ADHD: distracted Norms *set this with students AND teachers -norms are fluid -norms are not rules-they change -establish norms with teachers and students (everyone s expectations are different) -it s a style of communication -its respectful -allows people to feel like they can express/freedom to be real and vulnerable Special Ed History During the time period of How did that one piece of legislation/one piece impact Special Education? What is discrepancy-determining if a child has a learning disability If students have a high IQ, they should be able to succeed in education But that is not true (this is the definition of learning disabilities) Discrepancy- take an IQ test, reading test- you see the gap between the two and determine if they have a learning disability from their discrepancy -they consider this is a weigh to fail model- OLD MODEL -they cannot receive support if there isn t a large enough gap -we need to get the kids BEFORE they fall behind (we need to start interventions sooner) NEW MODEL- Response to Intervention Approach -3 tiered model using research based instruction -with this instruction, is is less likely students will have learning disabilities -START EARLY AGE -can have interventions without an IEP No Child Left Behind Act (Gen Ed) -laid the ground work for IDEA

2 -research based practices -ESEA (NEW NAME)- is supposed to be reauthorized. The concept to response of intervention will be in the Gen Ed as well. You are required to do what you can to observe all students interventions prior to discrepancy SELPA Purpose: the coordination of services of students with disabilities. They do not have any huge power, but just recommendations. SELPA is my umbrella, my resources. They can help coordinate services. For example, a district can have their own SELPA (San Diego Unified has their own) The Children s Center-counseling They are apart of due process services- when parents are not happy with our services Transition Services through SELPA -by law we are required to talk about transition goals -by 16, goals MUST be put in IEP on transition Tuesday July Educational Benefit Education Benefits starts from the case: Board of Education vs Rowley The case argued all the way to the Supreme Court. A little girl in kindergartern, hearing impaired, succeeded in school well, but going into 1 st grade, parents wanted her to have more services. School did not think it was their job to excel. The supreme court said that the education we provide as schools does not have to maximize the potential of the child. This determines the what is the educational benefit. Couldn t this example be a discrepancy model issue? The Discrepancy model was only used for specific learning disabilities. o It is up to the Team! Deciding if the IEP is necessary. Think about it this way: What goals would we put on a n IEP for this child? DSM=diagnostic statistical program Thursday Notes Reading

3 1. Phonemic/Phonological Awareness: The ability to hear and manipulate the sounds in words. Dyslexia: It is a problem in hearing, not visual jumbling of words. 2. Phonics: letter/sound correspondence. This brings in Now that we know sounds, now we are going to link them with these symbols. 3. Fluency: the ability to read things and understand it at a certain speed, have it make sense. 4. Comprehension: Two kinds of comprehension a. Narrative: text that is based on fiction b. Expository: This style of reading starts in 3 rd, this is a text that is more nonfiction. 5. Vocabulary: a distinct skill, knowledge of the words you are speaking, being able to hear words and understanding, reading words and understanding, spoken and understand A Resource for Finding Research Base Practices The Florida Center for Reading Research -there are research based activities we can access for more information and idea What Works Clearing House Curriculum Based Measurements -Norm Reference Test -we run these tests to determine these students levels 2 Categories of Assessments 1. Mastery Measurement: ways to measure this would be a unit test in math. Ways to measure student s progress and acheivement based on a certain criteria. 2. Curriculum Based Measurement (CBM): The daily/weekly check in. It does not tell us everything that is happening with the child, but it gives us key information on whether or not the child is progressing. (CMB website) How to Assess the 5 areas of Reading Phonemic Tools: DIBELS (dynamic indicators of basic early literacy skills) DAZE: based on an assessment called MAZE. MAZE is a passage with words long. First sentence is intact, then every sentence after that is intact with 3 choices. This is a GREAT tool to monitoring Reading Comprehension. This also covers Phonics AIMSweb (Spanish speaking assessments) (make sure to check CELDT scores to see where your student s language level is at)
