3 Introduction Every school has its own story to tell. The context in which teaching and learning takes place influences the processes and procedures by which the school makes decisions around curriculum, instruction, and assessment. The context also impacts the way a school stays faithful to its vision. Many factors contribute to the overall narrative such as an identification of stakeholders, a description of stakeholder engagement, the trends and issues affecting the school, and the kinds of programs and services that a school implements to support student learning. <br><br> The purpose of the Executive Summary (ES) is to provide a school with an opportunity to describe in narrative form the strengths and challenges it encounters. By doing so, the public and members of the school community will have a more complete picture of how the school perceives itself and the process of self-reflection for continuous improvement. This summary is structured for the school to reflect on how it provides teaching and learning on a day to day basis. Page 1

4 Description of the School Describe the school's size, community/communities, location, and changes it has experienced in the last three years. Include demographic information about the students, staff, and community at large. What unique features and challenges are associated with the community/communities the school serves? The purpose of the (ISCO) is to create a world where online learning is delivering significant improvements to our educational system: helping to reduce the nation's high school dropout rate; bringing students back into public schools; providing new opportunities for students; and helping prepare them for college and life after high school. The vision of is to be a premier school in Colorado. We provide a high-quality alternative to the traditional classroom enabling secondary aged learners to acquire the skills, attitudes, and competencies necessary to live a productive life in the 21st century. ISCO's mission is to clear the path for student success through educational opportunity, access, flexibility, support, and creativity. School Opened: 2008 First Graduating Class: 2009 Total Graduates all years: 328 Accreditation: Northwest Accreditation Commission (NWAC) and AdvancED Memberships: Insight School is a member of the National Association of College Admissions Counselors (NACAC), Colorado Council of High School and College Relations (CCHS/CR), International Association for K12 Online Learning (inacol), Rocky Mountain Association of College Admission Counselors (RMACAC), and American School Counselors Association (ASCA). School Enrollment: 720 Founded in 1999, K12 is an AdvancED-accredited education management corporation that provides propriety online curriculum and education and school management services to students in kindergarten through high school. K12 is the nation's leading online learning provider for grades K-12: more than 100,000 K-12 students in 33 states are enrolled in online public schools that use the K12 program and are managed by K12 school leaders and education professionals. The K12 mission is to provide any student access to exceptional curriculum and tools that enable him or her to maximize his or her success in life, regardless of geographic, financial, or demographic circumstance. Online public school is a publicly funded school where learning happens at home and/or in local learning centers one or more days per week. This option is an alternative to the local public school and is offered through districts, state agencies, and/or charter schools. Virtual schools exist to serve the students who would thrive best outside the four walls of the traditional classroom. Families may choose a K12 education for their student for the following reasons: The student is academically advanced and the classroom pace moves too slowly The student's family seeks to oversee their student's education while incorporating religious/moral instruction The student's family is dissatisfied with their current school and seeks an alternative education to fit their student's needs Page 2

5 The student is an elite athlete or performer with a busy travel schedule The student needs individual courses not available in his or her own school or home district Insight has 25 state-certified teachers dedicated to providing academic support for each individual student. Each teacher has a Bachelor or Master's degree and is highly qualified in their subject area. We have six licensed Counselors and one licensed Social Worker plus five Academic Advisors which make up our Student Support Team. ISCO uses the Aventa Learning by K¹² curriculum. The full Aventa high school course catalog offers math, English, science, and history courses in multiple versions--foundations, Standard, and, where applicable, Advanced Placement (AP)--to meet the needs of diverse learners. Insight School course levels include: - Standard courses are for students with a strong foundational knowledge and aptitude in the subject area. - AP courses hold students to a greater degree of accountability for in-depth study of the subject. Students can also take up to four levels of world languages (depending on the language), and choose from a variety of electives, including Anthropology, Web Design, and Digital Photography. Below is a sample of what a typical high school student in a K12 online virtual school program experiences in a day: Logs in to the Online School and views their Student Dashboard to read news and announcements. Checks Kmail for new messages from the school and teachers. Uses the "Raise Your Hand" tool functionality in an online course to ask the Geometry teacher a question about last night's homework. Organizes materials and conducts Chemistry lab - Salts: Precipitation Reactions. Works through an asynchronous World History ClassConnect recording. Completes in-class reading assignment and responds to a peer on the threaded discussion board. Attends ClassConnect discussion of Daisy's character in The Great Gatsby and shares a response via webcam. Completes Spanish II voice recording on practicing conversations using new vocabulary. Instant messages the school counselor about ACT Exam information session. Heads out for soccer practice. K12 and ISCO offer a wide range of extracurricular clubs and programs at both national and local levels. These opportunities provide numerous socialization points for students and families, along with a family directory for those desiring an even greater sense of community. Insight offers a variety of clubs including Student Council, National Honor Society, Music, Choir, Photo, Art, and Writing. Students also participate in activities and athletics at their local high school. K12's high school program offers a comprehensive school counseling program that includes a full range of college and career services. College and career planning courses and tools provide students and parents extensive information on career and college opportunities, including the admission process. Pathfinder, an online college and career tool, aids students in identifying their interests, values, and skills. All students at work closely with their counselor to develop their Multi Year Plan, select courses, and to create and review regularly their Individual Learning Plan. Students are required to complete academic and career goals and strategies using their results on interests, values and skills surveys. In addition, students have access 24/7 to Pathfinder, a career and college tool to complete searches, financial aid and scholarship information, surveys and allows for documentation of their results in an individual account. Career Exploration and Finding Your Path courses are required for all students and taught by our counselors. Courses such as the Finding Your Path series, Achieving Your College and Career Goals, and Reaching Your Academic Potential assist students in setting goals, assessing strengths, and developing post-secondary plans. School counselors and other staff guide students Page 3

