Rationale for a Disaster Recovery Plan Need for DRP Identified in the District s Auditor General Report Best practice for IT organizations Minimize disruption of services to students
How do we Prepare?
Integration with District Emergency Plans
IT Disaster Recovery Plan in COOP
IT s COOP - Disaster Recovery Plan
Principal Objective of Disaster Recovery Plan The principal objective of the IT disaster recovery (DRP) plan is to develop, test and document a plan which will help Scottsdale Unified School District recover as quickly and effectively as possible from an unforeseen disaster or emergency which interrupts information systems and business operations.
Purpose of the IT DRP To ensure that all disaster team members fully understand their duties in implementing such a plan The need to ensure that proposed contingency arrangements are efficient and cost-effective
Purpose of the IT DRP The IT DRP should cover all essential and critical infrastructure elements, systems and networks, in accordance with key business activities.
An Ongoing Process The DRP should be periodically tested in a simulated environment to ensure that it can be implemented in emergency situations and that the management and staff understand how it is to be executed.
Ongoing Development of the IT DRP The DRP is to be reviewed periodically (semi-annually) and kept up to date to take into account changing circumstances. A detailed list of all internal/external members to be notified during the disaster recovery process A plan to acquire hardware for rebuild of technology infrastructure

Plan Triggering Events Key trigger issues that would lead to activation of the IT DRP are: Total loss of all communications Total loss of power Flooding of the premises Loss of the building
Activation of Disaster Recovery Response Team When an incident occurs the Disaster Recovery Response Team must be activated. The Disaster Recovery Response Team will then decide the extent to which the DRP must be invoked.
Activation of Disaster Recovery Response Team (DRRT) Responsibilities of the DRRT are to: Respond immediately to a potential disaster and call necessary services Assess the extent of the disaster and its impact on the business, data center, etc. Decide which elements of the DR Plan should be activated Ensure employees are notified and allocate responsibilities as required
Activation of Disaster Recovery Response Team Establish facilities for an emergency level of service within business hours; Restore key services within business hours of the incident Recover to business as usual within hours/days after the incident Coordinate activities among disaster recovery team, key stakeholders, etc. Report to the CTO, CFO and Senior Leadership team
