1 SECTION 0990 PAINTING PART GENERAL 1.01 SCOPE OF WORK: A. WORK INCLUDED: The Contractor shall furnish all necessary labor, materials, equipment and services to complete all field painting work indicated on the drawings and/or specified herein, including but not necessarily limited to the following: 1. Painting of exposed exterior ferrous metals and miscellaneous metals. 2. Painting of patch work and defaced areas resulting from demolition. 3. Painting of interior exposed ferrous miscellaneous metals including exposed metals embedded in concrete. 4. Painting of interior ferrous metals. 5. Painting of hollow metal doors and frames. 6. Painting of exposed piping for natural gas system. 7. All construction not factory finished shall be painted or finished as specified unless specifically noted otherwise. B. WORK NOT INCLUDED: The following items shall not be field painted: 1. Items made from brass, bronze, copper or stainless steel. 2. Manufactured items furnished with factory applied finishes, etc. 3. Electrical panels, switchgear, substations, transformers and other electrical equipment. 4. Compressors, air handling units and other mechanical equipment. 5. HVAC louvers and dampers. 6. Aluminum surfaces except where specifically noted otherwise. 7. Glass. 8. Rubber and fabric surfaces. 9. Interior finishes other than painted surfaces. C. RELATED WORK SPECIFIED ELSEWHERE: Refer to other Sections of these specifications for specific information concerning materials and construction requirements of work to be painted under this Section

2 1.02 QUALIFICATIONS: A. QUALIFICATIONS OF WORKMEN: All personnel engaged in the application of painting materials shall be thoroughly trained and experienced in the proper application of each material in accordance with the material manufacturer's written instructions and recommendations. B. QUALIFICATIONS OF SUBCONTRACTOR: The painting subcontractor shall have a record of successful completion of painting work for projects of similar scope and nature for a period of at least three years. The subcontractor shall be approved by the material manufacturer for application of his materials SUBMITTALS: A. COLOR CHARTS prepared by the paint manufacturer shall be submitted to the Engineer in accordance with Section 0130 for selection of colors. Colors will be selected by the Engineer from the manufacturer s standard selections. Selected colors will be returned to the Contractor in the form of an approved color schedule. The Engineer, however, reserves the right to vary colors of any surface to obtain the desired effect without increasing costs. No more than 10 different colors will be used for the project. B. Manufacturer's installation instructions shall be submitted to the Engineer in accordance with Section Maintain one set of these instructions at the jobsite for reference by the Engineer PRODUCT HANDLING: A. PROTECTION: 1. All necessary means shall be used to protect materials specified under this Section from damage before, during and after installation. 2. The work of other trades shall be adequately protected from damage resulting from work specified under this Section. 3. Protect factory finished work and work not requiring field painting from overspray, accidental spills, dripping, etc. 4. Protect all painted surfaces from the accumulation of dust during painting operations and thereafter until time of final inspection. 5. Protect Underwriter's labels on doors and other construction from paint coverage during painting operations. B. STORAGE AND HANDLING OF MATERIALS: 1. All materials shall be stored in field storage warehouses or the equivalent. Provide temporary space for the exclusive use of paint storage and paint mixing. No space will be allowed in the building for these purposes

3 2. Observe all regulations applicable to storage and mixing of paint and post all necessary safety signs, etc., as required by local and state codes and in conformity with good safety practices. Damage to any building or its contents caused by failing to exercise proper precautions to prevent such loss shall be made good by the painting contractor in a manner directed by the Engineer. 3. All paint, enamel, oil, turpentine and any other combustible or inflammable materials shall be stored in receptacles having tight covers each night or after each work period. All such receptacles shall be kept tightly closed. 4. All oily or paint-saturated cloths, rags or waste shall be removed from the buildings after each day's work or other work period. No flammable or combustible material of any kind shall be left unenclosed while inside buildings. C. REPLACEMENTS: 1. In the event of damage to materials or work in place, all necessary repairs and replacements shall be immediately made to the satisfaction of the Engineer at the sole expense of the painting contractor. 2. Work having factory finishes that are marred by the painting operation shall be replaced or field painted at the discretion of the Engineer at the sole expense of the painting contractor. D. PACKAGING AND MARKING: All materials shall be delivered to the jobsite in the manufacturer's standard unopened containers bearing the manufacturer's standard identifications and markings ENVIRONMENTAL CONDITIONS: A. TEMPERATURE: During application and drying of paint, a minimum temperature of 65 degrees F shall be maintained and held constant as possible. Surfaces whose temperature exceeds 120 degrees F shall not be painted. B. HUMIDITY: No painting shall be undertaken in damp, rainy weather or where relative humidity in area or spaces to be painted is greater than 65 percent. C. WIND: Paint shall not be applied when winds may cause dust or dirt to be embedded in the coating, nor when winds may interfere with proper spraying operation. D. VENTILATION: Provide adequate ventilation in all building areas where painting work is being performed. E. SAFETY: All painting shall be done under conditions and in a manner dictated by safe practices, using materials, tools and rigging of safe character. Comply with recognized safety rules and practices necessary to permit safe working

