2 About Duchy Hospital The Duchy Hospital Cardiac Catheter Laboratory is a new facility situated at Duchy Hospital, Truro in Cornwall. It was built as part of a major investment which also added an additional laminar flow theatre, bringing the total at the hospital to three, extra consulting rooms and a dedicated short stay unit for day case surgery (Ambulatory Care Unit). Our Surgeons All of our surgeons, physicians and staff are highly qualified, experienced and enthusiastic professionals with a broad range of specialisms. We deliver continuity of care by ensuring that all patients are under the direct care of the same consultant surgeon or physician from the very first appointment, through treatment to the follow-up appointment. Our Patients Patients can arrange their treatment at times convenient to them as we offer appointments throughout the day, including early morning, evening and Saturday clinics. Our visiting hours are flexible, allowing friends and family members to visit at convenient times. There is ample, free parking at the hospital in addition to excellent train and bus links for non-drivers. 4 About Duchy Hospital The new Cardiac Catheter Laboratory is a state of the art, purpose built facility, managed and operated by staff at Duchy Hospital since it recently opened in January The unit offers a high level of service ensuring our patients will always be treated in a clean, comfortable and caring environment. The Duchy Hospital Cardiology Service offers a unique service for the Cornish community and surrounding areas. With all the benefits afforded by a private hospital, such as low infection rates and award winning food; patients also have the opportunity to both wait, and be treated in bright and clean dedicated areas. The RIS PACS system allows digital images and reports to be sent to GPs and consultants electronically. Theatres and the Catheter Laboratory Our patients will undergo their procedure in the Theatre Suite or within the Catheter Laboratory. Operating theatres have systems which change and filter the air compliant with rigorous national standards. Infection rates at Duchy Hospital are consistently low and this is maintained through stringent cleaning regimes, regular air quality checks and hand hygiene policies.
6 Cardiology Consultant Profiles Dr Sen Devadathan Dr Stephen Evans MBBS MD DM FRCP BSc PhD FRCP After completing basic medical training and sub specialisation in cardiology in India, he moved to United Kingdom in 2000 and completed interventional fellowship in Manchester and Stoke-on-Trent. He specialises in angioplasty and stenting, percutaneous coronary intervention and permanent pacemaker implantation. He is interested in secondary revascularisation and coronary intervention in patients with difficult vascular access. Dr. Devadathan is a fellow of the Royal college of Physicians of Edinburgh and an active member of the British Cardiac Society (BCS) and the European association of percutaneous coronary intervention (EAPCI). He represents the non surgical centres at the British Cardiac Intervention Society (BCIS) council. Dr Stephen Evans is a Consultant Cardiologist, based in Cornwall UK. He practices at the Royal Cornwall Hospital and the Ramsay Duchy Hospital. He trained in London, Bristol, and Auckland, New Zealand. He has special interests in Coronary Intervention and Trans-Oesophageal Echocardiography. Appointed in 2000 to establish interventional cardiology services locally, he has been involved in their development ever since. He is an active member of the British Cardiac Interventional Society (BCIS) and has frequently been a Faculty member, giving lectures and case presentations at national meetings. He believes strongly in patient choice and that both communication and continuity of care are essential for good medical practice. When not at work his hobbies are mainly sporting or related to his wife and 4 children. He holds the dubious personal record of having broken more bones playing cricket than skiing, so far.
