2 INTRODUCTION AND OBJECTIVE OF THE COURSE With the ever increasing demand of power and power shortage faced by the electrical utilities in India specially requires attention to harvest the power requirement with the integration of renewable energy sources. The Kyoto Protocol sets targets for the countries all over the world to reduce greenhouse gas emissions to at least 5% below the 1990 level in the commitment period of 2008 to Due to the set targets, more and more countries are ratifying the 1997 Kyoto Protocol, and wind power has become one of the most effective ways to reduce the emissions to the set target and protecting the environment as well as meeting the green power requirements. With the growing interest of many countries all over the world towards the wind power conversion, there is a need to address the issue of wind power conversion systems to make aware the young faculty members, research scholars, and persons form industry/ R & D about the wind energy conversion systems. Wind is a form of solar energy. Winds are caused by the uneven heating of the atmosphere by the sun, the irregularities of the earth's surface, and rotation of the earth. Wind flow patterns are modified by the earth's terrain, bodies of water, and vegetative cover. This wind flow, or motion energy, when "harvested" by modern wind turbines, can be used to generate electricity. The main objectives of the course are to impart knowledge to the participants about the basics of wind energy, wind turbines, their components, and electricity generation from wind systems, and wind integration issues in modern power sector. This course will also provide a platform to the participants for an in-depth discussion on the various challenges in wind energy conversion systems. The course will benefit participants from academics, R&D institutions, professional engineers from utilities, and research scholars at masters and PhD programs. SCOPE OF THE COURSE The course will cover the following topics: Fundamentals of Wind energy, Types of wind turbines, Wind turbine aerodynamics, Wind turbine performance, Wind energy conversion technology, Power generation systems, Wind power in power systems, Applications in power systems ABOUT THE SCHOOL OF RENEWABLE ENENRGY AND EFFICIENCY The institute has recently come up with the School of Renewable Energy & Efficiency which is jointly run by the Departments of Mechanical Engineering and Electrical Engineering. The school has started a new M.Tech. program on Renewable Energy Systems from the current session The program is multi disciplinary in nature and hence the faculty members from both Departments are also engaged with the school.

3 ABOUT THE INSTITUTION National Institute of Technology Kurukshetra, Haryana is a premier Technical Institute of the region. The institute started working as Regional Engineering College, Kurukshetra in Like other Regional Engineering Colleges of India this institution too, had been a joint enterprise of the State and Central Governments. This Institute was conferred upon status of Deemed University on June 26, Since then it has been renamed as National Institute of Technology, Kurukshetra. For providing instructions in various disciplines of Engineering and Technology at the Undergraduate and Postgraduate level, the Institute offers excellent facilities for advanced research in the emerging areas of Science and Technology. The syllabus and the curricula are constantly being updated to meet the growing demands and need of the country in different areas of technology. The infrastructure is geared to enable the Institute to turn out technical personnel of a high quality. THE CITY Kurukshetra, steeped in history and mythology, is a place of great spiritual significance, where Lord Krishna, delivered the divine message of "Shrimad Bhagwad Gita". The place from where knowledge spread far and wide was chosen as his capital by King Harshwardhana. It is one of the premier centers of pilgrimage attracting devotees in a steady stream all-round the year. Kurukshetra is a railway junction on the Delhi-Karnal-Ambala section of the Northern Railway. It is about 160 kms. from Delhi. The Institute campus is a 10 kms. from Pipli, a well known road junction on the Sher Shah Suri Marg and 5 km from Kurukshetra Railway station. WHO CAN APPLY Participants from academic institutions, utilities, industries, R &D centre can apply to attend the STC. The M. Tech. and Ph.D. students from other institutions can also apply to attend the course. The seats are limited to participants and will be given on First come First serve basis. On prior request, accommodation may be provided in the campus to outside participants on payment basis. REGISTRATION FEE The course fee for participants from R & D center/ Industry is Rs. 1000/- and participant from academia and institutions is Rs 500/-.The M.Tech / PhD students from other institutions can also participate in the program and the fee is Rs 300/- per participant (non-refundable). Registration fee includes course kit, tea, snacks, and lunch. PAYMENT The course fee will be deposited at the time of registration in the form of cash/dd in favour of Director NIT Kurukshetra payable at Kurukshetra.
