NEWSLETTER 4th February, 2016 Skye Primary School THIS WILL BE THE ONLY HARD COPY OF THE NEWSLETTER ALL OTHER NEWSLETTERS WILL BE SENT THROUGH TIQBIZ NEW STARTING TIME To ensure a smooth start to the school day the music will start to play at 8.47 each morning with the morning bell ringing at 8.50am. This first 10 minutes allows time for students to hang their bags, get out their school books and prepare for the start of the school day. This means that the student will be learning right on 9.00am. EXITING THE SCHOOL SAFELY To ensure all our wonderful students and parents get in and out of the school safely I have created a map to highlight the safest way to enter and exit the school. CAR PARK If you are parking in the car park and collecting your child please reverse park and walk through the gate at the northern end of the car park near the bike shed. Once you have collected your child from their class please exit the school the same way. From and there will be staff members assisting at the crossing near the gate. The staff car park is also OUT OF BOUNDS for all students WALKING / SCOOTING or RIDING Follow the concrete path on the western border of the school down to the bike shed. The shed has new racks to store the bikes and scooters and is locked during the school day by our school leaders. DRIVE THROUGH There is no time in which adults or children who are walking can exit the school via the drive through pick up. This dangerous practice it means pedestrians are crossing three lanes of traffic which is attempting to gain access to busy Ballarto Road. Drivers are not expecting pedestrians and exiting here is a tragic accident waiting to happen. Please walk around and follow the path as indicated above. BACK GATE The back gate leading onto the oval will be locked during school hours for safety reasons. All other times it will remain open. BALLARTO ROAD CROSSING We have a manned crossing and Elaine does a wonderful job. This is a very busy road and young students should be escorted over the road by an adult. Let s all work together to ensure everyone arrives and leaves the school in a safe manner. 1

THE CHOOK PALACE Over Summer Scott and Kristee from SME Constructions have been working all hours to complete three separate projects for Skye Primary School. The largest and most complex project was building the chook palace. Scott did an amazing job to construct the chook enclosure around existing trees. He designed and built an amazing chook house that has nesting boxes and areas for exploring and roosting. We could not be happier with the finished product and the kids are super excited to welcome in the new feathered enrolments. BIKE SHED Our wonderful PTF have asked Scott from SME Constructions to put in bike racks and scooter storage in the bike shed. He has done an amazing job and the kids love the fact that there is a proper safe place to store their transport. ALL ABOARD THE S.S. PREP SUCCESS Lastly the preps have a new piece of equipment to play on. The prep boat was very popular with our new prep students with most of them taking the boat for a quick sail around. 2

With all three projects Scott and Kristee heavily discounted their prices to help make our school even better. If you are in need of any quality building works please consider getting a quote. PAINTING CONTRACT I hope everyone noticed that the entire exterior of the school has been repainted over the holidays. There was a huge team of workers preparing and painting all the surfaces and the end result looks great. SKYE PRIMARY S CLASSROOM MANAGEMENT PROCESS As we begin a new year we thought it is a good time to remind parents of the processes we use when students make inappropriate choices in the classroom. The process is below for your information. This year you will also receive a note home for you to sign if your child has been removed from their class. We would appreciate your support in helping us to maximise the learning time for all students. RESPONDING TO INAPPROPRIATE BEHAVIOUR CLASSROOM TEACHERS Behaviour Management Skye Primary School has developed a consistent approach for addressing inappropriate behaviour and in dealing with management issues and implements a four stage process for classroom teachers: Warning Stage Time-Out Stage Withdrawal Stage Withdrawal to Administration Warning Stage Teachers help students to identify inappropriate behaviour. Classroom teachers provide scaffold and support to students to modify behaviour, and in doing so, redirect students to follow classroom and whole school rules. Students are reminded about the behaviour management process and following consequences if inappropriate behaviour continues. Reflection Stage The Time Out Stage allows students the opportunity to personally reflect on their own choices whilst remaining in the classroom. Students are encouraged to use Time Out as an opportunity to refocus. After five minutes students re-join the class. Withdrawal Stage The Withdrawal Stage is a chance for students to recognise that his/her behaviour is affecting others. Students are removed from the class to a buddy grade for 10 minutes and fill in a Reflection sheet. After the 10 min withdrawal from the class, the student is given the opportunity to make a restorative agreement that allows them to re-join the class again and demonstrate appropriate behaviour. A parent note will go home for a signature. Withdrawal to Administration Students who re-enter the class after their class withdrawal and continue to break the Whole School Rules will be withdrawn from the classroom by administration for the remainder of the session/day. Students withdrawn by administration may receive a middle level consequence. 3

In 2016 we will be explicitly teaching our school s Values. During 2015 the staff spent time writing statements that articulate what each of those values look like for our school community and each term we will focus our classroom wellbeing lessons on one. Term 1 s focus is on RELATIONSHIPS. Vision Statement : All students at Skye Primary School will be literate, numerate, creative and socially responsible community members Our School Values Relationships Respect Resilience Responsibility At Skye Primary School we create and maintain positive relationships At Skye Primary School we show respect and care about the feelings and rights of others At Skye Primary School we are resilient and work through challenges effectively At Skye Primary School we take responsibility for our learning, behaviour and school environment Relationship Statements: Focus for Term 1: We include others We co-operate with others We solve problems in a positive manner We appreciate the differences in others 4

GETTING TO KNOW YOU INTERVIEWS ATTENTION GRADE 1-6 PARENTS At School Council it was suggested that we could offer Getting to know you interviews for parents whose students are going into 2016 with a new teacher. These meetings would be for about 10 minutes and would give parents a chance to tell the teacher a little bit about their child. Please note: This is not a parent teacher interview where the staff will be reporting on student progress. The sorts of information that could be helpful to your child s classroom teacher could be: (Change in) Home circumstances Any medical issues that could affect the student Interests, likes and dislikes, strengths and weaknesses These interviews are not compulsory, but would definitely benefit both your child and the classroom teacher. A letter will be sent home next week for to all Grade 1-6 students giving parents the information regarding booking an appointment with their child s teacher/s. STUDENT ABSENCES A reminder to parents that all student absences must be reported to the school. If your child is away through illness, holidays or for any other reason please either send a note or phone the school absence line and press 1 please leave your child s name, grade and the reason why they are away. If you are going on holidays please make sure that your child s teacher and the office is aware of the dates. 5

CAMPS, SPORTS AND EXCURSION FUND FINANCIAL ASSISTANCE INFORMATON FOR PARENTS Every Victorian child should have access to the world of learning opportunities that exist beyond the classroom. The Camps, Sports and Excursions Fund helps ensure that no student will miss out on the opportunity to join their classmates for important, educational and fun activities. It is part of making Victoria the Education State and the Government s commitment to breaking the link between a student s background and their outcomes. CAMPS, SPORTS & EXCURSIONS FUND (CSEF) School camps provide children with inspiring experiences in the great outdoors, excursions encourage a deeper understanding of how the world works and sports teach teamwork, discipline and leadership. All are part of a healthy curriculum. CSEF will be provided by the Victorian Government to assist eligible families to cover the costs of school trips, camps and sporting activities. If you hold a valid means-tested concession card or are a temporary foster parent, you may be eligible for CSEF. A special consideration category also exists for asylum seeker and refugee families. The allowance is paid to the school to use towards expenses relating to camps, excursions or sporting activities for the benefit of your child. The annual CSEF amount per student is: $125 for primary school students $225 for secondary school students.
