1 Unit 18: Video production and editing (LEVEL 3) Learning outcomes By completing this unit, candidates will have the technical skills and awareness of creative conventions for producing small-scale videos for specific purposes. Through their practical experiences candidates will be able to: research and plan for video productions as part of a team record material using appropriate sets, lighting, sound equipment and other resources demonstrate skills in post-production work such as vision mixing, continuity, sound overlay and titling, and evaluate both the quality of their product and their success as a team. 3 Assessment This unit is centre-assessed and externally moderated. In order to achieve this unit, candidates must collate a portfolio of evidence showing that they can meet all the assessment objectives. Portfolios of work must be produced independently. They will need to be made available, together with witness statements and any other necessary supporting documentation, to the OCR Visiting Moderator when required. Guidance on assessment and evidence Candidates should gain knowledge, understanding and skills through practical tasks related to their own productions as well as to professionally produced videos. It is intended that small scale videos are produced here such as instructional or music videos rather than large-scale products such as films or television programmes that can be produced in Unit 22 Film and television production and editing. This unit can use scripts produced in Unit 21: Writing for the screen, and soundtracks produced in Unit 18: Audio for the moving image, or music tracks produced for Unit 25: Music recording and production. Evidence for some individual candidates may also be produced for Unit 6: Production management in media organisations. Candidates should work in teams of a size that enables them to make a significant contribution to the video. They may carry out one discrete job role such as a camera operator or can multitask. There is no requirement for all candidates to take on the same responsibilities for researching, filming and editing. For Assessment Objective 1, candidates should have the opportunity to investigate a range of video products, although only analyses for two products need be presented as evidence for the unit. Evidence could take the form of a written report or a verbal presentation supported by a witness statement. For Assessment Objectives 2 and 3, evidence for the schedule and scripts/storyboards must be written. Other evidence could take the form of production diaries or minutes of meetings. It is expected that evidence for Assessment Objective 3 will take the form of a copy of the final video supported by a tutor witness statement identifying the standard of the individual candidate s work and their contribution to the team. For Assessment Objective 4 the evaluation could take the form of a written report or a verbal report supported by taped evidence or a tutor witness statement. The tutor may take the role of client.
