1 BEng/MEng (Hons) ineering Programme Specification Introduction This Programme Specification is a concise summary of the main features of the BEng/MEng (Honours) ineering degree programme at Cardiff University, and of the learning outcomes that a typical student might reasonably be expected to achieve if she/he takes full advantage of the learning opportunities that are provided. More detailed information on the content and learning outcomes, and on the teaching, learning and assessment methods for each module, can be found in the Student Handbook and on the Cardiff School of Engineering web pages. Admissions Programme Aims The Programme of Study aims to: produce engineering graduates, educated in the application of a broad spectrum of fundamental science and engineering principles to real-life technological, financial, regulatory, managerial and ethical problems encountered in the mechanical engineering profession, and to produce graduates who are equipped to be key professional players in the wider industry, the professions, and public service; produce graduates who are numerate, literate, analytical, articulate, practical, adaptive, creative, confident and inquisitive; continue to attract motivated and highly qualified students, irrespective of background; and promote the advancement of scholarship to meet the strategic needs of the local region and the wider nation. More specifically, the Programme of Study aims to: provide students with sound knowledge and skills, confidence to solve multidisciplinary problems in the mechanical engineering context, ability to exercise 1

2 original thought, have good professional judgment and take responsibility for the direction of important tasks ; provide opportunities for students to be creative and innovative in problem solving while maintaining a proper balance of risk management ; produce graduates that are proficient in oral and visual communication with other professionals and lay people ; produce graduates adept at working in, and leading, teams of inter-disciplinary professionals ; produce graduates with sound understanding of problem solving in a business context to achieve an economic solution ; encourage students to progressively take ownership and direction of their learning so that they may develop as independent life-long learners; and form a prevailing ethos of professional, social and ethical responsibility within the learning environment and in the students; widen regional participation in Higher Education. 12. Programme Outcomes The Programme Outcomes have been informed by the Engineering Benchmark Statement and also by the requirements of the Institution of ineers through the Joint Board of Moderators. Students who gain the award will have demonstrated achievement of the Intended Learning Outcomes, as set out under the sections of the mapping table in Appendix A. 13. Programme structure and requirements, courses and awards Details of the programme structures and requirements, courses and awards are available in the Student Handbook and on the School of Engineering web pages. A module represents 100 hours of programmed study, and typically involves 36 hours of contact time with teaching staff. In summary, the MEng Scheme is offered in full-time (4 year,h302) mode, with sandwich industrial training (5 year, H307), and year in Europe (in France, Spain or Germany, 5 year, H308) extensions. The BEng schemes are obviously similar but of one year less duration. The year out alternatives involve a one year placement away from the School between the second and third years of academic study at Cardiff. In each year of the scheme students take modules up to the value of 120 credits (130 credits for Year in Europe). A choice of modules is available during Years 3 and 4. The award of an MEng degree is conditional on successful progression in all years, and the level of award is based equally on results from both Years 3 and Other Features The distinctive features of the programme include: the opportunity for students to learn in a research-led teaching institution serviced by staff rated highly by independent Government assessment (Cardiff Mechanical Engineering had 95% of its research in the higher International standard categories in the 2008 RAE, equal 8 th in the UK on the Grade Point Average, and all staff are involved in teaching); the opportunity to work in facilities commensurate with such a successful research unit; academic staff who are Chartered Engineers; a variety of advanced level modules on offer; 2

3 the opportunity to study a language, and to study abroad; the opportunity to follow a sandwich year in industry and through this gain a City and Guilds Licenciateship; emphasis on progression towards independent learning in preparation for life-long learning; the opportunity to participate in the design, development, construction, testing and competing of a proven Formula Student Racing car; full accreditation for Membership of the Institution of Mechanicall Engineers, the Institute of Energy and registration as a Chartered Engineer. Student/staff panels Module evaluation Methods for evaluating and improving the quality and standards of learning include: Annual Programme Review and Evaluation (report made public in the School); Periodic Review; Academic Validation of Programmes of Study; External Examiners Reports (made annually); Accreditation Reports; Student Module Evaluations (each student makes an anonymous evaluation on each of his/her modules, and results are made public in the School); Student/Staff Sub-groups (with minutes made public in the School); Student Representatives on Boards of Studies; Staff Appraisal; Staff Peer Review of Teaching. 3

