Pierfrancesco Bellini 13 November 2012, Ljubljana, Slovenia 1
Who: Jana, Irene and Piero We revised principal standardization bodies to see if there is something related to performing arts metadata and if there is space to improve current standards We considered also the standardization processes and the time needed for standards development (where possible)
MPEG MPEG-7 Dublin Core DCTerms Europeana EDM IEEE nothing found IMS Global nothing found Projects (not standards) PACore, EUScreen European Standard EN 15744:2009 (film identif.) EN 15907:2010 (film identif.) ISO (ICOM) 21127:2006 (CIDOC-CRM) IFLA FRBRer IFLA & ICOM FRBRoo W3C nothing found OASIS nothing found
Allows to represent information about People involved in the creation process [Performance] location and date Scene description Standardization process can be quite long and difficult
No specific terms related with performing arts Difficult to encode the roles of people involved in the creation process DCMI allows to standardize Application Profiles for a specific application An AP can include DC terms but also new terms The standardization process is quite simple, max 6 months (
No specific information for performing arts EDM is based on RDF, it can be extended (e.g. defining subproperties/subclasses) We can propose a taskforce in Europeana 2.0 for the representation of performing arts in EDM but we need to attract other projects with similar needs (is this a standardization activity?) We can also propose other TF on more general aspects (e.g. annotations) that may attract other projects.
European Standard on Film identification - Minimum set of metadata for cinematographic works defines a set of 15 data elements fundamental in the identification of cinematographic works. It is the minimum set of data elements necessary for identifying cinematographic works when exchanging information on such works e.g. among national film archives. Since one of the objectives of this European Standard is the improvement of interoperability between different databases, the minimum set of data elements shall be supplied by all organizations participating in an exchange of information on cinematographic works held by them. Data elements: Title, Series/serial, Cast, Credits, Production company, Country of reference, Original format, Original length, Original duration, Original language, Year of reference, Identifier, Genre, Relationship, Source It is defined how to map them to Dublin Core Provides a subset of what defined in EN 15907:2010
European Standard on Film identification - Enhancing interoperability of metadata - Element sets and structures Primary Entities: Cinematographic Work, Variant, Manifestation, Item, Content Contextual Entities: Agent, Event Elements: Identifier, Record source, Title, Identifying Title, Country of Reference, Year of reference, Format, Extent, Language, Production event, Publication Event, Award, Decision event, IPR registration, Preservation event, Subject terms, Content description Common Element types: Region, Timespan, Language tag Relationships: HasAgent, HasEvent, HasContent, HasAsSubject, HasOtherRelation, HasVariant, HasManifestation, HasItem
13 November 2012, Ljubljana, Slovenia 9
Information and documentation -- A reference ontology for the interchange of cultural heritage information Born in the museum world The old version (before standardization) does not have performing arts related information 13 November 2012, Ljubljana, Slovenia 10
Specification provided by IFLA Does not have specific classes for performing arts 13 November 2012, Ljubljana, Slovenia 11
Harmonization of FRBRer and CIDOC-CRM performed by IFLA and ICOM (maybe it will be integrated in ISO 21127?) Provides classes and properties related with perf. arts: F20 Performance Work F21 Recording Work F25 Performance plan F26 Recording F27 Work conception F28 Expression creation F29 Recording event F30 Publication event F31 Performance R25 performed (was performed in)

Describe what we have in our metadata model that is not supported by current standards (e.g. roles) Propose a Dublin Core Application Profile Propose a task force on Europeana on Perf. Arts but also on other more general aspects (e.g. annotations) Improve current standards with amendments to support our metadata model, we need to convince them that it is absolutely needed. Propose a new work item to OASIS, W3C, IEEE, IMS Global (We can apply for more than one option)
