Computer Networks Lab 4 Objectives: 1) Manage user accounts in windows 2) Familiarise yourself with FTP, Network Drive, Network Printer and Terminal Services 3) Configure IP filtering Note: Unless specified, the exercises for lab 4 can be performed on a client or a server machine. KEY: Do this Information A) Manage User Accounts in Windows On the server enable the Guest account: 1. Click Start and select Settings Control Panel Adminstrative Tools Computer Management Right-clicking My Computer and clicking Manage is an alternative way to open computer management. 2. Expand Local Users and Groups by clicking the + next to it, and select Users. 3. Right-click on Guest and click Properties 4. Uncheck the box Account is disabled and click OK Enabling the guest account means that you share files for Everyone or Guest, anyone can get to the files without having to supply a password. How many user acocunts are there on your computer? Having the guest account enabled is useful for sharing files but by default it allows anyone to log onto your computer. This is troublesome because even with only guest access a malicious user could still wreak all sorts of havoc on your computer. Prevent Guest from logging on locally: 1. Click Start and select Settings Control Panel Administrative Tools 2. Open Local Security Policy 3. Expand Local Policies and click User Right Assignment 4. Right-click on Deny logon locally and click Properties. 5. Under Local Security Setting tab, click Add User or Group Computer Networks 1
2 6. Type guest in the textbox and click Check Name 7. Choose Guest. Go back to Computer Management window. Create new users: 1. Right-click in the right hand pane and select New User 2. Enter all the required details to make a new user account for you to use: 3. e.g. User name = jdoe, Full name = John Doe, Description = Account Payable Manager User name must be unique as it is part of what the system uses to authenticate you. Full name is sometimes used by programs to auto customise themselves. 4. Enter a password and REMEMBER IT! 5. Uncheck User must change password.. and click Create. 6. Create 3 additional users and call them staff1, staff2 and staff3. 7. Click Close on the New User interface. Q1. Why might you want to prevent a user from being able to change their password? Manage User Rights: 1. Right-click on your newly created user(jdoe) and click properties. 2. In the textbox enter administrator and click check names. Choose administrator 3. Back in the Member of tab, select Users and click remove jdoe now has the same rights and restrictions as Administrator You can edit the rights of an individual user manually, but windows provides a number of groups with reasonably sensible permission by default (called Guests, Users, Power Users, Administrator..). instead of setting the many permissions for each user, you make the user a member of the appropriate group and they inherit the group s permissions. Log off and log on as the new user you created to test your setting Computer Networks 2
3 Manage Groups: 1. Select Groups in the left hand pane. 2. In the right-hand pane, right click and select New Group, call the group Staff and give the description All permanent staff members of WidgetCorp 3. Find the user you want to add in the textbox and add them. Close Computer Management. User groups in windows are useful for minimising administration effort (particularly in the large domains). Users can be made members of zero or more groups. Changing the rights of the group changes right for all members of the group. 4. Create a folder on C:\ called Staff_share, add a txt file in that directory and write something in it. Right-click on Staff_share and click Sharing 5. Select the radio button Share this folder and click the permission button. 6. Select everyone and click remove, 7. Click Add then find and add staff group. 8. Click OK, OK. You have now created a share which only Staff member can access from the networks. You can also do more advanced sharing which all everyone read access but only Staff full access. In windows, denying write access is different to not allowing write access. If you want a group (e.g. everyone) to read a directory but not write to it, uncheck the box indicating allow change. Checking the box indicating deny change has an entirely different effect. Encrypt data files: Normally, files in My Documents are only available for the owner (and administrator) to view and use, but if the raw data becomes available to another operating system, such privacy is not respected. Windows can encrypt your files and after they are encrypted, the files are only readable using the private key (managed & maintained by Windows). If a malicious party gains access to the raw data on your hard drive, your files will not be so readily accessible (have to break the cipher to gain access). Similar features are available in other operating systems. 1. Right-click on the folder you created (staff_share) and click properties. 2. Click the advanced button on the general tab and check the box Encrypt contents to secure data then click OK. 3. Click OK on the folder properties window and when or if prompted, choose to apply changes to folder, subfolder and files Computer Networks 3
