Swarm Scientific Objectives Objectives: the Earth Studies of core dynamics, geodynamo processes, and coremantle interaction, Mapping of the lithospheric magnetisation and its geological interpretation, Determination of the 3-D electrical conductivity of the mantle, Identifying the ocean circulation by its magnetic signature Objectives: near-earth Electromagnetic Environment Investigation of electric currents flowing in the magnetosphere and ionosphere, Quantifying the magnetic forcing of the upper atmosphere correction Resolution Magnetic field magnitude and vector components (0,3 nt magnitude, 1 nt vectorial) Electric field vector components (10 mv/m) ASI Info Day Danilo Muzi 18/10/2012 EOP Slide 4

Swarm Constellation Constellation of three identical satellites Two orbit side-by- side, decaying naturally from an initial altitude of 460 km to 300 km over 4 years The third maintains an altitude of about 530 km The inclination difference of 0.6 between the lower pair and the higher satellite ensures a 90 difference in orbital plane by the third year of operations ASI Info Day Danilo Muzi 18/10/2012 EOP Slide 5

Swarm Project Status Satellites AIT program is finalised. All system tests have been completed. Satellite Flight Acceptance Review (FAR) has been completed. Pre-Shipment Review (PSR) held in September Satellites and GSE are in their transport containers, ready to be shipped to the launch site. Ground Segment Ground Segment Acceptance Review (GS-AR) completed. Ground Segment Overall Verification (GSOV) completed. Simulation campaigns at ESOC will start in December (operators training). Launch Vehicle Launcher Design Qualification Review (DQR) completed in July Scientific Community Validation Teams have been identified. First Validation workshop has been held in June Constellation of three identical satellites ASI Info Day Danilo Muzi 18/10/2012 EOP Slide 6

ADM AEOLUS: ESA s wind mission Scientific objectives Improve understanding of 1. Global atmospheric dynamics/transport 2. Global cycling of energy, water, aerosols and chemicals through improvements of model dynamics How are they achieved? 1. Improved representation of winds in atmospheric analysis, in particular: a. Tropics: Wind fields governs dynamics b. Mid-latitudes: Intense storm developments and mesoscale circulation systems Benefits Better initial conditions for weather forecasting Improved parameterisation of atmospheric processes in models Advanced climate and atmospheric flow modelling Demonstrate the capabilities of space-based Doppler Wind LIDARs for global wind profiling and its potential for operational use ASI Info Day Danilo Muzi 18/10/2012 EOP Slide 13

Aladin measurement principle (= height) ASI Info Day Danilo Muzi 18/10/2012 EOP Slide 14 Wind and atmospheric optical properties profile measurements are derived from the Doppler shifted signals that are back-scattered by aerosols and molecules along the lidar line-of-sight (LOS)

Summary of Status Satellite: all items are ready for satellite FM integration except the Aladin instrument and one panel of the platform where the In-Situ Cleaning System will be installed. Aladin instrument: 1. Transmit and Receive Optics (monostatic configuration)- completed Electronic Units completed Laser Transmitter (FMA, FMB and FMC) in integration/refurbishment 2. Test of the FM-A Laser transmitter under low pressure (40Pa) oxygen conditions has been completed, ~150 Million shots. Most of the test objectives have been successfully achieved, e.g. no Laser Induced Contamination detected, stable beam profile and position, controllable output energy. Unfortunately, unexpected small laser damage sites were found on the UV optics exposed to the highest energy densities. Extensive investigations are being carried out to identify causes and remedies Launch: July 2015 (VEGA/Verta Launcher) ASI Info Day Danilo Muzi 18/10/2012 EOP Slide 15