7 Cardiology Consultant Profiles Dr Robert Trevor Johnston Dr Samy Karikalan Kandasamy A native of Northern Ireland, with undergraduate training in Scotland, Trevor did his Cardiology training in Leicester and Nottingham where he was Lecturer in Cardiology and senior registrar at Queens Medical Centre, Nottingham. He was appointed Consultant Cardiologist in Truro in 1993 where he set up the invasive cardiology services for Cornwall, and was instrumental in setting up interventional cardiology in 2000 at RCHT. Trevor, with his 20 years as a Consultant Cardiologist in Cornwall, has a wealth of experience of general cardiological problems. He has particular expertise in coronary angioplasty and stenting in the treatment of coronary artery disease and in the management of cardiac arrhythmias, heart failure and inherited cardiac conditions which includes implanting pacemakers, heart failure resynchronisation devices, and defibrillators. He has served two periods as Cardiology specialty lead for Cornwall, and in the most recent was credited with setting up the primary angioplasty service for treatment of acute heart attack in the County. He has sat on many advisory panels, presented at national and international meetings, and as an investigator, principle investigator and outcomes adjudicator participated in multinational clinical trials, being regarded as a key cardiology opinion. He was elected council member of the British Cardiovascular Society in MD, MRCP PGC Dr Kandasamy is a Consultant Cardiologist at Royal Cornwall Hospital where he has worked since He specialises in management of Ischaemic Heart Disease, Arrhythmia, Heart Failure, Valve Diseases and Adult Congenital Heart Disease. His special interest is Cardiac Imaging and holds current accreditation for Trans-thoracic and Transoesophageal echocardiography and leads the echo department. He has completed Cardiac MRI training in Royal Brompton Hospital recently and is working to establish this new service in Cornwall. He is also the Clinical Lead for Adult Congenital Heart Disease. He is a keen badminton player, enjoys his cycling and travelling.
8 Cardiology Consultant Profiles Dr. Patrick Owens MD FRCP Dr Audrius Simaitis MD PhD I graduated from University College Dublin in 1991, and completed my general medical training in Dublin, Ireland.I began specialty training in cardiology in 1994, and completed my MD, conferred in I moved to Manchester in 1998 to research molecular mechanisms of vascular disease, including a clinical attachment to the Manchester Royal Infirmary, I returned to clinical cardiology in 2000 and completed my subspecialty training in interventional cardiology/general medicine on the South West cardiology training scheme. Working as a consultant in Treliske Truro, for several years, I brought forward the interventional programme there, including introduction of rotational atherectomy to the unit. I co-founded the CardioScope LLP, which continues to deliver quality cardiology services to the population of Cornwall. Dr Audrius Simaitis is a Consultant Cardiologist, practicing at Royal Cornwall Hospital and Ramsay Duchy Hospital since He trained in Lithuania and worked in Australia before moving to United Kingdom in He has special interests in pathophysiology of ischaemic heart disease, complex stenting procedures and stenting of chronic total occlusions. Member of the British Cardiac Interventional Society (BCIS). Believes that mutual communication and establishing a partnership with the patient is essential part of the provision of good health care service. His hobbies are swimming and surfing. My main sub speciality clinical interest is in interventional cardiology and pacing. I am married with three children, and in my spare time I enjoy the mountains, climbing up them in the Summer, and skiing down them in the Winter!
9 Cardiology Consultant Profiles Dr Alistair Slade Dr Robin van Lingen Dr Alistair Slade has been a Consultant Cardiologist in Truro since He trained in Cardiology at the Brompton Hospital and St George s Hospital in London focussing on arrhythmia management including pacemakers, catheter ablation and complex device implantation including the implantable defibrillator. He was involved as a principal investigator in both national and international pacemaker studies. Since appointment he has expanded considerably local arrhythmia services and introduced cardiac resynchronisation therapy (CRT) in Cornwall. MBChB, FRCP Dr van Lingen did his undergraduate training at the University of Cape Town, and his post graduate specialisation in the South West. His sub-specialty interests are Interventional Cardiology and the expanding field of Cardiac CT. He also leads the Cornwall Heart Failure services, and is heavily involved in the development of cardiology research in Cornwall. His personal vision is to strive for excellence in patient centred cardiac care, delivered personally, with compassion and integrity. He has too many boring personal interests too list, ranging from charcuterie to surfing, but can usually be found mid week evenings during the summer months losing enthusiastically on the cricket field with the rest of the Cornish healthcare community as a member of the Methigion Cricket Club.
