Experience a different education system: gain (academic) knowledge and new perspectives Immerse yourself in a totally different culture: meet new friends from around the world and improve your language skills or learn a new language It looks great on your C.V.: gain skills that are highly valued by employers worldwide Personal development: learn to be fully independent and see what you can do on your own

4 When is the best time? Most students: Bachelor, one semester during 3rd year During the Free Module ( vrije keuzeruimte ) Writing BA thesis? Replacing BA major courses?... - Talk to study advisor! Exchange during Master, difficulties: No Free Module in MA, exc. ReMA Replacing MA courses: limited entrance to MA courses at partner universities, approval exam committee - Talk to study advisor MA!

6 Where do I want to go? Which country/city appeals to you? Are there courses offered in your field of study? Does it fit your study programme? (ALWAYS talk to your study advisor!) Think about your destination and motivation. Language: in which language are courses offered? Not all courses are offered in English. Browse the websites for different universities to get an impression. Read personal reports from other students at the IO desk (Monday-Thursday 13:00-16:00) Students at the fair in the Weberfoyer

12 Erasmus+, conditions You must be registered as a full-time student of the Faculty of Art you need to have passed your PROPAEDEUTIC EXAM before departure! Your level of proficiency of the language of instruction at the partner university should be at least B2 in terms of the Common European Framework of Reference You may go on Erasmus+ study exchange between 3 to max. 12 months per each cycle of study (BA, MA and PhD) However: you are only guaranteed to receive the grant for study exchange once! Prolonging your stay or doing a 2 nd study period abroad? funding depends on budget availability

13 Erasmus+, conditions (2) So, you can have an Erasmus+ grant: once for study (possible during BA/MA/PhD) once for internship (only possible during MA) A study period during the Master may also include a traineeship period: Placement Office Note: applying for an university from other programmes: own students go first in selection courses in your field of study never guaranteed! Discuss courses with your study advisor (approval registered before departure in Erasmus+ Learning Agreement)

14 Erasmus+, conditions (3) Erasmus+ grant: Fixed amount per month, depending on destination and number of months. See overview on our website Grant total is paid in two parts, 70 % before departure and 30 % after return Student is responsible to take care of all paperwork and to keep to given deadlines! When deadlines aren t met you have to pay back the entire grant sum

15 Marco Polo, conditions Destinations outside Europe (programme financed by RUG) You must be registered as a full-time student of the Faculty of Art and passed PROPAEDEUTIC EXAM before departure! Your level of proficiency of the language of instruction at the partner university should be at least B2 in CEFR terms Fixed amount per month, depending on destination and number of months. 16 Marco Polo, conditions (2) Grant is paid out in two parts: % Discuss courses with your study adviser before you apply! Student is responsible to take care of all paperwork and to keep to given deadlines in order to receive grant!

17 Language Your level of proficiency of the language of instruction at the partner university should be at least B2 in CEFR terms! When applying: you can proof your level of proficiency by submitting a: finished language minor at the RUG (certified list of marks), or language certificate, or letter from your study advisor where he/she states that your level of proficiency is at least B2 or that you will be finishing a language minor at the RUG at least on departure Note: there is no need to submit proof when the language of instruction is English Make sure to also carefully check the language requirements from the partner university before applying!

18 18 Language (2) Erasmus+: it is possible to take a language course organised by the host institution and receive grant days for it (prior the study period abroad) Erasmus+: if the language of instruction at the partner university is EN, ES, FR, DE or IT: the student has to undertake an online language assessment before and at the end of the study period abroad no assessments means no grant! More information on this will follow as soon as the Erasmus+ selections have been made

19 Application procedure 1 December: Online Application opens and can be found on IO website: rug.nl/mu/internationaloffice Study abroad > Forms You can apply for: max. 3 European Universities (Erasmus+) + 2 Universities Outside the EU (Marco Polo), so 5 choices in Total! Please note: there are different application forms for Canadian Studies and Multi Faculty Exchanges, but you need to mention all your exchange applications on the online webform from the IO! Also your Erasmus Mundus Action II choice!! Deadline IO application: 2 February 2015, before 9:00 am!

22 So I applied, what happens next? February: application forms are sent to departmental exchange coordinators March/April: IO informs students about the selections ( ) Note: selection= not yet a guarantee that you can actually go! We will still have to nominate you and you still have to officially apply at the host university! April/May: IO nominates selected students at Host universities. May/June: - Host University contacts student (sometimes through the IO) - Student receives information on application, courses, housing - Student applies as an exchange student at Host university - IO informs selected students about Erasmus and Marco Polo procedures

24 Finances Besides Erasmus or Marco Polo: Scholarshipportal.eu GUF (Groningen University Fund) Beursopener.nl You ll still receive study support from DUO ( uitwonend ) Own savings And don t forget: Notify governmental institution for study support (Dutch students: DUO) Re-imbursement for your travel card from DUO!

Insurance (health, liability, travel insurance) Check your own insurance or consider AON: Free travel insurance through University of Groningen, see website IO Housing (mostly arranged by Host, the RUG does not arrange this for you) Housing Office (sublet your room in Groningen) Visa (mostly for destinations outside Europe, check this thoroughly!)

26 Remember (2) You don t have to pay tuition fees at your host university, but need to stay registered at RUG You need approval for courses from your study advisor/ exam committee. Also check if semester RUG clashes with semester dates abroad. If so: talk to your study advisor asap. Keep to paperwork deadlines provided by IO Make it your responsibility to check if your application is going smoothly, don t wait! Contact the IO in Groningen or the Host s IO when in doubt HAVE FUN and send us a postcard!