4 Q2. After the computer has encrypted the files, you can still open the folder easily and the network share still works. Why? Q3. What is disadvantage of encrypting files on your hard drive? Change Passwords: Users normally change their own passwords by pressing Ctrl-Alt-Del (in Virtual Environment, use Ctrl-Alt-Insert combination), then clicking Change Password and filling in the prompt. 1. Open Computer Management, click Users 2. Right-click on the staff1 and click Set Password. 3. Set staff1 s password. You ll notice that you don t have to enter their old password. This is for resetting users password when they forget. Obviously, this function is only accessible to privileged users. B) FTP FTP stands for File Transfer Protocol. Use Command Line FTP Client. 1. Open a command prompt. Type ftp to connect to the ftp server on the IBM server. 2. Use anonymous when prompted for a username, and press enter when prompted for a password Computer Networks 4
5 Some ftp sites allow anonymous users to use a blank password, while other require an address as a password from anonymous users. 3. Type help to get a list of available commands. 4. Type ls or dir to get a listing of files on the server. You ll notice a single file serverftp.txt listed. Type get serverftp.txt to get this file. Type quit to quit the ftp client. Q4. What is the first word in serverftp.txt? Use Internet Explorer as an FTP Client: Open Internet Explorer. In the Address bar type ftp:// you will see the single serverftp.txt file again. By default, Internet Explorer logs into ftp servers anonynously. Start IIS FTP Server: 1. Click Start and select Settings Control Panel Administrative Tools Internet Services Manager. 2. Right-click Default FTP Site and click Start. Check that the ftp server is running by navigating to ftp://localhost (You should see a blank folder, no error messages should come up). Configure FTP Server: 1. Right-click on Default FTP Site and click Properties. 2. On the Messages tab set a Welcome message and an Exit message. Browse through the other tabs to view other configuration options (however, leave them set to defaults) Computer Networks 5
6 3. Place (or make) some files in C:\Inetpub\ftproot 4. Use your client xomputer to connect to your FTP server. Download the files you placed there. Investigate Internet Explorer FTP Client with Wireshark. Q5. What does Internet Explorer use as an anonymous password when connecting to your FTP server? You might want to use filter port 21 C) Network Drive Map a network drive: 1. Right-click My Computer on the desktop and click Map Network Drive. 2. In the drop-down list Drive, select s: 3. In Folder drop-list type \\ \drive 4. Click different user name and enter Guest, (no password) in the window that pops up and click OK If you now open My Computer, you ll see that there is a new drive letter which represents the network share. If the network share you map is writable, you ( and all programs) can read and write to the drive as if it were an ordinary local hard disk. Q6. What is the advantages of using a network drive over network shares? Q7. What is the advantage of storing data on network drives (on a server) compared with local drives? Computer Networks 6
7 D) Network Printer Map a Network Printer: The HP4200tn is capable of accepting printing jobs directly from the LAN but many printers can accept jobs from only 1 computer (over USB/parallel etc). when using a computer to serve a printer to the network, the computer can buffer and queue print jobs for the clients. 1. Click Start Settings Printers click Add Printer. 2. Click Next, select Network Printer, click Next. Type \\ \laser as the name of the printer. If prompted for a driver, select the driver from \\ \installs\drivers\HP4200tn. You can try to print a simple text file to test this setup. Q8. What is the advantage of using a PC as a print server (compared with using printer directly connected to the LAN): a) For a client? b) For the systems administrator? E) Terminal Services Terminal Services can remote control of any computer running windows and a terminal services server. This can be very useful for configuring servers that are in a remote physical location or don t have keyboards/monitors attached. Start terminal services client: 1. On the client machine in you group only: 2. Click Start Programs Accessories Communications Remote Desktop Connection. Terminal Services can also be started by clicking Start Run and typing mstsc Connect to server: 1. In the Computer textbox type your server s IP address and click Connect. 2. At the login prompt, enter the administrator username and password for the server Computer Networks 7
8 Q9. How secure is this service? Find information about this services such as protocol and port number used, encryption information (if any). F) IP Filtering Configure your server machine to accept www and ftp connections but deny all other TCP connections: 1. Right-click My Network Places and select Properties. 2. Right-click on Local Area Network and select Properties. 3. Select Internet Protocol (TCP/IP) then click Properties. 4. Click the Advanced button near the bottom of the dialogue, and go to the Options tab, 5. Select TCP/IP Filtering and click properties. 6. In the TCP/IP Filtering dialogue check the Enable TCP/IP Filtering (All adapters) box. 7. Select the Permit Only radio button for TCP Ports. 8. Add ports 80 (www) and 21 (ftp). Click OK s. 9. Windows will now want to restart, click yes. Use your client machine to test IP filtering: a) Load your server s webpage. (Use Internet Explorer) b) Connect to your server s ftp. (Use command prompt and use administrator account) c) Use Terminal Services to connect to your server. d) Connect to file sharing on your server. (Type \\<Server s IP Address>\Staff_Share in Start Run) e) Ping your server. Q10. Do packets for the selected services (www and ftp) get through the filtering? Q11. What other functions (above) work? Why? THE END Computer Networks 8
