6 The Eurozone Existential Questions What is happening? States in the Eurozone continue to push through austerity measures with the aim of reducing sovereign debt Economic growth is limited, (youth) unemployment high, polarisation growing, along with social tensions around immigration & diversity Greek election has potential to fundamentally change the terms of reference Prospects for 2015? ECB has now launched QE Scepticism & hope surrounding TTIP Deflation a serious threat No return to real growth in 2015 Further populist political progress Keep an eye on France. Syriza are presented as far left, while those they replace are presumably moderates. It is a fascinating insight into what the western media regard as moderation: plunging over half of young people into unemployment, almost doubling child poverty, stripping away basic social protections. The politics of despair peddled by elites mean you are supposed to regard such injustices as inevitable, irresistible, impossible to overcome. Owen Jones, The Guardian, 26 th Jan 2015
7 IMF Austerity A Global Tragedy IMF advocacy of fiscal consolidation proved to be premature for major advanced economies, as growth projections turned out to be optimistic. Moreover, the policy mix of fiscal consolidation coupled with monetary expansion that the IMF advocated for advanced economies since 2010 appears to be at odds with longstanding assessments of the relative effectiveness of these policies in the conditions prevailing after a financial crisis characterized by private debt overhang.

12 Global Banking Reform 200bn "Bank employees are not more dishonest than others," said Ernst Fehr of the University of Zurich, author of the study published Wednesday by the journal Nature. But he said when reminded of their job they become more dishonest, so something about the culture of banking "seems to make them more dishonest."

Add people and information into the mix and you get a network of networks where billions or even trillions of connections create unprecedented opportunities and give things that were silent a voice. Cisco defines IoE as bringing together people, process, data, and things to make networked connections more relevant and valuable than ever before turning information into actions that create new capabilities, richer experiences, and unprecedented economic opportunity for businesses, individuals, and countries.
