2 Good Deeds Day Activities for Others Good Deeds Day is one day each year dedicated to performing good deeds. All over the world, hundreds of thousands choose to volunteer and help others, putting into practice the simple idea that every single person can do something good, be it large or small, to improve the lives of others and positively impact the world. Initiated in 2007 by businesswoman and philanthropist Shari Arison, Good Deeds Day is organized by Ruach Tova (NGO), under the auspices of The Ted Arison Family Foundation. This annual tradition of good has since gained greater popularity, spreading beyond geographical boundaries to include hundreds of thousands of participants in some 50 countries around the globe. In this brochure, we offer a myriad of ideas for doing good that have proven to be impactful and fun. Projects are arranged by the following activity themes: People, Environment, Community, and Youth. Good Deeds Day offers a chance to promote community involvement through activities that help the needy, people with special needs, the elderly and the sick. Bazaar Empowering People with Special Needs Raise awareness of the need to integrate people with special needs into society, by setting up a bazaar, or market, with booths that sell products made at occupational centers. Food Baskets for the Needy Provide food baskets for the needy in your community, by collecting non-perishable food items and assembling them with the help of volunteers. Second Hand Market Benefitting People in Need Donate the profits of a second-hand market you organized, to a particular group of people in need, such as battered women, youth at risk, people with mental handicaps, or the elderly. Blood Donation Encourage people to save lives by donating blood, and/or signing up to become organ donors. Healing Moments at the Hospital Spend quality time with someone ill or hospitalized, by playing a game together, immersing in an arts and crafts activity, talking, or organizing a little show for them.
3 Activities for the Environment Good Deeds Day is a wonderful opportunity to care for the environment and your surroundings. Recycling Electronic Waste Encourage recycling of electronic waste, by setting up an e-waste drop off station at a central location in your community, for discarding devices such as: cell phones, computers, monitors, televisions, printers, etc. Materials found in electronic devices are extremely hazardous, containing lead, mercury, arsenic and cadmium. Take it a step further, and organize an arts and crafts station, using other recycled materials. Adopt a Park Beautify a nature reserve or park, by marking trails and clearing weeds. Hold a cleanup competition for the volunteers with a small prize for the winners. Take it to the next level, and plant a community garden that is regularly watered, weeded and pruned according to a community plan. Swap Market Create a social event based on market exchange, to encourage environmentally friendly consumerism. In a swap market, you give away products no longer useful to you, in exchange for products free of charge (or at a nominal fee). Spruce Up Your Neighborhood Improve the look of your neighborhood, by picking up trash, painting murals, planting flowers, building a bench or swing, and continue to maintain your shared environment throughout the year.
4 Activities for the Community Activities for Youth On Good Deeds Day, communities have the opportunity to make a difference together, and strengthen connections through a wide range of activities. Community Picnic Organizing a public picnic in a community center, park or blocked off street. Invite your community members to bring a homemade dish to share, and get to know each other. Transcend Social Boundaries Organize a joint activity, such as a sports game between two schools, to bridge between cultures, ages, religions, and other different backgrounds. Bond between Young and Old Spend time together with the elderly, honoring and getting to know each other, by performing for senior citizens, watching a movie, creating an arts and craft projects, discussing the generation gap, solving a large jigsaw puzzle, etc. Story Hour at the Library Hold a story hour at local libraries or alternative sites, to encourage reading or raise awareness of a particular issue through a story. Volunteer Fair Expose your community to the variety of volunteer opportunities, by sharing information through a volunteer fair, organized with reps from local organizations. Good Deeds Day is a wonderful way to engage children and the young generation in doing good. Gift Packages and Get Well Cards Make gift packages and create get-well cards for children and adults who are hospitalized. The youth can help distribute these at local hospitals. Collection Drives for the Needy Set up a clothes or food drive for the needy, inviting high school students to deliver and distribute. Offer the local school the opportunity to sponsor it, by providing the transportation, advertising and/or encouraging teachers to take part. Swap Market Involve youth and children in recycling by organizing a social event based on market exchange. In a swap market, you give away products no longer useful to you, in exchange for products free of charge (or at a nominal fee). Bond between Young and Old Inspire youth and children to connect with the elderly, by spending time together, performing for senior citizens, watching a movie, creating an arts and craft projects, discussing the generation gap, solving a large jigsaw puzzle, etc. Good Deeds Day Festival Empower students to play an active role in positively impacting their community, by asking them to identifying a community need and create a plan to solve it.