General and Specific Learning Outcomes for BEng and MEng degrees General Learning Outcomes for BEng and MEng Degrees KU1 Knowledge and Understanding Demonstrate knowledge and understanding of essential facts, concepts, theories and principles of their engineering discipline, and its underpinning science and mathematics. KU2 Have an appreciation of the wider multidisciplinary engineering context and its underlying principles. KU3 Appreciate the social, environmental, ethical, economic and commercial considerations affecting the exercise of their engineering judgement. IA1 Intellectual Abilities Apply appropriate quantitative science and engineering tools to the analysis of problems. IA2 Demonstrate creative and innovative ability in the synthesis of solutions and in formulating designs. IA3 Comprehend the broad picture and thus work with an appropriate level of detail. PS1 Practical skills: Possess practical engineering skills acquired through, for example, work carried out in laboratories and workshops; in industry through supervised work experience; in individual and group project work; in design work; and in the development and use of computer software in design, analysis and control. Evidence of group working and of participation in a major project is expected. However, individual professional bodies may require particular approaches to this requirement. GT1 General transferable skills: Develop transferable skills that will be of value in a wide range of situations. These are exemplified by the Qualifications and Curriculum Authority Higher Level Key Skills and include problem solving, communication, and working with others, as well as the effective use of general IT facilities and information retrieval skills. They also include planning self-learning and improving performance, as the foundation for lifelong learning/cpd. Specific Learning Outcomes Underpinning science, mathematics and engineering, BEng and MEng Underpinning Science and Mathematics and associated engineering disciplines (US) Knowledge and understanding of scientific principles and methodology necessary to underpin their education in their engineering discipline, to enable appreciation of its scientific and engineering context and to support their understanding of future developments and technologies. Knowledge and understanding of mathematical principles necessary to underpin their education in their engineering discipline and to enable them to apply mathematical methods, tools and notations proficiently in the analysis and solution of engineering problems. Ability to apply and integrate knowledge and understanding of other engineering disciplines to support the study of their own engineering discipline. A comprehensive understanding of the scientific principles of own specialisation and related disciplines. A comprehensive knowledge and understanding of mathematical and computer models relevant to the engineering discipline, and an appreciation of their limitations. An understanding of concepts from a range of areas including some outside engineering, and the ability to apply them effectively in engineering projects. An awareness of developing technologies related to own specialisation. Engineering Analysis, BEng and MEng Engineering Analysis (E) Understanding of engineering principles and the ability to apply them to analyse key engineering processes. Ability to identify, classify and describe the performance of systems and components through the use of analytical methods and modelling techniques. Ability to apply quantitative methods and/or computer software relevant to their engineering discipline, to solve engineering problems. Understanding of and ability to apply a systems approach to engineering problems Working from the whole to the part. Ability to use fundamental knowledge to investigate new and emerging technologies. 4

Ability to apply mathematical and computer based models for solving problems in engineering, and the ability to assess the limitations of particular cases. Design Design is the creation and development of an economically viable product, process or system to meet a defined need. It involves significant technical and intellectual challenges and can be used to integrate all engineering understanding, knowledge and skills to the solution of real problems. Graduates need the knowledge understanding and skills to: Investigate and define a problem and identify constraints including environmental and sustainability limitations, health and safety and risk assessment issues. Understand customer and user needs and the importance of considerations such as aesthetics. Identify and manage cost drivers. Use creativity to establish innovative solutions. Ensure fitness for purpose for all aspects of the problem including production, operation, maintenance and disposal. Manage the design process and evaluate outcomes. Wide knowledge and comprehensive understanding of design processes and methodologies and the ability to apply and adapt them in unfamiliar situations. Ability to generate an innovative design for products, systems, components or processes to fulfil new needs. Economic, social, and environmental context Economic, social and environmental context (S ) Knowledge and understanding of commercial and economic context of engineering processes. Knowledge of management techniques which may be used to achieve engineering objectives within that context. Understanding of the requirement for engineering activities to promote sustainable development. Awareness of the framework of relevant legal requirements governing engineering activities, including personnel, health, safety, and risk (including environmental risk) issues. Understanding of the need for a high level of professional and ethical conduct in engineering. The ability to make general evaluations of commercial risks through some understanding of the basis of such risks. Extensive knowledge and understanding of management and business practices, their limitations, and how these may be applied appropriately to strategic and tactical issues. Engineering Practice Practical application of engineering skills, combining theory and experience, and use of other relevant knowledge and skills. This must include an appropriate combination of the majority of these outcomes Knowledge of characteristics of particular equipment, processes or products. Workshop and laboratory skills. Understanding of contexts in which engineering knowledge can be applied (e.g. operations and management, technology, development, etc). Understanding use of technical literature and other information sources. Awareness of nature of intellectual property and contractual issues. Understanding of appropriate codes of practice and industry standards. Awareness of quality issues. Ability to work with technical uncertainty. A thorough understanding of current practice and its limitations and some appreciation of likely new developments. Extensive knowledge and understanding of a wide range of engineering materials and components. Ability to apply engineering techniques taking account of a range of commercial and industrial constraints. 5