6 through an in-depth exploration of their education and career interests, help them to define their goals, and create a path through high school that will enable them to achieve their post-secondary goals. Most Wednesdays, K12 hosts national online workshops related to college preparation as well as career exploration. K12 also holds national virtual career days with multiple industries represented and connects students with the world's largest online college fair. All students at Insight School work closely with their counselor to develop their Multi Year Plan, select courses and to create and review regularly their Individual Learning Plan and their required state of Colorado Individual Career and Academic Plan ICAP. Our seniors postgraduate plans include 4 year in-state and out of state colleges, 2 year community colleges, vocational and technical schools, volunteering, mission work, internships, military, and employment. Over the last three years, there have been profound business, management, leadership and culture problems at Insight. The school changed hands in regards to ownership of management companies two times, until K12 acquired Insight in During time, the school saw three different Executive Directors, which caused instability at the top of the organization, and a lack of adhering business requirements and statelevel compliance. Our response to these known factors that have affected the school are the integration of a strong, unified front related as a leadership team to assess the current state of the school, implement interventions and processes to help fortify our operational efficiency and ensure that we are working in the direction to elevate Insight. Students find out how they can succeed in their education given their own personal aspirations and abilities., a K12 partner school established in 2008, uses a unique model of instruction where all students receive differentiated learning geared toward a student's capabilities and academic performance. The ISCO Futures Program helps a student focus on two academies - the Career Exploration Academy where they discover interests, values, learning styles, academic and career goals; and the Gateway Academy where they establish their own individual Plan of Study which includes their multi-year plan, career cluster focus and post secondary options they can pursue to reach their future goals. -A K12 partner school authorized by Julesburg School District -Available statewide to students in grades Unique instructional model and academic programs designed to accommodate student(s) interest and capabilities -Organized academic programs around the ISCO Futures model, allowing each student to pursue a distinct academic pathway through the two Academies - Career Exploration Academy and the Gateway Academy. -Students will be able to explore the 6 Industry Sectors and 17 Career Clusters and create their own Plan of Study which will help determine their course schedule, their club participation, job shadowing and internship possibilities, concurrent enrollment and pursuit of post secondary plans. -As part of enrollment students are required to complete an orientation course, Scantron Performance assessment, and demonstrate compatability and commitment to online learning Mandatory face to face enrollment sessions - Individual enrollment Counseling Interview with student and parent which includes completion of the student's initial -Individual Learning Plan ILP -Career and College Readiness and Preparation is available through our state certified high school counselors -Student Support Team consisting of a Coordinator, Counselors, Advisors and Social Worker to provide services to all students in the academic, career and college and personal and social areas. Core Academy/path - Each new 9th grade student and those entering in grades are part of the core academy/path upon enrollment. After one year (9th grade students) or one semester (10-12th grade students) request for transfer to another academy/path can be made to the school - The primary focus of the core academy/path is for students seeking a general high school education and intend to enter the workforce or military upon graduation - Students receive a general high school diploma, requiring 24 credits to qualify for graduation The Student Expereience and Expectations at ISCO includes an individual committment to their learning which will be centered around their interests and capabilities. A student will be required to be involved in their Indivualized Learning Plans throughout the school year which will focus on the ISCO Futures Program and the 2 Academies. Students will be expected to particpate in teacher-led sychronous sessions, one on one sessions with teachers and advisor and counselor led sessions to provide every opportunity for a student at ISCO to be successful. 8 Career Academy/path - Students may select to enter the career path/academy based on eligibility (see above), required minimum GPA, and ILP performance - The primary focus of the career academy/path is for students wishing to pursue a continuing technical or career education at a Colorado community college, technical or trade school upon graduation - Insight Colorado will work to provide concurrent enrollment with Colorado Community Colleges online system, and/or district-based technical programs - Students receive a general high school diploma with endorsements based on their career path and successful completion of courses and concurrent enrollment, requiring 26 credits to qualify for graduation ISCO is a full-time public school and does not allow dual enrollment. A student cannot be dually enrolled in any other full-time or part-time public school while enrolled at College Academy/path - Students may select to enter the college path/academy based on eligibility (see above), required minimum GPA, and ILP performance - The primary focus of the college academy/path is for students wishing to pursue a 4-year degree at a college or university upon graduation - Insight Colorado will work to provide concurrent enrollment with Colorado Community Colleges online system, as well as internships with profession-based local companies - Students receive a general high school diploma with endorsements based successful completion of courses and concurrent enrollment/internships, requiring 28 credits to qualify for graduation Page 6
