and recommendations with due regard to professional and ethical standards and expectations. Higher Education Achievement Report - Additional Information During the first year of this course you will participate in the Business PD, a unique provision of the University of Bedfordshire. This, along with the embedded Practice weeks, will enable you to work on practical/real issues in Accounting and business, and will also prepare you for your dissertation. In year 2, the theoretical knowledge along with the necessary analytical skills will be developed based on your selected options. At the same time the employability unit areer Planning will provide an opportunity for all attributes in development to be integrated with an understanding of the very dynamic labour markets both nationally and internationally and the ways that this course of study helps you become more employable and valuable assets for future employers. In year 3, the dissertation unit will provide you with an opportunity to identify a real issue and use your skills and knowledge to research the relevant question and provide useful recommendations. The Strategy and creativity Unit will put this effort in the context of real markets and will prepare you for entering the labour market fully equipped and ready to contribute by making a difference. As this positioning evolves throughout the course, it will change your learning to develop creative thinkers and intelligent practitioners with applied research skills: managers who bring change through solving complex problems in a dynamic business environment. Learning and Teaching The teaching you will experience expresses the Business School s commitment to practice-based education. Much of the course is built round real projects for real businesses. The practice of accounting, finance and management is at the heart of the teaching, combining the technical accounting and business management knowledge with skills such as communication, problem-solving and teamwork to make your experience as much like real business as we can make it. You will experience, for example: The first year Business Pods: integrated, project based units which will set Accounting with in the context of business as a whole and give you the chance to work with students on other business-related courses. Your main tasks on these units come from our business partners and are often real questions they want to get answered. Practice Weeks: each year you have three practice weeks where the whole timetable focuses explicitly on the practice of Accounting with and/or on securing a job. These include company visits, talks from accounting and business practitioners, workshops and personal advice on developing a good V, an intensive assessment centre exercise and at the end of your course, activities to prepare for entering the workplace. Project : you learn through managing a project, perhaps raising money for your favourite charity or organising an event for one of our business partners. You cover the principles through reading and lectures. Your other classes help you put the principles into practice and prepare for the practice projects of your final year. Final Year Practice Units: you do at least three projects. ne will be your specialist individual project. Another is an integrated project which explicitly extends across more than one business discipline which means that you work with one of more students bringing different areas of expertise, learning to collaborate and work across functional boundaries. In all cases projects address real problems or tasks brought to us by our business partners. You act as consultants, gathering data, developing and applying your analytical skills and using your knowledge to address the problem. There are few formal classes for the projects but you have the advice and support of a tutor available each week. omputerised Accounting: In the first year, the practice weeks will focus on developing students knowledge and ability to use computerised accounting systems. n successful completion of this course, students will have earned a certificate of competence and will be able to use this to secure relevant work. Specialist Individual Project: The final year specialist individual project is an opportunity to carry out an indepth investigation into a topical area or issue in accounting or finance or to undertake a project on behalf of a sponsor, potential employer or other suitable entity. To provide this focus on practice, you will need to do reading and preparation outside class so that you gain ourse Information Form (IF) QAP0015 Page 4 of 14

maximum benefit from the tutors who will be helping you apply your learning in practical ways. There will be a number of ways in which this happens: Seminars: tutors help you clarify your understanding and apply it to a case, an exercise or a topical debate. Advice and support for projects: individual or group sessions to have direction and advice. Workshops: practical sessions working on projects or task. Lectures: to supplement your own reading with a summary and explanation of key points. Developing your employability A key benefit of this course is that students obtaining the degree are in a uniquely beneficial position of having both accounting and business management knowledge and skills. This makes them very versatile in terms of employability. The course also looks to develop the soft skills now essential in many business roles, with students focusing on all types of communication skills, organisational skills and self-management skills. In the practice weeks students focus on looking at careers and matching them to their own skills, with talks from employers and professional organisations. Another