(Past newsletters are available online for your review to help you get started.) Nominating Committee Coordinator Members of the Nominating Committee are Jenn Morgan, Jeannine Wargo & Holly Wickenhagen. Three Nominating Committee members are elected by the General Membership at the annual September General Membership meeting. 5 The following information may be helpful. The music classroom expectations are these: Listen carefully to directions. Raise your hand to speak. Participate in all activities. Stay focused. Show your best effort. The music curriculum is aligned with Washington State Arts Essential Academic Learning Requirements. These may be viewed online at the OSPI Arts web site Music class involves singing, moving, and playing instruments. Through these activities, students experience the elements of music rhythm, pitch, melody, harmony, form, timbre, and notation. Full day kindergarten students receive two 40 minute music classes per week. Half day kindergarten students receive one 40 minute music class per week. The focus of music instruction in kindergarten is learning to recognize and maintain a steady beat, match pitch using five tones, and to aurally recognize that tones move high, low, and repeat to make up melody. In addition, students are introduced to different timbres (unique sound qualities of instruments and voices) and the expressive qualities of tempo and dynamics. First through third grade classes receive two 40 minute music classes per week. The focus of first through third grade music includes but is not limited to accurate pitch matching, reading and playing rhythm patterns, applying expressive qualities in performance, recognizing form, distinguishing melody and harmony, and learning to read music notation. Music is graded according to each of these elements - rhythm, pitch, melody, harmony, form, timbre, notation, and expressive qualities. Third grade students begin playing the soprano recorder after winter break. Information regarding purchase of a recorder will be forthcoming. Parents are always welcome to visit your child s music class. Please contact me if you require further information. Teresa Jeffreys Music Specialist
