1 Using Panopto in Blackboard Panopto is a service that allows you to link video and audio ( podcasts ) recordings to your Blackboard courses. You can also record lectures as well ( lecture capture ). Panopto also supports live streaming of events. Panopto videos are stored in the cloud (online) and are associated with your Blackboard course. Making the Panopto Tool Link Active in your Course: Login to your Blackboard course and take a look at the menu on the left hand side above the Control Panel. If you don t see Panopto listed on the left hand side, you will need to make this tool active. Choose the + sign at the top left of the menu and choose Tool Link from the drop down menu. You will need to give the link a name (e.g. Panopto). In the Type box, select and choose Panopto Course Tool Application as shown below. Then click Submit. (Important note: Making this link available to students by clicking in the Available to Users check box is your choice. Doing so will enable them to subscribe to get automatic downloads of recordings. Students only have view privileges they cannot make changes to your folders. If you want students to view videos only, don t make this link available. You will create links to videos in a content area for them to view videos.) Center for Teaching and Learning, Fall

2 Note that you can also get to Panopto through the Tools Link: Create a course folder: Recordings are associated with your Blackboard course. The first step is to create this course folder (called provisioning your course). Click on the Panopto Tool Link (see above) and choose Configure. You ll get a confirmation screen, then click OK. Next, download the recorder: Center for Teaching and Learning, Fall

3 Select the link as shown above and then select Mac or Windows as appropriate. Once it downloads, you will need to install it. Open the Recorder App (it will be in your Applications folder on your Mac), click the Login button and type in the server name as shown below: su.hosted.panopto.com. From the drop- down menu, choose Blackboard Production Server. It will ask you to enter your Blackboard login and password. To capture a lecture: Click the Create New Recording Button at the top of the screen and choose the folder (your course folder) to save the recording to. (Note that you may need to change the settings as shown below depending on whether you are using your own computer or working from a classroom podium computer.) 4 If you don t do this, it will be saved to your computer and you will need to upload the recording later as shown below. Another way to upload an existing video: Launch the Recorder app and Click on Manage Online Recordings. Center for Teaching and Learning, Fall

5 Once in Panopto, click the Create Button and choose Upload Video: Be sure to choose the right folder to save it to. Note that it takes a little time for Panopto to process recordings. To insert a video into a Blackboard content area: From a content area, choose Tools - > Panopto Video Link. (Hint: choose Tools from the horizontal menu bar as shown below, not the Tools link on the left menu bar.) Center for Teaching and Learning, Fall

6 On the next screen you will select the folder and video and give it a title. Then click OK. Subscribing for Automatic Downloads: Students can subscribe to get recordings downloaded automatically by subscribing to a RSS (really simple syndication) feed when they are in Panopto: management/podcasting- and- rss- feeds- 0 More help is available at: management/adding- your- rss- feed- itunesu- 0 Allowing Student to Upload Videos Faculty must first create a drop box for their Blackboard Course Folder. A drop box is a folder associated with your course that allows users of your Blackboard course to login and create and upload their own videos. Note that they cannot see other s content, nor can they edit or delete your content. For details see: management/drop- box- student- recordings- 0 Login to your Blackboard course, click the Panopto link. (You will need to add this tool link if you don t have it already.) 7 Go the Settings of your Course Folder, then click Share. Add each of your students names to the folder by typing in their name or address in the Add People section. (You can also paste in their addresses, separated by commas.) Under the Overview tab, click Create Drop Box. Center for Teaching and Learning, Fall

8 Students upload videos by logging in to your Blackboard course. They choose the Panopto link from the left hand menu (so you must make this visible), and then choose Upload Video from the Create menu. Best Practices: Get in the habit of naming recordings in such a way that you will be able to find things later. One convention is to use your course name, section, term, instructor name, and lecture number in the filename. Example: FYS Fall14.Marchant.12 You will want to create a separate folder with your name in it to create a copy of your recordings that is not associated with your course for safekeeping.