4 conditions for the workmen as well as to prevent hazards to others who may be in the vicinity of the work. Paint on or in the vicinity of energized electrical or rotating equipment, apparatus or lines shall not be done without the approval of the Engineer, and then only in accordance with all laws, rules, ordinances or regulations which apply. Precautions recommended by paint manufacturers in mixing and application shall be followed explicitly. F. JOB CONDITIONS: All building spaces shall be swept broom clean prior to commencement of painting work in the area. Painting of interior surfaces will not be permitted in an open unprotected environment COORDINATION: A. Cooperate with all affected trades in the preparation of surfaces and application of paint on work furnished under other sections of these specifications. B. Examine and study all drawings, specifications, schedules, manufacturer's data and other pertinent information relating to all work receiving field paint as required to produce and insure a proper painted finish. C. Materials shall be delivered in ample quantities sufficiently in advance of the need, to avoid any delays or interruptions in the work due to lack of proper materials. D. Surfaces left unfinished purposely to meet the requirements of other trades shall be painted or finished as part of work under this Section after all such work requiring unfinished surfaces is complete ACCEPTANCE AND TOLERANCES: A. Final acceptance of painting and finishing shall be based upon an inspection by the Engineer. Work failing to meet the requirements of these specifications will not be accepted. B. If the finished work, using the number of coats specified, does not yield a uniform color and texture acceptable to the Engineer, apply such additional coats as required to meet approval without additional cost to the Owner. PART PRODUCTS 2.01 MATERIALS: A. PAINTING MATERIALS: All painting materials shall be as manufactured by ICI Paint Stores, headquartered at 925 Euclid Avenue, Cleveland, OH (consisting of DEVOE, GLIDDEN, DEVOE COATINGS, AMERITONE,

5 DECRATREND, FULLER O BRIEN and SINCLAIR company-owned stores) or approved equal. 1. Generally, manufacturer shall mix all paints. Materials shall be thoroughly stirred. No materials shall be reduced or changed in any way except as specified by manufacturer. 2. Primers, sealers and undercoaters for paint work shall be of the same manufacture as the brand of paint specified. 3. Paint shall be well ground and mixed, and shall not settle or cake in the containers. Paint shall be readily broken up with a paddle to a smooth uniform paint of good brushing consistency, and shall dry hard to a smooth finish without streaking, running or sagging. 4. All colors and shades of paint shall conform to the approved color schedule, the manufacturer's color chart as submitted for color selection, and sample panels as approved by the Engineer. Any tinting or matching of colors shall only be done with the approval and concurrence of the Engineer. 5. Painting materials shall be furnished in accordance with the painting schedule at the end of this Section. ICI product identification names and numbers have been used in preparing the painting schedule. PART EXECUTION 3.01 EXAMINATION AND PREPARATION OF SURFACES: A. EXAMINATION OF SURFACES: The painting contractor shall examine all surfaces that are to be painted, work conditions under which painting work must be accomplished, and any other conditions affecting the proper painting of all work. Report to the Engineer any and all conditions which adversely affect the work and thereby preclude a high quality job of painting and finishing. No "waiver of responsibility" for incomplete, inadequate or defective underlying or adjoining work will be considered by the Engineer unless notice of such unsatisfactory conditions has been filed and agreed to, in writing, by the Engineer before the painting work begins. Application of first field coat on any surface shall be construed as evidence that the surfaces are acceptable to the painting contractor as being in proper condition for application of paint under this Section. Where there is any question of dryness of surfaces, test surfaces in the presence of the Engineer. B. GENERAL PREPARATION OF ALL SURFACES: All surfaces shall be cleaned and prepared in strict accordance with the paint system manufacturer's instructions and recommendations. Immediately prior to paint application, all surfaces shall be made perfectly clean, dry, smooth and free of all dust, dirt, grease, oil, mildew, splinters, rust, scale and other extraneous matter which might adversely affect the finished work. All surface defects shall be corrected prior to painting. Oil and grease shall be removed with solvent intended for such purpose. Loose scale and rust shall be removed by