vital skill that is developed is an awareness of how employers recruit graduates and students are taken through mock processes that include numeracy testing, interviewing and presentations. Students are encouraged to take a work placement during the course, as well as gain accreditation in leading accountancy software during practice weeks. Department (s) Accounting and Finance: Assessment In line with the Business School s commitment to practice-based education, a large part of the assessment will relate to your demonstration of your ability to do accounting and business management in practice. We will want to see that you understand the theory and have developed critical thinking skills which help you evaluate the relevance of what you have learned. All of this comes together in being able to demonstrate rigorous accounting and business management practice for a business. To assess this integration of theory and skills into sound practice, we use a range of methods. You will encounter many different kinds, including the ones listed below, some of which are used in combination; for example a report might be required as an outcome of a time-limited assessment task. Reports: you analyse a business problem and propose solutions. Presentations: present proposals as if to your boss, a board or a client. Time-limited tasks: on a set day, you will be given a task which you will need to complete in a set time, such as 48 hours or five days. Academic writing: used to demonstrate clear, critical thinking, you might be asked to write an essay or a short summary of a theoretical debate. Appraisals: just as in business, you use appraisals to assess your own learning and to set your personal and academic development objectives. Projects: these are assessed in a number of ways depending on the task defined by our business partner. Typically, you will need to prepare an analysis, report or presentation which is suitable for the business partner and a longer piece of work which sets out the behind the scenes work which underpinned the output for business. It is in the longer work that we expect to see explicitly your application of theory and critical thinking which underpin good accounting and business management practice. You will usually also prepare a project review. Project reviews: you analyse and evaluate the way you worked on a project and set out how you would work more effectively on a similar task in future. Unseen examinations: Questions are formed in a way that promote critical thinking and as you progress in your course they will reflect all those elements and attributes that are relevant to your level: From knowledge, comprehension and simple manipulation in the early stages, to application, analysis, appraisal and synthesis as you get closer to graduate. For all assignments you will have an assignment brief which clearly sets out what is required and you will be given the criteria which your tutors will use to mark your work. In some cases you will be involved in developing the criteria used to assess work, to grade your own work and to grade the work of your fellow students: this is all part of developing your understanding of the assessment standards and what is needed ourse Information Form (IF) QAP0015 Page 5 of 14

to do well at a task. You will receive feedback on all your assessments. If you use this feedback, you will be able to improve your learning and your grades on future assignments. After Graduation Due to the flexibility of the course, graduates can end up in a variety of positions in business, accountancy or the public sector. The course provides a foundation on which our graduates can build a variety of careers. They include subject by subject exemption from professional accountancy organisations like the AA and AIA. Student Support during the course 1 General student support e.g. living in Luton, disability advice, international student support, managing your studies etc. etc. - see 2 Things that make you miss classes, assignments, exams or even thinking of dropping out see 3 Things about your course - see your course coordinator Your course coordinator will advise you on the following Are you on the right programme? Ability to apply quantitative and qualitative skills to solving business related issues For ertificate of Higher Education in Accounting with ; Demonstrate basic knowledge of accounting and business principles within organisation settings Provide solutions in a range of different business contexts by using accounting and management principles. ourse-specific regulations None Teaching, Learning and Assessment The BA Accounting with has been developed based on Re8 which articulates the University of Bedfordshire s approach to creating an environment that supports effective learning and teaching. Appropriate curriculum design, realistic learning, employability and suitable assessment strategies are the basic ingredients of our approach to teaching and learning. In this context, four basic elements have been used in developing this course s teaching, learning and assessment strategy. They are: ritical and reative thinking: We believe that no good comes from purposelessly memorizing endless pages of text without critically analyzing and evaluating what is written. Students will be encouraged to receive, discuss and evaluate. Participation and Participatory Learning: Students will be motivated to be active participants during the learning process. Systemic thinking: The course combines accountancy with management in offering a range of flexible diet of options. It is very important for a student to understand that the individual theoretical or applied ideas taught in accountancy and management Units are not