From the file marked Laws
Family Policy -A high school lesson plan Pretest Brainstorm policies that might exist in a mutually supportive environment for positive teen sexuality Readings and research on current state laws in the United States Cooperative Learning Groups reflect on the purpose of current laws, consequences, and possible changes Report to the whole group Determine the answers to the pretest
Laws Regarding Sexuality Pretest 1. If a woman is married and pregnant, her husband must give permission in order for her to obtain an abortion. 2. A 14 year old cannot receive treatment for a sexually transmitted disease unless his/her parent(s) are informed. 3. Funding is available through the state for lowincome women to help with whichever pregnancy option the woman chooses. 4. A female minor can get a prescription for birth control without her parents knowledge.
Pre test continued 5. If an 18 year old female had sex with a 13 year old male, his parents may charge her with statutory rape. 6. When a couple is married, one can force sex on the other at any time. 7. No one can be forced to get married; both parties must consent. 8. To assist/aid people who cannot afford birth control, funding for reproductive health care is available from state and Federal sources. 9. When a guy discovers that his girlfriend is pregnant, he can avoid financial responsibility by moving to another state.
Mutually Supportive Policies positive teen sexuality Comprehensive sex ed mandated MS & HS Ticket people who do not have a condom No sex until after high school Age of consent should go both ways Teens must be tested before any sexual activity Cancel support for abstinence only programs Regulate age of consent across the US No age requirement to buy condoms
Resources on laws regarding sexuality State Policies in Brief: Minors' Access to Contraceptive Services Statutory Rape: The Age of Consent Legal age of consent Female Sexuality issues for teens in the states
Cooperative learning groups What should the law be with regard to: access to education? patient confidentiality? birth control for minors? minimum age for STD diagnosis and treatment? Who has rights to choose pregnancy outcomes? State funding for abortions requested by lowincome females? Father s rights and responsibilities in adoption decisions?
After reading the current law: Do you agree with the current law? In your opinion, what is the major goal or purpose of this law? Describe your concerns or objections to this law. List at least 3 consequences of the law: Who is affected? Is the consequence positive or negative? If you had the power, would you eliminate or change this law? Why? How? Who might benefit?
Reports from groups access to education? No problem with OR comprehensive sex ed requirement law. Would HS students in other states (like Texas or Florida) say the same? birth control for minors? There should be an age restriction minimum age for STD diagnosis and treatment? There should be none but who will pay for this? Who has rights to choose pregnancy outcomes? Anyone but it must be an informed decision (like in this class) State funding for abortions requested by low-income females? Tax payers have to pay even if it violates their values Father s rights and responsibilities in adoption decisions? Must consider in detail the financial support of the child
