1 Thursday, 18 February 2016 Dear Parents/Caregivers I enjoyed catching up with lots of families last Friday evening at the school picnic and hope you did too! We were certainly fortunate with the weather that night. Trust you found Meet the Teacher evening last week informative. Strong home school partnerships are important to us as consistent messages for children can only be of benefit for them. Thank you to all those who attended. We will be providing an opportunity for parent interviews on Thursday 3 March between 2pm and 8.30pm. We encourage you to attend. Please visit interviews.co.nz and enter code xjeta to book an appointment time with your child s teacher and specialist teachers as well (Mrs Clark, Mrs Dean, Mrs Coutts, Mr Ramsay) if you wish. Parent interviews for rooms 2 and 3 will take place on 14 March instead. Please note that on this day school closes at 2pm. If it is really difficult for you to pick your child up at 2pm, he/she can be sent to the library till 3pm where I will look after them on that day. After school care operates as normal from 3pm. LEADERSHIP DAY Last Thursday Mr David Hansen who is an ex-parent and ex-board chairperson and normally works with corporate companies, once again gave up a day to work with our year 6 students. His expertise helped children identify their own leadership style and they were given opportunities to reflect on how to be a great leader. 2 WALKING SCHOOL BUS A reminder that as part of walking school bus week any students are invited to join the bus that is leaving the countdown carpark tomorrow morning, Friday 19 at 8.25am with parent Sally Logan. All welcome! If you live on Jutland Road you can join in! PLAYGROUNDS Thank you for co-operating with the no play rule on any of the playgrounds after school. We do appreciate it. There are several reasons for this including teachers in classrooms who are working or having meetings, road patrols waiting for children up at the crossing, and no teacher supervision after school. BEHAVIOUR MANAGEMENT/DEVICE AGREEMENTS These agreements have been sent home with all children. Please make sure these have come back to school. We require a 100% return. PERCEPTUAL MOTOR PROGRAMME The Perceptual Motor Programme (PMP) at Hauraki School is a language based developmental programme catering for the needs of year 1 children and it is also a remedial programme for selected year 2 children. This programme develops areas of motor skills like fitness, balance, eye/foot coordination, locomotion, eye/hand coordination, as well as perceptions like body image and control, rhythm, directionality, space awareness and laterality. Some of the skills being developed are problem solving, language, confidence, memory, P.E. skills, and social skills. It develops through movement, motor skills that are related to the child's own needs, in the areas of eye/hand, eye/foot coordination, locomotion and balance and fitness (including stamina, flexibility, and strength). We are always grateful to parents, grandparents and friends of the school who offer to assist with the implementation of this programme that is ably led by our teacher aides. If you can assist for an hour or two on any day between Monday and Thursday please do let us know, it would be much appreciated. READING EGGS We are offering individual subscriptions to the Reading Eggs programme again this year. This is an individualised reading programme that children complete online. When they first begin they carry out a short assessment and then the programme tailors itself to the appropriate level for your child. This will not be part of the school programme. It is something you would use at home with your child if you wish. Through school the price would be $33 for a one year licence. It is dependent on the number of people subscribing. The school does not receive any money for this programme. 3 SCHOOL MUSICAL SHOW All year 5 and 6 students are to be part of a musical show The Button Box to be performed in the week beginning 27 June. It will be really important that all children are at school during that week so am letting you know well in advance. SWIMMING SPORTS A reminder that you are all invited to the Junior and Middle School Swimming Sports next Thursday 25 February in the school pool. Year 2 swimming sports (room 6, 7, 8) are from 1-2pm and the year 1 swimming sports (rooms 2,3,4,5) are from 2-3pm. The Senior Swimming Sports are the following week on Friday 4 March 9.30am (please note this date has changed) at the Navy Pool in Devonport. You must have registered your name with deputy principal, Mr Christopher Pipes if you intend going to these sports due to navy requirements. SAUSAGE SIZZLE Please note that the dates for this term s sausage sizzles are Friday 11 March and Friday 1 April. SCHOOL CAMP Education outside the classroom is an important part of learning for our year 6 students this week as they have spent four days at Camp Adair, in the Hunuas. Apart from living away from home (and for some this is a first), and taking responsibility for themselves, each day they have been exposed to a range of new experiences, some of which are depicted below. Special thanks to Mr Christopher Pipes for organising this successful event so well, and for the amount of time and energy he and also teachers, Donna Golightly and Kristy Graveson invested to ensure this was a safe and rewarding experience for all. Thank you, too to all the wonderful parents who stayed the week or came for a day.

4 ROAD PATROL We are desperately in need of parent helpers for after school road patrol. If you are able to help on any day please contact Mr Pipes on or the school office. IMPORTANT NOTICE Please be aware that the walkway between Marsden Street and the school grounds will be closed to the public for the next few days while a wasps nest is being cleared by the council. This is for everyones safety, so please talk to your children about this. Thank you. PTA NEWS A reminder that the PTA AGM is Tuesday 8 March 7.30pm in the school staffroom.
