2 ADMINISTRATIVE SUPPORT SPECIALIST LEGAL STUDIES DIPLOMA Program Overview The Administrative Support Specialist Legal Studies Diploma program prepares students academically to seek entry-level employment in legal office environments. The student will learn, engage in, and practice general office skills for employment in a variety of legal office positions; such as, legal secretary, legal clerk, legal research clerk, administrative assistant, and office clerk.
3 ADMINISTRATIVE SUPPORT SPECIALIST LEGAL STUDIES DIPLOMA 650 CLOCK HOURS 49 CREDITS Program Outline SS1001 Administrative Assistant Procedures 3 LA1001 Business Law 3 EN1001 Communications (Business English) 3 GE1051 Composition 3 FS1001 Freshman Seminar 1 IB1001 Introduction to Business 3 GE1007 Introduction to College Mathematics 4 CA1001 Introduction to Computer Concepts 3 LS1051 Introduction to the Legal Environment 3 JO2001 Job Orientation 3 LS2002 Keyboarding for the Legal Student 3 LS1052 Legal Forms and Records 3 LS1001 Legal Terminology 3 CA1055 Office Automation 2 TY1001 Typewriting/Keyboarding I (Theory) 3 TY1051 Typewriting/Keyboarding II 3 CA1007 Word Processing I 3 Code Explanation: The alpha prefixes indicate the course being taught. The numbering system indicates the level of the course, as follows: 1000 series are beginning classes; 1050 series are intermediate classes; and 2000 series are advanced classes. Certain intermediate classes may be prerequisites for beginning classes.
4 Course Descriptions SS1001 ADMINISTRATIVE ASSISTANT PROCEDURES The student is trained for duties that pertain to the administrative assistant. An analysis is made of the broad scope of work, and the student is made aware of the many details in which an administrative assistant must qualify--opening and sorting mail, receiving callers, making appointments, obtaining and organizing facts, using reference materials, preparing reports, prioritizing work, maintaining equipment, making travel arrangements, and handling tasks associated with office meetings and conferences. Personal characteristics such as attitude and appearance are also addressed. LA1001 BUSINESS LAW Fundamentals of commercial and business law are presented. Topics for study include the nature and substance of the law and the creation, classification, operation, and discharge of contracts. Students are given a basic understanding of terms and theories connected with the law. EN1001 COMMUNICATIONS (Business English) This basic English class concentrates on developing the ability to communicate effectively and correctly. Emphasis is placed on grammar, sentence structure, spelling, and punctuation. GE1051 COMPOSITION Prerequisite: See Page 17, Entrance Evaluation Policy This class integrates writing instruction with reading and editing skills. Students learn to write concisely in direct response to assigned readings. FS1001 FRESHMAN SEMINAR Take in first quarter This course presents a variety of college survival skills. Students will be introduced to topics such as personal finances, study habits, and support networks, as well as, note-taking and test-taking strategies IB1001 INTRODUCTION to BUSINESS This course gives the student insight into the characteristics, organization, and operation of a business. Included in this class is an overview of business and society, business ownership, organization and management, marketing, management of human resources, and business laws. Real-life situations are presented as well as biographical sketches, ethical issues, and case problems. GE1007 INTRODUCTION to COLLEGE MATHEMATICS Prerequisite: See Page 17, Entrance Evaluation Policy A realistic comprehensive approach to math as it relates to business and economics. Students will learn everyday business situations that need mathematical computations with emphasis on basic mathematical calculations such as mean, median, mode; ratios and proportions, perimeter, circumference, area, and volume; and basic algebraic problem solving. CA1001 INTRODUCTION to COMPUTER CONCEPTS This hands-on computer course requires students to work through a series of tutorials based on the Microsoft Office Suite. It culminates in an opportunity for the ICDL (International Computer Driver s License) certification.
5 LS1051 INTRODUCTION TO THE LEGAL ENVIRONMENT Prerequisites: LS1001, LA1001 This course introduces the student to the theories of the United States legal system. It is designed to teach students the procedures used in a law office or other legal environment and have them learn the applications of legal principles encountered by the legal assistant. It studies the law as it pertains to preparing for civil and criminal court proceedings. JO2001 JOB ORIENTATION Take in last quarter The student will focus on effective job-search skills. Specifically, the course covers job-search methods, researching jobs, networking, using the telephone, interviewing, resume preparation, cover letters and follow-up letters, effective time-management strategies, and personal characteristics (dress, attitude). Each student is required to prepare a portfolio. LS2002 KEYBOARDING FOR THE LEGAL STUDENT Prerequisite: TY1051 Emphasis is placed on correct keyboarding skills while exercises in proofreading, formatting, composition, and word processing solidify skills needed to succeed in the world of business. Speed tests will be part of this course, and a student must achieve a speed of 55 net words per minute. LS1052 LEGAL FORMS AND RECORDS Prerequisites: LS1051, TY1051, CA1007 Students will gain practical experience in preparing legal documents selected from actual cases, reviewing general information about the tasks assigned following established legal procedures, and learning the job responsibilities of a legal secretary. LS1001 LEGAL TERMINOLOGY This class provides students with a basic understanding of legal terms and provides them with the knowledge necessary for success as a non-lawyer employee in the legal field. With a basic understanding of legal vocabulary, the students will be prepared to follow legal procedures and practices and be a more effective contributor to the legal profession. CA1055 OFFICE AUTOMATION Prerequisites: SS1001, TY1001 This course covers a variety of business and office automation needs. Students will learn the principles of office organization, telephone techniques, equipment and supplies, handling meetings, mail procedures, and travel. Familiarity with a variety of office technologies, such as fax machines, copiers, and postage machines will be developed, as well as, accurate usage of transcription machines and the 10-key calculator. TY1001 TYPEWRITING/KEYBOARDING I (Theory) The goal of this course is the acquisition of correct technique that will provide a sound foundation for the later development of speed and accuracy. The student will be introduced to simple business letters, memos, and report formats. The student will begin to develop proofreading skills. Speed tests will be part of this course, and a student must strive to achieve a speed of 35 net words per minute. TY1051 TYPEWRITING/KEYBOARDING II Prerequisite: TY1001 This is a continuation of the training offered in Typewriting/ Keyboarding I. Attention is centered on applying the technical knowledge to various letter styles, office forms, and manuscript preparation. Speed tests will be part of this course, and a student must strive to achieve a speed of 45 net words per minute.
6 CA1007 WORD PROCESSING I Prerequisite: CA1001 Students will use a Windows-based word processing package to learn such features as inserting, deleting, and formatting text, document storage, retrieval and printing, merging, multi-page documents, columns, graphics, and tables.
