5 Do s and Don ts for every Oracle SOA Suite project The Oracle SOA Suite is comprehensive, which can make it hard to know where to start. That is why we have produced this list of Do s and Don t s for Oracle SOA Suite. The average organisation has over 300 IT systems, each of which are replaced every 5-10 years, leading to out of date and mismatching data on which business decisions depend. As the number of systems and applications increase organizations face challenges ranging from integration, maintaining legacy systems and upgrade. This will make your environment an administrative nightmare. The DO s: 1. Keep the big picture in mind when building your SOA composites We typically find that clients start their Oracle SOA Suite journey when they select it as an Enterprise level SOA platform for their business, rather than as a niche departmental solution. They will either use it to build a Composite Application with a group of re-usable Enterprise services, or to migrate from another middleware product. This approach reduces scope creep and should even be encouraged, however as the decision to take Oracle SOA was probably made at an Enterprise level, we recommend that you keep the big picture in mind when building your Oracle SOA Suite solution. In particular we recommend that your CIO or Head of IT highlight which systems are currently working well and which need to be augmented or replaced so that new SOA projects are built with the future requirements in mind. One way this can be achieved is to create a business systems information-planning matrix. Typically this would involve identifying the processes within departments, business entities that each process touches and the IT systems that currently facilitate those processes. We would then hold a series of workshops with department heads to understand where data is inaccurate, out-dated or not readily available. These are all excellent opportunities for process improvement using Oracle SOA Suite. Any process and system that needs to be augmented can be augmented using Oracle SOA Suite to create SOA services and may take the form of a Composite Application built in Oracle ADF, WebCenter or an alternate frontend solution that then integrates with SOA Suite services. Where it is clear that IT systems must be replaced, the CIO or Head of IT could investigate either COTS system or bespoke solution. In either case it is highly likely that this new system will need to be integrated with other Enterprise systems, which will be done via SOA Suite. Setting an IT systems and process improvement strategy will help you to develop useful services that can be leveraged many times within your enterprise and manage your services well. The average organisation has over 300 IT systems, each of which are replaced every 5-10 years, leading to out of date and mismatching data on which business decisions depend. As the number of systems and applications increase organizations face challenges ranging 1 P a g e from integration, maintaining legacy systems and upgrade. This will make your environment an administrative nightmare.

2. Leverage the right aspects of the tool for the right things Often we visit a client where they have already undergone a large-scale Oracle SOA Suite project. In many cases the project may have gone live but there are often lots of useful parts of the solution that have been left out because their implementation partner was not aware of how to fully leverage all aspects of the tool. Othertimes we visit a client who has not used the tool consistently or appropriately, for example, One of the advantages Oracle SOA Suite has over other SOA products is that it covers all of the capabilities your business needs to deliver robust, agile and reliable SOA solutions. These capabilities, taken as a whole, provide the ability to create complete solutions at the enterprise level. The SOA Suite is large and very flexible, which can make it confusing to know which parts of the stack to use. Do use the right technology for the right reason, for example: Use OSB for service publishing and transformation. OSB is better for developing re-usable services because has an associated registry and repository. This makes it much easier to understand what services are available, the impact on changing a service, and enables us to manage service SLA s Use BPEL Process Manager either for user based processes and workflow, or for system processes that use long lasting transactions. For convenience, it can also be used for transformation when already using BPEL Use Oracle BAM for monitoring and triggering actions based on real-time events At Integrella we provide you with a unified product suite to meet all of your SOA needs. The diagram below shows the Oracle SOA Suite Architecture and what your enterprise should be aiming for. 3. Use BAM to monitor your business data There is a very useful business monitoring product within the SOA Suite called Business Activity Monitoring or simply known as BAM. It keeps track of business events as they occur and reporting and responding to them with alerts when exceptional situations happen. 2 P a g e

So how does BAM differ from your traditional BI (Business Intelligence), of which there are many. Traditional reporting tools such as Oracle Reports and Oracle Discoverer as well as Oracles latest Business Intelligence Suite can be used to provide some real-time reporting needs but they do not provide the event driven reporting that gives the business a continuously updated view of the current business situation. BI reports are generated and delivered either on a scheduled basis or in response to a user request. Any changes to the information will not be reflected until the next scheduled run or until a user requests the report to be rerun. BAM on the other hand is an event-driven reporting tool that generates alerts and reports in real time, as events occur in the services and processes, the business has defined they are captured by BAM and reports and views are updated in real time. Business users tend to really like BAM and it is included within SOA Suite. We recommend that you make use of it. 4. Publish clear development standards Unfortunately we have often visited several clients who have ended up with a giant mess of an Oracle SOA solution. We came across one customer who had build huge ADF solution in one application, rather than separating out components into smaller sub-applications. Another client had several hundred SOA Composites deployed to a single default partition. Bad design leads to a spaghetti mess and the inability to deploy discrete units of code without affecting larger areas of the code base. When working in a Team environment it is best to create finely grained applications. For example create a top level application up front with XSD s and WSDLs defined, this could also include a Mediator that calls a number of BPEL processes. Then have each developer work on their BPEL processes in their own Application and Project, thus not having lots of Projects under one Application. Standards should be laid down to ensure that artefacts are created with quality in mind, for example: 1. Reusable Data Types such as WSDLs, XSDs, Fault Policies and DVMs etc should be stored in a shared location that is MDS. With this in place make use of the abstract WSDLs in the composites at design time and concrete WSDLs at runtime should be defined/modelled 2. Standard SOA design patterns used for each client should be employed 3. Complex SQL queries should be built in a separate data services layer 4. Oracle SOA Components should be used consistently 5. There is a lack of Data services layer 6. A consistent approach to error handling should be followed 3 P a g e

