Introduction Every school system has its own story to tell. The context in which teaching and learning takes place influences the processes and procedures by which the school system makes decisions around curriculum, instruction, and assessment. The context also impacts the way a school system stays faithful to its vision. Many factors contribute to the overall narrative such as an identification of stakeholders, a description of stakeholder engagement, the trends and issues affecting the school system, and the kinds of programs and services that a school system implements to support student learning.

The purpose of the Executive Summary (ES) is to provide a school system with an opportunity to describe in narrative form the strengths and challenges it encounters. By doing so, the public and members of the community will have a more complete picture of how the school system perceives itself and the process of self-reflection for continuous improvement. This summary is structured for the school system to reflect on how it provides teaching and learning on a day to day basis. Page 1

Description of the School System Describe the school system's size, community/communities, location, and changes it has experienced in the last three years. Include demographic information about the students, staff, and community at large. What unique features and challenges are associated with the community/communities the school system serves? The mission of the Arizona Agribusiness & Equine Center is to prepare young adults for excellence in academics, social responsibility and lifelong learning. The Arizona Agribusiness & Equine Center provides educational programs for high school students in grades 9 through 12, as well as concurrent transferable college courses, at locations on or adjacent to campuses of the Maricopa County Community Colleges and Yavapai Community College (Prescott Valley). Students at the Arizona Agribusiness & Equine Center's school locations are drawn primarily from the City of Phoenix and surrounding areas of Prescott Valley. Arizona Agribusiness & Equine Center's schools are open to all students within the state, while 25% of the students graduate from high school with both a diploma and an Associate Degree, thereby acquiring two years of college credit before entering the post secondary four-year universities. The Arizona Agribusiness & Equine Center obtained its initial charter from the Arizona State Board for Charter Schools in July of The State Board continually monitors the Arizona Agribusiness & Equine Center, including on-site reviews every five years, while Arizona Department of Education ("ADE") is responsible for the oversight of the Arizona Agribusiness & Equine Center's fiscal management and academic acceptability. The Arizona Agribusiness & Equine Center opened its doors in July 1997, with an initial enrollment of approximately 98 high school students in grades 9 through 12. The initial facility consisted of leased space from Maricopa Community Colleges. In 1999 the Arizona Agribusiness & Equine Center purchased a building and located at the South Mountain Community College campus in Phoenix pursuant to a license from the Community College. The Arizona Agribusiness & Equine Center then continued to purchase property adjacent to South Mountain Community College, Red Mountain Community College, Paradise Valley Community College, Estrella Mountain Community College and Prescott Valley Community College. The Arizona Agribusiness & Equine Center's enrollment has grown steadily since inception. The Arizona Agribusiness & Equine Center opened with approximately 98 students and presently has for the school year (1386) students. Presently all sites are considered Title I schools. The campuses being located in strategic locations in the South, West, East, North valley and in Northern Arizona (Yavapai County) have their own cultures and demographic diversity. AAEC has found that regardless of the demographics and where the campuses reside the AAEC model works and is successful. AAEC has been successful at closing the achievement gap. Regardless of where the campus is located, regardless of the socio-economical surroundings, regardless of demographic makeup of the campuses the students consistently perform well academically. AAEC has noted that regardless of campus location the students successfully on average complete 46 transferable community college credits. The Arizona Agribusiness & Equine Center's program of study is described by the Arizona Agribusiness & Equine Center as "college preparatory with an agribusiness and science emphasis". The Arizona Agribusiness & Equine Center reviews and updates its curriculum annually to achieve its curricular objectives with standards updates from national, state, college, technology, and industry resources. The Arizona Agribusiness & Equine Center's instructional methodology generally emphasizes providing students with innovative, academically challenging curriculum. Page 2

System's Purpose Provide the school system's purpose statement and ancillary content such as mission, vision, values, and/or beliefs. Describe how the school system embodies its purpose through its program offerings and expectations for students. Educational Philosophy In order to achieve its mission, AAEC strives to help students identify their interests and passions, and explore how they can be used to discover and select career and real life work choices. Its faculty focuses instruction on student interests and academic and social needs. Students' interests and passions are nested in a rigorous core curriculum of English, mathematics, science, history and foreign language. Each of AAEC's campuses is an intimate community of caring adults and engaged students working in small groups allowing for personalized guidance and direction. AAEC pledges to provide all students with what they need to succeed: - A superior academic program that meets students where they are academically and socially, and prepares them for college; - Advanced coursework; - Comprehensive student support services; - Small classes and an intimate high school environment; and - An authentic college experience that allows students to enroll in college classes and participate fully in the life of the post-secondary partner. Curriculum and Special Emphases AAEC's program of study is designed as "college preparatory with an agribusiness and science emphasis." AAEC reviews and updates its curriculum annually to achieve its curricular objectives with standards updates from national, state, college, technology, and industry resources. AAEC's instructional methodology generally emphasizes providing students with innovative, academically challenging curriculum. Specific aspects of the curriculum include: - A reading program which emphasizes literature appreciation, immersion reading and higher order questioning; - A writing program which emphasizes context-bound instructional development in the areas of writing organization, mastery of writing conventions, personal voice development, development of ideas and content, improvement of sentence fluency, and accurate and expressive word choice; - A math and science program which emphasizes regular and challenging hands-on experimentation, and real-life application, including genetic engineering, plant tissue culture, biotech application, and advanced plant and animal physiology; - A developing technology program which emphasizes everyday accessibility and use of technology integration in everyday instruction, and the use of technology for research, writing, reporting, academic practice, enrichment, illustration, construction, graphing, and communication; - A social studies curriculum which emphasizes interest and knowledge of self, community, history, geography, government, citizenship and the law for the larger purpose of establishing a knowledgeable and participatory citizenry; and - An equine science program which emphasizes the latest research and technological advancements to develop skills for production, selection, breeding, and training of horses; - A veterinary technology program which emphasizes animal physiology, anatomy, disease assessment and treatment, medical techniques and procedures, and office management; and Page 4

- Participation in school-to-work career initiatives, occupational education, and state and national field experiences. Community College Emphasis AAEC's enrolled students also attend classes at the adjacent community colleges at no cost to students. AAEC's management uses a portion of the state per-pupil funding it receives to pay the community college tuition for its students. By graduation, the majority of AAEC's graduating students have, on average, 46 transferable college credits which is equivalent to two years' college credit. Most classes for 9th and 10th graders are at the charter school while all 11th and 12th grade students attend many classes at the community colleges. Page 5