independent of or irrelevant to the world they live in. Real world examples are essential to explaining how the system works in reality, how it could be working normatively, and thus open the floor to discussing what kind of businesses, economies and therefore societies we want. ollaboration and Accountability: In today s world and particularly in Accountancy and, graduates must have the ability to work in groups, share ideas, contribute to projects and be dependable. The strategy followed in designing this course ensures that these aims will be achieved. During lectures students will be exposed to these theories and they will develop a critical understanding of how the theories have evolved over the years to meet the requirements of a developing and very dynamic world. Theoretical models will be put to test and a critical evaluation of their ability to tackle current accountancy and management issues and problems will take place. However, as students of accountancy and management, they should be aware of the danger inherent in analyzing theoretical elements of an unreal world. This course will fill the gap by providing students with an intimate knowledge of the structural issues organizations are facing and the way they are being approached / dealt with in today s social and economic discourse. ourse Information Form (IF2013-4) Page 10 of 14

Students will be able to apply accounting and management theories to real life issues. All technical and analytical skills to understand key developments in global markets will be developed. Seminars are designed to serve two main purposes: Equip the students with those analytical skills that will further enhance their understanding of the relevant theoretical models. Secondly, they will invite them to put those models into test and evaluate their validity in explaining today s economic affairs, evaluating current business policy and appraise firm and institutional behaviour. The ourse is structured in a way that allows knowledge and skills to gradually increase. Both the depth and breadth of critical understanding of the Accountancy and theories and their application in the decision making processes of individuals, businesses and organizations will increase. In Year 1 the basic principles of Accounting and Finance are introduced. At the same time, the Business PD provides students with an opportunity to understand the general business context and work with their peers from other degrees in discovering similarities and differences in a holistic approach, highly representative of today s business world. In Year 2 the two basic pillars of accounting are developed: intermediate financial reporting and intermediate management accounting. Alongside these, there are the options to select intermediate auditing, intermediate taxation, intermediate financial management and business research skills. The other Units will contribute to a broader development of student knowledge in areas that are very relevant to today s job markets. Year 3 will develop the student experience even further by analyzing the concepts of strategy and creativity in the context of global organizations. The final year specialist project will challenge students independent and creative thinking and will equip them with the ability to use the knowledge and skills acquired through their studies in order to demonstrate to themselves and to future employers how they have been developed into a graduate who can contribute to the development of a community, organization or professional group. The unseen examinations are a recurrent way of assessing students performance in the structure of this course. Questions in these examinations are formed in a way that promotes critical thinking and as students move up on the course levels they will reflect all those elements and attributes that are relevant to their level: From knowledge, comprehension and simple manipulation in the early stages of this course to application, analysis, appraisal and synthesis as they get closer to graduation. At the same time though, Accountancy and studies are not just the study of theories of the different business theories, but of their applicability to real life scenarios. It is the process through which students develop problem- solving skills using the techniques they learn when they study the different units of the course becoming therefore more skilled and alert individuals in an increasingly demanding world. Developing and assessing a range of skills is a key objective of this course s assessment strategy. It is designed to develop student knowledge and skills and there is a clear sense of progression, as students evolve during the course, both in choosing the right assessment strategy as well as the actual questions. A number of different assessment methods contribute in helping students achieve their goals and enhance their employability throughout this course and a pivotal element for all is that feedback will given back in due time so it is integrated in the learning process. Some of the different kinds of assessment are listed below and in some cases they will be used in combination, making sure however that there are no hidden tasks. A full list of how each Unit will be assessed is presented in the previous section Additional Academic Information ourse Information Form (IF2013-4) Page 11 of 14

