Agenda o Motivation o Testing the Network o Testing the Compute Notes o Testing the Software Environment 2
Disclaimer o This material is constantly under development and being adapted to new hardware and issues we stumbled upon. o Most of our tests are targeted towards performance use Diagnostics provided by Windows HPC Server 2008 for first checks! 3
You got new hardware what migth be wrong? o Recently installed Cluster: Fujitsu Siemens Primergy RS 200 S4 servers 2x Intel Xeon 5450 (quad core, 3.0 GHz) 16 / 32 GB memory per node 4x DDR InfiniBand: MPI latency: 4.5 us MPI bandwidth: 1250 MB/s 4 o InfiniBand network isvery sensitive to bad connectors! o Nodes mayshow performance variations!
Possible metrics to detect issues o Network Latency: Time to setup network communication = Time to send a message of size 0 Bandwidth: Rate of data transfer o Compute nodes Performance of CPU and memory subsystem Power consumption inside expected limits? 5 o Very hard to detect once the cluster is in production, as e.g. slight variations in applicationperformance are normal!
Agenda o Motivation o Testing the Network o Testing the Compute Notes o Testing the Software Environment 6
Sanity Checks: Network o Tools: latency.exe: Measurepoint to point network latency bandwidth.exe: Measure point to point network bandwidth o Procedure Select (a subset of) compute nodes for examination Run test tool Examine result (e.g. create a pivot table in Excel) 7 o A GUI based approach is currently in testing o An integration into Diagnostics Framework is planned
Sanity Checks: Network o Demo 8
Agenda o Motivation o Testing the Network o Testing the Compute Notes o Testing the Software Environment 9
o Tools: Sanity Checks: Compute Nodes LINPACK: Measure node / cluster performance o Procedure Select (a subset of) compute nodes for examination Compute performance estimation GFLOPS = #Nodes #Cores_per_Node #Results_per_Core Clock_Rate_in_GHz Expected_Network_Efficiency Run LINPACK benchmark Compare your efficiency with similar hardware in Top o A GUI based approach is currently in testing o An integration into Diagnostics Framework is planned
Sanity Checks: Compute Nodes o Demo 11
Agenda o Motivation o Testing the Network o Testing the Compute Notes o Testing the Software Environment 12
Sanity Checks: Software Environment o An excerpt of the issues we encountered: Visual Studio [2005, 2008, 32 bit, 64 bit, SP1] runtime library not installed on compute nodes Job crash! Error message: Side by side configuration Installation of HPC tools, e.g. Intel MPI: Possible conflicts with %PATH% environment variable. Each software update may break your configuration Error message: Application just hangs Installation of ISV software, e.g. MATLAB: Possible conflicts with mpiexec command and scheduler scripts Error message: Application just hangs 13 o An integration into Diagnostics Framework is planned
Sanity Checks: ISV Software o We have had our fights with several ISV software packages if you like, we can now discuss our approaches of Cluster installation and Job management. 14
Community Resources o Windows HPC Community: o Using the Windows Cluster at RWTH Aachen University aachen.de/win/hpc 15 o German Windows HPC User Group aachen.de/winhpcug Mailinglist: aachen.de/mailman/listinfo/winhpcug low volume
