6 CHALLENGE: Inefficiency from underloading SOLUTION: Scalable power and cooling Over half the power consumption of power and cooling systems is fixed and does not vary with the IT load Efficiency degrades as the IT load goes down Oversized power and cooling systems are a primary contributor to inefficiency Many data centers have oversized power and cooling systems even before virtualizating Virtualization reduces loading even further sometimes to extremely low levels Power and cooling systems that can scale in capacity will reduce fixed losses and increase post-virtualization efficiency

8 CHALLENGE: Inefficiency of room-based cooling SOLUTION: Row-based cooling Traditional room-based (perimeter) cooling cannot handle the dynamic, roaming hot spots characteristic of virtualized loads Room cooling cannot respond to moving and changing loads Overcooling the entire room is extremely inefficient because long air paths and hot/cold mixing result in Moving more air than the IT equipment actually requires Generating cooler air than the IT equipment actually requires Humidifying/dehumidifying conflict between cooling units hard to diagnose and extremely inefficient Row-based cooling provides targeted, responsive, and lean cooling that is both EFFECTIVE and EFFICIENT

26 Virtualization and consolidation Summary What density strategy should I choose when virtualizing my servers? A spectrum of possibilities exists, each having a different set of consequences. The most common strategy chosen is to consolidate the postvirtualized servers. How do I implement a high density environment? A variety of solutions are offered that align with high density deployment strategies. pods are the most common solution chosen. Closely-coupled hot and cold air streams allow for predictable and efficient cooling. White paper Have I maximized my virtualization efficiency benefit? Virtualization is fully leveraged when power and cooling are right-sized to the post-virtualization load.