7. SOA resources such as WSDLs, XSDs, Fault Policies and DVMs etc. should be stored in a shared location that is MDS. With this in place make use of the abstract WSDLs in the composites at design time and concrete WSDLs at runtime 5. Do Make use of Coherence, where appropriate Coherence is a high performance cache. Companies like HSBC are using Coherence extensively to store, update and retrieve information in a Cache across many in memory clustered servers, without the need for a database. There are 2 parts to using Coherence. The configuration of Coherence requires an administrator. Client side use of an existing coherence instance is relatively straightforward and there is a Coherence adapter in JDeveloper. Coherence is available for free with Web Logic. However it may make sense to have Coherence run separately if high throughput is required. The DON Ts: 1. Don t forget to Tune your Oracle SOA solution We often get called in when everything is burning and the solution is grinding to a halt. Oracle SOA Suite is a highly performant solution, however it does log a lot of information to the database which of course can be and needs to be tuned. The number 1 problem that we come across on Oracle SOA solutions that have turned bad are that the solution was developed but not tuned. We recommend you implement housekeeping so that your solution does not grind to a halt at some future date. Some of the steps we recommend are as follows: 1. Implement a purging policy, especially around the dehydration store. If customers do not need to know the full trace of a process for a certain period it should be cleared down as BPEL is chatty and takes up a lot of space 2. Turn off the parts of the solution that you are not using in EM so that the memory footprint is lower. For instance, if you have multiple versions of composites deployed, do not forget to de-activate older versions so reduce the memory footprint 3. Get a DBA to tune the database and create database indexes on tables as appropriate 4. Use no more than 50 activities per BPEL process 5. Avoid loops in your BPEL like the plague 2. Don t underestimate the challenge of implementing SOA Suite or any other SOA implementation 4 P a g e

It s always good to point out that SOA is not simple. Adopting SOA is a journey; first you need to understand that it will ultimately change the way you do business. Everything you do in the business needs to be reviewed and weighed and measured to see if it can be leveraged as a service. To do this, you need to revisit all your business processes, and look for automation opportunities within each process. Start with the processes that are fundamental to your day-to-day business and expose the common elements as services. Immediately, these will become available to be used in different contexts. If done correctly, it will not only be possible, but relatively simple to combine existing services in new ways and in so doing, drive innovation in your business. Done without care it may very well be a lead to the beginning of a very long painful journey. 3. Don t approach your SOA solution as a product or an application Probably the biggest thing to note of SOA being different is the fact that SOA is not a product, or even a technology. It s more like a mindset. In simple terms SOA gives existing systems the flexibility and agility to respond to a business environment needs efficiently. 4. Having implemented Oracle Service Bus, do not expect it to qualify your business to have now implemented SOA An Oracle Service Bus simple known as OSB will add as an important tools to your environment, but you will still have to do a lot of work to get your SOA framework in place. Simply buying and integrating an OSB into your environment does not mean that you implemented SOA and a lot of organizations tend to adopt this ideology. In fact this approach is likely to lead you more towards OSB Oriented Architecture. This has common elements within SOA, but not the full SOA Suite and will give you some but not all its benefits. In short what you will have is just an integration platform and not much else. 5. Don t underestimate the importance of SOA Governance The need of SOA governance is limited at a creation level but it can be spanned at several other service management life cycle aspects. Enterprises need to enforce governing policies around each and every aspect of service life cycle and the best way of enforcing this is by comparing all existing services against a standards checklist at each phase of the service life cycle architecture. The Oracle Service Registry provides visibility into services, service providers, and related resources across the enterprise. Specifically, it publishes the Oracle Metadata Repository (MDS) services to the outside world. It provides a configurable, scalable, secure repository, called the Oracle Application Server UDDI Registry, of Web 5 P a g e

services that can be managed, discovered and governed by Oracle Fusion Middleware. The Oracle Service Registry advertises the existence of these services to potential consumers across the enterprise. The Oracle Service Registry provides the following services for an enterprise: 1. Enables service providers to publish and advertise their offerings 2. Allow service consumers to find, access and invoke services that meet defined criteria 3. Provides critical features for SOA governance It is highly recommended to buy the licence for Oracle Service Registry and leverage Oracle Middleware at an Enterprise level rather than at a project level.