6 scraping, wire brushing or sand blasting. Rough areas and spots in smooth surfaces shall be sanded and rubbed smooth to match adjacent areas. Enamel undercoats shall be sanded smooth after the undercoats are dry and prior to recoating. All holes, cracks and blemishes shall be filled with appropriate putty, filler, caulking or spackling compound after application of prime coat has become hard and dry and before second coat is applied. All abraded areas in shop applied prime coats shall be touched-up with matching primer. Apply appropriate barrier coating over any shop primed surfaces that are incompatible with the field paint system specified. Remove electrical switch plates, receptacle plates and exterior door hardware prior to painting. Replace such items after completion of painting in each area with skilled mechanics. C. ADDITIONAL PREPARATION OF FERROUS METAL SURFACES: Clean unprimed ferrous metal surfaces including bolts, nuts, washers and welds to bare metal with wire brush and appropriate solvent. Apply field prime coat to such items. Remove defective shop prime coats and field prime where necessary to insure a high quality finish. Galvanized metal shall be thoroughly cleaned of all foreign matter and etched to a dull paint-receptive surface, unless otherwise specified INSTALLATION AND WORKMANSHIP: A. PAINT APPLICATION: 1. Manufacturer's Instructions: All paint materials shall be applied in strict accordance with the manufacturer's written instructions and recommendations except where more stringent requirements are set forth by these specifications. 2. Mixing: Mixing of paint materials shall be in accordance with the paint manufacturer's written instructions. Provide new mixing containers of suitable size for mixing paint. No mixing will be permitted outside of these containers. With the exception of ready-mixed materials, all mixing shall be done at the jobsite. All paints shall be thoroughly mixed prior to application. Thinning, if required, shall be done with the type of reducer recommended by the paint manufacturer in accordance with the paint manufacturer's written instructions. 3. Painting of Shop Coat: Field prime coats may be omitted on materials shipped to jobsite already adequately primed except where an additional prime coat is specified in the painting schedule. Shop prime coats that have been damaged, marred or abraded shall be touched-up or reprimed. Any surfaces where shop prime coats are not compatible with special coatings shall receive a proper barrier coat of paint applied before applying subsequent coatings

7 4. Paint Film Thickness: Paint covering shall not exceed the spread per gallon recommended by the paint manufacturer. Paint shall be applied in such a manner as to yield the dry film thickness recommended by the manufacturer. Film thickness indicated in the painting schedule are expressed in mils of dry film thickness. B. SPECIAL APPLICATION INSTRUCTIONS: 1. Paint top, bottom and side edges of all metal doors. Paint metal doors prior to installation of hardware. Seal top, bottom and side edges of all wood doors. 2. All gas piping shall be painted ANSI Safety Yellow. C. SEQUENCING AND SCHEDULING: 1. Painting work shall not begin until after the Engineer's issue of approved color schedule and approval of field sample panels. 2. The painting contractor shall be responsible for the final finish on his work and should, therefore, sequence and schedule his work to be performed under conditions that will yield first quality work conforming in every respect to these specifications. 3. Painting work shall not be started until the building structure is properly dried in and ready for painting. 4. Painting work in an area shall not be started until all other work has been completed and all materials requiring field painted finishes are permanently in place. Any extra painting work resulting from the failure to comply with this requirement shall be performed by the painting contractor at no additional cost to the Owner. 5. Stop exterior work sufficiently early to permit paint film to set up before condensation, frost and moisture caused by night temperature drop occur. 6. Each coat of paint shall be allowed to thoroughly dry before application of next coat. Unless otherwise specified, exterior oil paints shall dry at least 48 hours between coats. Interior paints shall dry at least 24 hours between coats. 7. Paint hollow metal doors two coats prior to installation of door hardware. Paint top and bottom edges of doors prior to erection

8 D. WORKMANSHIP: 1. All workmanship shall be of the highest grade. All materials shall be applied to completely cover all surfaces evenly so as to dry uniformly in color and sheen, free from runs, sags, laps, skips, holidays, pinholes, wrinkles, shiners, streaks, and brush marks. Each coat shall be applied smooth, worked out evenly and allowed to dry before subsequent coat is applied. Paint shall not be floated on or applied in thick, heavy coats. The priming coat shall be thoroughly applied to fill all pores, crevices, etc. All brushes, spray nozzles and rollers shall be clean and in good condition. 2. Make edges of paint adjoining other materials or colors sharp and clean without overlapping FIELD QUALITY CONTROL: A. Before applying each coat of paint, the painting contractor shall thoroughly inspect the previous coat making certain that it is ready to receive the next specified coat. Previous coating shall be thoroughly cured. Allow specified drying time and check film with fingernail to be certain it is cured. Noncompatible and nonadherent materials shall be removed from previous coat. B. The Engineer shall be notified and given an opportunity to inspect each paint coat in major building areas prior to application of next coat. Failure to make such notification may result in additional coats at no additional expense to the Owner. C. Immediately prior to final inspection, the painting contractor shall thoroughly inspect the project for defective painting work. All defects in paint application and surfaces damaged during the course of construction shall be repaired and repainted prior to final inspection CLEANING: A. During the course of construction, the painting contractor shall periodically clean up all surplus materials, debris, and rubbish resulting from the painting operation and remove same from the jobsite. B. Upon completion of the work, the painting contractor shall remove all surplus materials, scaffolds, debris, etc. from the premises. All rooms and spaces shall be left broom clean. C. All misplaced painting and paint dust shall be removed from glass, light

9 fixtures, floors, mechanical equipment, electrical equipment and other building construction elements. Cleaning operations shall be carried out in such a manner that finished surfaces will not be marred or damaged. D. The building premises and all painted surfaces shall be left clean in a condition satisfactory to the Engineer. E. Factory finished surfaces that cannot be properly cleaned without damage, shall be electrostatically painted as directed by the Engineer. (See Attached Painting Schedule)
