1 Mobile Film in Schools Proposal Kids Teach Kids Tech 2014 S. BOTELLO PRODUCTIONS, LLC.

2 Kids Teach Kids Tech Kids Teach Kids with Video Innovative Education with Mobile Technology We shall state the obvious: Kids may actually like school for giving them an opportunity to use their favored devices as tools to educate themselves and each other. Parents may actually see their children working with a mobile phone and not react negatively but positively instead. As a member of the Media Communications Department here at Grossmont College, we have always been happy to follow, encourage and support the projects of current and former students. Although the focus of our classroom experience is on teaching students to use professional equipment we have certainly been aware of the financial challenges facing students and emerging filmmakers today. The rapid changes in technology and the escalating costs of equipment is difficult for us to keep up with as well. The development of phone technology which takes both still and video images in very high quality has inspired many to consider using phones to acquire video footage to tell stories. Applications for editing, special effects, and post-production are now available, which makes story telling with phone images possible for competition and festivals. The results have been anything but amateurish. We support Susan s forward thinking vision of a global cell-phone video festival and would encourage others to grab their phone and make a movie. I believe there is a place other than YouTube for films made with cell-phone technology to be shown and recognized for their inspiration and quality. William Snead, Media Communications Department, Grossmont College. ( Mobile Film Inspires Learning Students who participate in the program will appreciate the focused subject each district, school or program instructor chooses to set as the topic and format for each school year or semester, as it applies. As a student is motivated by the privilege of using a mobile phone to create a project for school, the challenge the process creates naturally requires creativity and persistence. The challenges are in details that come up during the production process such as rain during a sunny scene or rain during an interview, which also has audio challenges. Perhaps someone cancels an interview. Whatever the challenges, they have to be dealt with at the time they come up and that is what adult life is about everyday, as we are faced with challenges and have to decide on how to best proceed with consequences in mind. As we live in a world fast evolving due to technological advances that have changed the pace of all natural processes around us, education is now based more on the future than the past for learning. So much so that many employers sometimes prefer to hire someone who can creatively think on their feet during a challenge over someone with a degree. We hope to morph the two in the future by providing both a degree & creativity to future employers. About SBP & Mobile Film International Mobil Film Festival in San Diego was created by S. Botello Productions, LLC. to provide a place where all filmmakers could compete in an equal arena by being limited to using only mobile phones as film/video cameras. While one is limited to using the phone for recording video footage the limit stops there. The purpose of the film festival was to allow anyone with a dream to use what we all have available, mobile phones, to showcase their talents and skills regardless of income, experience, education, age or anything. Basically, we encourage all humans to try this. Our proposal is for us to work together collaborating to give students the choice to create documentaries or videos based on your criteria using mobile phones only as their camera. We will provide assistance. At completion of their films, students will attend and present their projects during a district wide contest where winners will attend the International Mobil Film Festival in San Diego, network among filmmakers and walk the red carpet as competitors in an international event in San Diego by SBP. 3 2013 & 2014 Mobile Film School San Diego Mobile Film School Launches When we announced the Mobile Film School in San Diego back in September 2012, we announced that we planned to accredit the school. That is still our goal. The San Diego Mobile Film School was created by SBP as a bridge to connect an artist's dream with the tools he or she needs to realize their dream. Mobile Film Resource Center Promoting Art, Technology & Education, S. Botello Productions, LLC is forming a mobile film resource center for the world to access and collaborate with. A strong emphasis is on connecting the world of filmmaking to mobile filmmakers around the globe via new technological advances with mobile phone cameras. We already have a group of global innovators collaborating on mobile film by SBP. Student Testimonial "I learned so much in this class it felt like an on the job training with a production company. I learned how to use my phone as an audio recorder separate from just visual recording, how to edit with multiple apps, lighting, adding music and so much more. I couldn't get this on my own without MFS." Perry Dixon from Pasadena: about the Mobile Film School in San Diego.

4 Kids Teach Kids Tech Creativity & Critical Thinking In order to get the shots, or video footage they would like to get, students need to be creative on how to make them a reality from a script or storyboard. If they are recreating Lincoln s last moments alive at the theater, they will need to plan where to get a location, how to record it or shoot it as well as design the scene and a lot more. They also will need to be accurate. The details involved in video and filmmaking are things that cannot be faked. While watching a video, it will jump at you when something is wrong or missing. The presentation of the final project is to be presented among their peers and could win them an entry to a real film festival and walk the red carpet with real filmmakers from around the world. That s nothing to shun at. It is possible to create professional films with a mobile phone with HD that are able to play on big screens for presentations. We can train you to train students or we can do it hands-on. We will provide each school or school district with a web page for students and instructors and provide assistance. Kids Teach Kids Tech Teaching Collaboration & Team Work Filmmaking is a collaborative process that depends on teamwork for success. Production days in the real world of filmmaking are 12 hours long and at odd hours of the day and night, sometimes under adverse conditions. While students will only be expected to spend an allotted time producing their projects, their passion and devotion as a team will tell how much time they may end up spending on their projects. Some students will be really curious about the outcome of the opportunity given and may even put in their all to complete it and make a great project. Loyalty, devotion, collaboration, passion and inspiration--all of these are contagious outcomes as a result of creating a film together as a team. Students learn camaraderie, creative thinking and problem solving in order to make their script and/or vision into a film that tells their story. The research involved in creating a documentary can be too much for one lone student and a team is best for dividing the research in order to tell a story with genuine resources. Patience and persistence are qualities essential to both filmmakers and students. The same virtues are also natural in art, passionate work and learning technology. Asking and Coaching Simultaneously In a production for a documentary, a team is working together on creating a story much in the same manner as organizing an essay; collecting facts. They are creating it as they research it, during production of a documentary, and as video creates limitations, it opens doors to creativity at the same time. For example: Locations and their availability can limit a filmmaker s plans unlike a written essay where the writer can simply find another source to quote, online. With video, the source is to be interviewed in front of the camera. The mobile phone camera in this case. Setting up an interview takes time & planning. Children are very resourceful. They teach each other how to do a lot of things that we refuse to, choose not to or cannot teach them. When we are not around, since toddlerhood, we know they teach their younger siblings. Although some supervision is preferred and we are to be there for them when they get stuck or need assistance online, they will instantly ask questions out-loud as they work together and some in the group will answer and even coach their peers. Naturally. Some time and research will prove this to be very effective for teaching and your school stands to be an innovator for aiming high and providing this innovative choice for all students so that they may all learn from each other for their future. You will stand as a pioneer in providing students the latest in technology for the future of our success in a growing technological world.
