1 Instructions to Authors The Revista Colombiana de Enfermería is devoted to publishing the results of investigations and knowledge from different areas of healthcare and promoting the exchange of opinions that strengthen the nursing discipline and the quality of life of the population. The Universidad El Bosque, Nursing Faculty - in Bogotá, Colombia, publishes the magazine annually in August. These instructions to authors contain the guidelines that must be taken into account for the preparation, elaboration, and submission of articles to the Revista Colombiana de Enfermería, both for the classification and the acceptance of articles. EDITORIAL CONTENT The content of the articles must be within the Mission and Vision objectives of the magazine and adhere to the criteria of originality, novelty, and methodology. The Revista Colombiana de Enfermería is an eminent, scientific and peer-reviewed publication. Articles are published in Spanish and other languages, especially English, and must be related to the health care field, be original, and should not have been published in other journals. MANUSCRIPT CONTENT The manuscript must include the following parts: Titles in Spanish, English and Portuguese; Name(s) of the author(s); information about the author; Abstract and Key words in Spanish English and Portuguese; Manuscript content; Acknowledgements (optional), Conflict of interest, References; attachments. The manuscripts must follow the order as indicated. In general the research manuscript content include the following sections: Introduction, Method, Results, Discussion and Acknowledgments. Tables and figures could be preferable as part of the text or at the end after the references. TYPES OF MANUSCRIPTS The Revista Colombiana de Enfermería follows the Publindex style: 1. Scientific and technological research manuscript: a document that presents detailed, unpublished results of research projects. They should include four main parts: Introduction, methodology, results and conclusions. 2. Reflection manuscript: a document that presents research results from an analytical, interpretive or critical point of view of the author, on a specific topic, using original sources. 3. Review manuscript: the results of a paper that analyzes, systematizes and integrates research findings, published or unpublished, on a field of science or technology in order to account for progress and development trends. It is characterized by a careful review of at least 50 references. 4. Short article: a brief document showing preliminary or partial results of scientific or technological research that usually requires a quick diffusion. 5. Case report: a document that presents the results of a study on a particular situation in order to present the technical and methodological experiences considered in a specific case. Includes a systematic review of the literature on similar cases.
2 Instructions to Authors 6. Review topic: a document resulting from the critical review of the literature on a particular topic. 7. Letters to the editor: critical, analytical or interpretative points of view about published documents in the journal that according to the Editorial Committee are an important compliment to the topic of discussion for the scientific community involved. 8. Editorial: a document written by the Editor, a member of the Editorial Board or a guest researcher on guidelines in the thematic domain of the Journal. 9. Translation: translation of classic or current texts or transcripts of historical documents or of particular interest in the Journal publishing domain. 10. Reflection document different from a research. 11. References. SUBMITTING ARTICLES General parameters: the manuscript should be typed in letter size paper 8.5x11 inches; double spaced, margins of 1.6 inches on the left and 1.2 inches on all other margins; all pages must be numbered; font Times New Roman size 12. Titles: aligned to the left and in capital letters: Title in Spanish and English, Summary, Keywords, Abstract, Introduction, Methods, Results, Discussion, Acknowledgements, Conflicts of interest, References and additional material; Other titles and subtitles are in lowercase, with the first letter capitalized, and aligned left. Maximum length: 30 pages Title: short and concise. Limit to15 words. Centered in capital letters. Name of the authors: include name, last name and the first letter of the second last name followed by a period. Aligned to the right with the first letter in capital letter and then lowercase. The author s pen name is respected meaning that the usual name separated by a hyphen will stay. The order of the authors will remain as it is submitted in the manuscript, meaning that the first one is the principal author. Information about the authors: in footnote page, with consecutive Arabic numbers the following information for each author should be included: profession, academic degrees, professional affiliation (institutions with which the author is affiliated), current position, city, country and address (the main author or who is responsible for the correspondence). Abstract: not exceed of 150 and 250 words in Spanish, English and Portuguese. Key words: 3 to 7 words that provide the content of the manuscript succinctly. The list of terms from recognized lists as the Science Descriptors Health (DeCS), the Medical Subject Headings (MESH) should be used in order to facilitate the indexation of the database and indicate the source. (Links to consult key words Spanish: and English: Acknowledgements: must include the name, affiliation and type of cooperation provided by collaborators in the realization of the manuscript, but not categorized as authors. The persons named within must have given their consent to be mentioned and the author is responsible for obtaining their written consent. Conflict of interest: notes about personal or institutional affiliations that could affect the progression, results or interpretation of the results. Citation of references: each reference will be cited on the text in parenthesis with Arabic number and should be numbered consecutively in the order they appear in the text. 158
