Let s Get Ready Sydney How to prepare for an emergency in the City of Sydney. Essential information for residents, workers and visitors.

1 Develop a personal emergency plan This guide outlines some simple steps you can take to help you prepare for an emergency. Further information can be found at Types of emergencies? An emergency is any incident that causes significant disruption to the community, and which requires a co-ordinated and immediate response Examples include a fire, a hazardous materials incident, a flood, a severe storm, an explosion, an earthquake, an outbreak of contagious disease, transport accidents, civil disturbance, or failure of electricity, water, gas or telecommunications. Develop a personal emergency plan with your family or close friends, so you all know what to do, where to meet, where to go and how to communicate in an emergency. Read, review and rehearse your plan so that everyone is clear about how it works and make sure everyone (even the babysitter) has a copy. In all cases, follow the directions of emergency services, try to remain calm and use common sense. Discuss the kinds of emergencies that could potentially impact on your family, friends or colleagues. Would you need extra assistance in an emergency? Who would help you? Have you discussed this with them? Identify possible exit routes from each room of your home, from where you work and your neighbourhood. Arrange a meeting place. Develop a personal communications plan that includes: Names and addresses of family members and carers. Contact details (home, work, mobile, ) for each person. Children s schools and childcare contact details. Doctor/s contact details. An out of town contact person unlikely to be affected by the same emergency. Up to date medical information e.g. allergies and medications.

2 Put together a Go Bag 3 Know how to respond When you need to move quickly it is important to have all your basic necessities at hand. Prepare a small, easy-to-carry bag with essentials and store it in an accessible place, ready to go at work and at home. Important things to keep in your Go Bag include: Important documents, such as identification, local map, phone numbers of family members and insurance details. AM/FM radio with spare batteries. First aid kit including personal medications. Glasses/contact lenses. Comfortable walking shoes. Spare set of keys (home, car, office). Bottled water, energy bars. Coins and cash (in small denominations). This Pocket Guide. In an emergency, the authorities may ask you to: Stay where you are In some emergencies, you will be asked to stay where you are, or shelter in place. Tune in, switch on or log on and wait for further instructions. Stay-at-Work and Return-to-Work (or Home) If you are in the CBD (and surrounds), you may be directed to Stay-at-Work or Return-to-Work. Further information is available at Evacuate If you are asked to evacuate, take your Go Bag and exit the building. If you are in the CBD, you may be directed to go to a designated CBD safety site (see map). When evacuating a multi-storey building, never use the lift take the stairs. At work, know your workplace evacuation points. At home, if you can, turn off the water, electricity and gas (always seek professional advice before reconnecting the gas). Make provision for pets and check on neighbours and anyone who may need help. If you need help leaving your home or work, ask a friend, neighbour or colleague to be your Emergency Buddy. Your Emergency Buddy is the person who comes and helps you in an emergency. Be prepared to walk.

4 Emergency information Toll Free Emergency Hotline number Emergency services have been working together to create emergency plans. Should a major emergency or incident take place, the authorities will broadcast a 1800 emergency hotline number to call for information. 000 For smaller local emergencies, dial 000 (triple zero) to contact the police, fire or ambulance (this is a free call from anywhere in Australia). If calling from a digital mobile phone, dial 112. Do not dial 000 or 112 for general advice or information. Tune in In a major emergency, radio and TV stations will interrupt programming to give public safety advice and updates. Hotlines will be established and these numbers will be broadcast for people seeking information. Radio stations. TV stations. Online (www.emergency.nsw.gov.au; news websites). In case of emergency - ICE If you are injured or unable to talk, an ICE contact saved on your mobile phone allows emergency services personnel to quickly contact your next of kin. Follow these steps on your mobile phone: Create a new contact. Type in ICE as the contact name. Type in the phone number of your next of kin and hit save. If you want to store more than one, label them ICE1, ICE2 etc. Remember to tell the person whose number you have entered.

Important information Make sure you know the emergency procedures for your workplace and for your children at school. Record the following information. Sydney CBD Safety Sites Source: Office of Emergency Services N Name: Date of birth: Address (work, school, home, other): Medicare number: Medical information: Home meeting location: School evacuation location: Business evacuation location: Out-of-town contact: Sydney Safety Sites Phone number: City North/City North West Precinct Mid City Precinct City South Precinct
