-feet) by the Colorado State Engineer. Denver Water is presently operating the reservoir at gage 16 feet (Elevation ) but will be draining the reservoir for the construction of this Project. Site Location Antero Dam is located approximately 65 miles southwest of Denver, Colorado, in the high plains of the South Park valley, at an elevation of 8962 feet. Due to the elevation of the site, the typical construction season is from May to November. The dam is accessed from U.S. Route 24, near U.S. Route 285. Project Description Antero Dam is being modified to meet present day engineering standards and regulations. The construction of these modifications has been separated into discrete construction packages. The ANTERO DAM REHABILITATION PHASE III Project is the third division of work for the modifications. The primary purpose of the Project is to construct a soil-bentonite barrier wall 5 feet into bedrock through the dam embankment along approximately 4,000 linear feet of the dam crest. The reservoir will be drained for the construction of the soil-bentonite barrier wall. The Project will require close coordination with Denver Water and will generally consist of: Site mobilization and demobilization. Construction of soil-bentonite slurry wall into the foundation through the dam embankment. Excavation and placement of embankment materials. Excavation, stockpiling, and placement of riprap and riprap bedding. Modifying existing instrumentation. Erosion and sediment control. Borrow development. Wetland and reservoir protection. Maintain communication system continuity.