3 Revista Colombiana de Enfermería Volumen 9 Año 9 Págs References: the Revista Colombiana de Enfermeria follows the Vancouver Style that uses the term Reference / Bibliography in relation to works cited within the text, numbered consecutively in the order they appear in the text as opposed to the term Bibliography that refers to a complete list about a topic. As a consequence at the end of the manuscript the title should be References not Bibliography. See the Vancouver Style at: Numbering references: references are listed with Arabic numerals followed by period in a numerical order, as a list as they appeared in the text. Authors in the references: Title case, with Author s surnames followed by Author s name initials without a period; if there is more than one author, a comma separates the names. First 6 authors are listed; thereafter add et al after the sixth author. Here are some Vancouver style guidelines for references: Journal article: Authors. Title of article. International Title of Journal, abbreviated. Year of publication; Volume Number(Issue number -optional-): initial page and final page numbers. Example: Halpern SD, Ubel PA, Caplan AL. Solid-organ transplantation in HIV-infected patients. N Engl J Med Jul 25; 347(4): Books/ Monographs of individual authors: Author(s). Title of the book. Edition. Place of publication: Publisher s name; Year of publication. Note: it is not necessary to enter the first edition. The edition should be written in Arabic numerals and abbreviated: 2ª ed. If there is more than one volume should be cited after the book title: e.g. 3rd ed. Examples: Murray PR, Rosenthal KS, Kobayashi GS, Pfaller MA. Medical microbiology. 4th ed. Abbreviations used needs to be explaining on the endnotes with superscript letters. Only use horizontal lines for the elaboration of the table. References of the tables in the text: tables should be numbered consecutively in the order they appear in the text in parenthesis. Example: (Table 1). Figures: graphs, photographs, maps, drawings, diagrams and similar. Should clarify or add information to the text, not duplicate the content. Each must have a legend as follows: Figure; it should be numbered according to the order of appearance in the text; title, notes (optional), source (original publication or author copyrights). Figures could be in Word as a part of the text or inserted in the document although submitted on separate identifying files complying with the characteristic of high resolution (300 dpi) JPG or similar formats. References of the figures in the text: figures should be mentioned in the order they appear in the text in parenthesis. Example: (Figure 1). Abbreviations: if needed abbreviations are indicated in the text at the time of its first use in parenthesis. Avoid its use on the title and abstract. Measurement units: the measures of weigh, height, length and volume should be presented in metric units (meter, kilogram, liter, etc.) The International System of Units must be used. The abbreviations of the units do not have plurals or punctuation. Decimals: should be within a comma, (comma). Percentage: should be place after the numbers without space. Example: 23,5%. SUBMITTING ARTICLES The manuscript is submitted to the Revista Colombiana de Enfermería in electronic and/or printed version accompanied by a letter from the authors including the following: Name of the manuscript and classification according to Publindex. Indication of the review, approval of the content, organization and publication by all the authors. Specify whether the material is original and was/will not be published on a national or international journal while evaluated for the Editors Review Board. 160

Indicate whether or not there is a conflict of interest; if there is it should be expressed. Authorize the Revista Colombiana de Enfermería to reproduce the text, figures or any other copyright material; make changes in content or style of the manuscript by the editors of translation and style. Corresponding author must be indicated otherwise is imply that the first author will be appointed to complete the above-mentioned functions. Full name (Name, middle name and last name), ID and signature of each author. The printed article must be sent typed on letter size white paper, double size printed. Box Telephones: Direct: (57 1) (57 1) Fax: (57 1) PBX: (57 1) ; Extension: MANUSCRIPT SELECTION The submission of the manuscript to the Revista Colombiana de Enfermería does not imply an obligation for publication or commitment to publish on a certain date. In any case, authors will receive payment for the inclusion of the paper in the journal. The Revista Colombiana de Enfermería reserves all legal rights of reproduction of the published articles. Once the article is submitted to the Revista Colombiana de Enfermería, the Editor will send the author a confirmation receipt via and will request professional information about the authors. All manuscripts are initially reviewed by the Editor, who verifies compliance with the required submission criteria (letter of the presentation article and authors information format) and the format criteria. If there is any change the author will be informed. It is important that the author keeps copies of all the materials submitted. If the author desires to know the status of the manuscript he or she should send the request via to the editor. Once the requirements are fulfilled, the editor will inform the Editorial Committee for general review and assignment of Academic Peers. Academic peers are experts in the subject area of the article and will determine the scientific and academic quality of the material in accordance with a journal guideline. The identities of both authors and peer reviewers will not be disclosed in order to keep the confidentiality of the process. Upon receiving the concepts of academic peers, the Editor of the Journal will notify the author about the review of the academic peers and give a reasonable time for response and implementation of necessary corrections. If the concepts of academic peers were quite dissimilar or if there are special situations that warrant further evaluation, the Editorial Committee shall appoint additional pairs required to continue the process of comprehensive assessment of the article. 161
6 Instructions to Authors The Editorial Committee will decide on the article, after the adjustments made by the author, which can be: Accept, Adjustments needed to accept it or Reject it. The Editor of the Journal will inform the author the final decision of the Editorial Board. Authors of accepted papers must fill out a form about their professional resume before the publication of the document. Accepted article goes on to correction of translation and style. Before publication, the author will receive a copy for review and informed about the final approval of the document that will be included in the volume of the Journal.
