3 WELCOME Greetings Super Summer Institute Participants: Thank you for attending the 2016 Super Summer Institute (SSI). You are the pioneers in helping Louisiana students prepare for college and career. What you learn over the next week will enable you to return to your schools next month ready to prepare your students for credentialing opportunities that lead to successful adult lives. Through your efforts students complete a solid foundation of work skills and academic competencies. This foundation will enable thousands of Louisiana students to continue their education and training after high school, earning while learning in their early careers. Looking at the bigger picture I m happy to report Jump Start implementation continued to gain momentum in Louisiana teachers are earning industry-based credentials in unprecedented numbers. High schools around the state are expanding the number of Jump Start graduation pathways they will support. Next month we will start testing new ways to engage industry partners in expanding CTE opportunities for all of our students, with a focus on expanding Jump Start opportunities available for students with disabilities. Next month the Department s Jump Start team will also announce a number of innovative new Jump Start initiatives, including the Jump Start Video Network and the Jump Start Automated Text Response System. Thank you to the conference partners in planning this event and South Louisiana Community College and Lafayette Parish School System for opening your campuses to host the institute. And thank you, our attendees, for being a part of transforming career and technical education in Louisiana. Sincerely, John White Superintendent Louisiana Department of Education Jump Start Super Summer Institute 1

4 WELCOME Greetings Super Summer Institute Participants, I am genuinely pleased and excited to welcome you to the 2016 Super Summer Institute (SSI). Louisiana Community and Technical College System is honored to be a co-host for SSI with two outstanding partners. South Louisiana Community College graciously opened their campuses to host the event, and the Louisiana Department of Education worked tirelessly to coordinate the sessions. The institute is a collaborative endeavor providing secondary and post-secondary instructors access to instructor credentials supporting Industry-Based Certification instruction and student credentials. This year s conference is a great opportunity to continue the Career and Technical Education momentum that the Jump Start program has created with districts, parents, students, and business/industry partners around the state. My thanks to the many staff members from each conference partner, who played a role in organizing this year s conference. Thanks also to our many volunteers who have provided support to ensure the success of the conference. Once again, welcome, and thank you for coming. Please enjoy the conference and leave refreshed, encouraged, and equipped to continue to prepare Louisiana s citizens with the many career opportunities, available through Career and Technical Education programs. Sincerely, Monty Sullivan, President Louisiana Community & Technical College System Greetings Super Summer Institute Participants, It is my pleasure to welcome you to South Louisiana Community College (SLCC)!