Peer-assisted learning (PAL) The Business School is currently developing its PAL practice and has recently appointed its first PAL oordinator. The course team/department will adopt this evolving practice as it develops. Initial Assessment Where practical all units will have an initial assessment within 6 weeks. Units with an initial assessment within 6 weeks Intermediate Accounting Intermediate Financial Advanced Accounting Special Project in Accounting with Improving students learning ne of the differences between school and university is that you become an independent learner, taking greater responsibility for your own development. We help you take on this responsibility, providing intensive support in the early stages, developing your independence through the course and finally helping you think about managing your career and continued learning. At every stage, the aim is to make sure you are doing the very best you can to fulfil your potential and getting what you need from your time at the University of Bedfordshire. We adopt a business-style approach to supporting your development. At each stage the primary support mechanisms for your growing independence are your Personal Academic Tutor (or mentor) and regular selfappraisals, just as in modern organisations. In your first year you will complete a self-appraisal roughly once a quarter and review these with your Personal Academic Tutor, agreeing objectives for the next phase of your studies. The objectives will relate to building your academic skills and achievements and also to the opportunities you have alongside your studies to build a strong V. You will have feedback on your assessments, contact with your unit tutors and learning about how you work in a group and a range of other information to help you understand how you are doing. Your Personal Academic Tutor will help you use this feedback and information and will direct you to a wide variety of resources embedded within your course to help you develop basic or advanced skills needed for studying and for business such as Word, Excel, PowerPoint, numerical skills, writing, note-taking, etc. These materials remain available to your throughout your course and it is through all your first year units that you become familiar with them. Thus, in your first year you will be directed to some assessment options within your course which best stretch and develop your abilities to prepare you for future study. By the end of your first year, you will be used to setting realistic and challenging objectives for yourself, used to discussing them with your Personal Academic Tutor and used to finding resources to help you improve your own development and achievement. Through the second year, you still look at doing the best you can in your studies. Alongside stretching you on academic achievement, the focus of your Personal Academic Tutor turns increasingly to getting you ready to apply for placements, internships and jobs. Your self-appraisals and reviews with your Personal Academic Tutor will pick up your learning from the Practice Weeks which look at your employability. In the final year, you are demonstrating independence in working on projects. You still have a Personal Academic Tutor who is supporting you in building skills for work. At the end of the year, you have a unit specifically designed to help you manage your transition into work and to help you manage your personal development as you begin your career. Alongside this cycle of appraisal and review with your Personal Academic Tutor, you have access to students from previous years through a system of Peer Assisted Learning. At levels 4 and 5 they can help ourse Information Form (IF2013-4) Page 12 of 14

with a student perspective on how to get the best from your university Academic Integrity Your course prepares you to be a professional in business. So you build your understanding of professional standards from an early stage of your course. These range from punctuality to respect for colleagues, and behaviour in teams to conventions in communications. The standards we set for class and for interactions between students and tutors are those common in UK businesses. In addition, we help you understand the University of Bedfordshire standards in relation to academic work: your assignments must be your own work and be free of plagiarised content. As an Accounting with student, you will be expected to demonstrate the highest levels of ethics and professional conduct. Your general behaviour and attitude towards timekeeping and organisation is expected to be exemplary and beyond reproach. You should always look smart and reflect a professional image. You will be introduced to our professional standards at the start of the Business Pod. You may also be involved in developing contracts for how specific professional standards will be applied within particular groups or classes. Towards the end of your course, we develop the theme of professional behaviour by looking at how you can be most effective when you start a new job. We help you to fit in and make an impact. You will be given explanations of how to meet the standards of academic writing for your early assessments and be given feedback on whether you are meeting them. After the early stages of your course, penalties apply if you fail to meet the standards so we are careful to provide the support for you to understand what you need to do. HEAR implementation Both accounting and business management are professionally focused, practical disciplines. In this course, greater emphasis is placed on developing your practice and developing your employability. It is hoped that this will enable you to undertake an increased range of professional and volunteering activities that may be recorded on the HEAR. Internationalisation Both accounting and business management are international disciplines in their nature. In this course, you will be introduced to international accounting, to international corporate governance systems, and to managing international operations. ourse Information Form (IF2013-4) Page 13 of 14
