The principles of nursing management, leadership, and research are applied in this special environment of the health care profession. Prerequisite: limited to students admitted to the MSN program. Required Materials for Online Participation: Roussel, L.. (2013). Management and Leadership for Nurse Administrators. (6th ed.) Boston: Jones and Bartlett, Publishers. ISBN American Psychological Association. (2006). Publication manual of the American Psychological Association (6 th ed.). Washington, DC: Author. ISBN Student Learner Outcomes: The student will accomplish the following 1 through 5 student learning outcomes with the measurement criteria listed below, to be successful in this course. 1. Write one formal research paper in an APA style on a topic in health care nursing management. 2. Write two formal critiques of peer reviewed articles identifying each type of article and including an in depth analysis of each article in relationship to nurse administration problems. 3. Devise a formal plan (via a paper) with an in depth
2 evaluation analysis and synthesis of the managerial dilemma s within the nursing administration field. Pick at least 2 dilemma s and they may be related Evaluate evidence-based practice concepts in relationship to nursing administration and leadership standards. Do this through a written 5 page paper (APA style), which you will Place on discussion board for your colleagues to discuss and make suggestions and comments as to what you have written. 5. Successfully complete two online exams as 80% or higher. Measurement: The students must accomplish 95% of all activities at a B (80%) or higher grade on each item within the syllabus, which includes but is not limited to, research paper, tests, critiques, discussion board and any other items which the faculty feel need to be accomplished. The faculty reserves the right to make changes during this course in order to facilitate learning and accomplishment of the student learning activities. Also you may assignments ahead of time but if they do not come in on time, there will be a 4 point penalty for every day it is late. Means of Evaluation 1. Discussion Board - Students will reflect, analyze and synthesize the topics offered on discussion board put there by faculty and post at least 5 (one every other week) researched peer reviewed articles for discussion They will send the completed paper to the instructor of the course and place in assignment drop box. 2. Managerial Leadership Paper guidelines will follow APA guidelines and be developed as follows: Select a topic that you are researching related to nursing management/leadership (try to include evidence based practice concepts) and then follow the guidelines for your paper. In the process of researching and analyzing, you need to address each of the following areas. Carefully include an evaluation, analysis and synthesis within the paper plus include at least two paragraphs in the summary of your paper regarding evidence based practice. This paper will be 20 pages in length including all of the areas listed below Cover Sheet Abstract (250 words or less) Introduction and purpose Historical antecedents to topic Theoretical components to topic Organizational structure and analysis of topic Strategic planning Tools for operations and health care delivery Evaluation and implementation quality management Financial and budgeting format (if applicable) Summary including evidence based practice for the Administrator APA style Body of the paper - a maximum of pages Reference pages 3. Critique of Managerial/leadership two separate articles Critiques (2) Select two different peer reviewed managerial leadership research articles. Write a seven to ten page paper for each critique. Conduct a thorough analysis and synthesis of the articles. Include statements in the summary regarding the application to evidence-based practice. Choose articles based on your managerial interest and expertise. These
5 critiques are to be written in APA style. Include a cover sheet, abstract and reference page. Then place the critique in the assignment drop box to your faculty person via Blackboard. Write a seven to ten pages for each critique including the following. Cover page Abstract Statement of the Phenomenon of Interest Purpose addressed within the article Analysis and synthesis of the article topic Applications to evidence based practice to nurse managers/leaders & executives. Conclusions and Recommendations End Summary proposed application to evidence based practice. 5 Course Evaluation: Managerial /Leadership Research Paper submit online 40% Discussion board assignments 20% Managerial/ Leadership 2 Article Critique Papers 20% One exam 20% 100% Grading Scale A = B = C = D = F = 59 or below
6 Participation Policy (a) Students are to be prepared with addressing the discussion board topics. This preparedness will include an analysis and synthesis of the topics presented and scholarly inquiry aimed at addressing each area of the discussion. Online assignments will be presented and discussion board topics will be presented for class input. Students are expected to complete the assignments. Specific instructions for completing each assignment will be included within each module. (b) Students are to be responsible for their own work and when interacting online must not make any untoward comments such as profane words, personal attacks on your colleagues or any type of offensive materials that would be considered as inappropriate for a graduate online level course. (c) Discussion Board Standards: The student will be on the discussion board a minimum of 3 times per week or more, as needed, since this course is only five weeks you are expected to participating the minimum amount each week. Discussion board content must be complete with thorough analysis and synthesis of materials presented for discussion. This account will be used to deliver official university correspondence. Faculty and students are required to utilize the university account when communicating about coursework. Drop Policy: To drop this course after the census date (see semester calendar), a student must complete the Drop/Withdrawal Request Form, located on the University website or obtained in the Registrar s Office. The student must submit the signed and completed form to the instructor of each course indicated on the form to be
7 dropped for his/her signature. The signature is not an approval to drop, but rather confirmation that the student has discussed the drop/withdrawal with the faculty member. The form must be submitted to the Registrar s office for processing in person, Registrar@tamut.edu, mail (7101 University Ave., Texarkana, TX 75503) or fax ( ). Drop/withdraw forms missing any of the required information will not be accepted by the Registrar s Office for processing. It is the student s responsibility to ensure that the form is completed properly before submission. If a student stops participating in class (attending and submitting assignments) but does not complete and submit the drop/withdrawal form, a final grade based on work completed as outlined in the syllabus will be assigned. Class Participation: Students are responsible for beginning their participation on the FIRST CLASS DAY by logging on and completing assignments according to the COURSE CALENDAR. Failure to submit online assignments between the first day of classes and the University census date (according to the University schedule) will result in an ADMINISTRATIVE DROP from the course.
