Do you have the kind of mind that wants to solve a mystery, to understand why people do what they do? If the answers is 'yes', then this course may be for you. The course allows you to understand the modern forensic techniques used in solving crime and understand criminal behaviour. Using a combination of hands on experience and classroom based learning you will be introduced to the fascinating field of forensic investigation. Location: Start date: Entry requirements 120 UCAS points from AS and A-Levels (at least 80 points must be at A2-level, preferably in a science subject) or relevant level 3 qualification i.e. BTEC National Diploma/BTEC Extended Diploma - PPP Grades required, specific unit grades may be required. Access to HE Diplomas - 45 credits at level 3. Plus GCSEs at grade C or above in English language, mathematics and a science: alternatives at Level 2 may be considered. Course length: Mature applicants with relevant experience but without the stated qualifications will be considered individually and are encouraged to apply. This programme looks at a variety of topics including law, psychology, biology and maths. Once you are familiar with the different theories, you will then be able to put into practice what you have learnt. There are two pathways on offer: Psychology and Incident Investigation. This means that you can focus on the area of forensic science that most interests you. You will be based in the science department at the Camborne campus where you will benefit

2 from experienced full-time staff and very well equipped laboratories. You will be part of a large and vibrant community, but with the benefit of intimate class sizes to ensure an encouraging and productive learning atmosphere. Overall, you will be assessed mainly though coursework and assignments. The assignments will be scenario based and the work you carry out will be largely investigative. However you will also have to sit exams, participate in group work and presentations, and also write reports based on your lab and practical work. The programme is delivered over roughly three consecutive days per week, enabling you to work part-time, or participate in the social activities available on and off campus, around your study time. This foundation degree equips you with a range of essential skills which support a variety of careers within or outside of the science sector. As well as providing a valuable platform for further study, this foundation degree also provides a route into employment sectors such as crime scene investigation, forensic science laboratory technician, research analyst, law enforcement, the education sector and working with young offenders. Facilities Due to the investigative nature of the course there are some superb learning facilities on offer including a crime scene suite set up with different scenes. This is the basis of your learning; with real evidence placed in the scene, the basis of your assignments will be rooted in theory, but carried out practically, as a real crime scene investigator would do. This means the knowledge and theory that you will learn in the class room will then be put into practice in the crime scene suite. You will have to follow protocol, collect and analyse evidence and then compile a credible report of the work you have done. In this way the learning that you do is a realistic insight into what forensic science is all about. Trips The confidential nature of this subject means there is a limited number of possibilities for excursions; although there have been trips to court included in the course programme. However, there are a variety of visiting academic workshops on offer; Forensic Anthropologist and Social Reconstruction. These help you to further your understanding of the forensic field through a different learning environment. Modules Year 1 CORE MODULES Forensic Science (20 credits) Forensic Science is a fast-moving scientific field that has gained a lot of publicity in recent years. This module provides you with the fundamental knowledge to understand modern forensic science techniques and their application to criminal investigations. Quantitative Methods (20 credits) Many modern scientific and psychological techniques are based on the analysis of numerical data. Making sense of the data can be a difficult matter. This module has been designed to develop your mathematical and statistical skills, and allow you to apply these techniques in a relevant practical context. Crime Scene Investigation and Management (20 credits) The examination of a crime scene is one of the most important aspects of any criminal investigation. This module provides you with the fundamental knowledge and understanding of the issues involved in an investigation. It also involves understanding the management of crime scenes and how those processes relate to the criminal justice system. The module includes a number of simulated crime scenes and their investigation. Forensic Biology (20 credits) This module introduces you to the structure and function of cells and of important biological molecules in the human body. You will be introduced to the anatomy and physiology of some body systems, with an overview of the role of forensic pathology in assisting criminal investigations. Personal & Employability Skills Development (20 credits) This module will help you to develop both conceptual and practical skills in personal development planning for study at degree level and readiness for employability. It is designed to equip you with baseline personal resources for study and employment such as integrity, personal responsibility, reliability and self-motivation. You will develop skills in team working, decisionmaking, problem solving and communication.

4 OPTIONAL MODULES (choose one) Introduction to Forensic Psychology: Theory & Practice 1 (20 credits) Introducing the theory and practice of the forensic psychologist and providing an insight into their role in the legal process. The importance of emotions, motivation and the psychological construction of identity will be examined. The module will include psychological explanations for offending behaviour, such as personality theories and the criminogenic factors of childhood and adulthood development. Forensic Data Capture & Recovery (20 credits) In this module you will investigate how digital media can be used to take technically sound images that adequately record a crime scene in a way that can withstand challenge in court. You will also learn how the data on media found at the crime scene may be transmitted, identified and made safe Year 2 CORE MODULES Psychology in the Courtroom (20 credits) This is a comprehensive introduction to a range of issues concerning forensic psychology in the courtroom. The module will provide an understanding of how psychological theories are applied to the witness, victim, juror and defendant as they interact with the legal system. Research Design & Methods (20 credits) This module develops your knowledge, understanding and skills in research methodology, experiment design and statistical analysis. It introduces further methods of statistical inference including an introduction to multivariate methods. Law for Forensic Scientist (20 credits) An introduction to the institutions and personnel of the English legal system and those principles of English law most relevant to the forensic scientist in their role as an expert witness. Analytical Chemistry & Instrumentation for Forensic Science (20 credits) Modern techniques in chemistry increasingly use instruments and automation. This module is an introduction to the principles and practice of chemical analysis based around the development of laboratory skills and accurate factual reporting. The module includes the hands-on use of a number of commonly used analytical and instrument techniques, such as gas-liquid chromatography, high performance liquid chromatography, infrared and ultraviolet spectroscopy, atomic absorption spectroscopy etc. OPTIONAL MODULES (choose one) Criminal Psychology (20 credits) This module examines theoretical explanations for criminal behaviour and the collation of crime data. It will also examine types of crime using a case study approach and psychological explanations for violent serious crime. The psychology of prison and recidivism will also be included. Forensic Psychology: Theory and Practice 2 (20 credits) (20 credits) Continuing the focus on the theory and practice of the forensic psychologist this module provides an insight into their role in the legal process. The psychology of offending, including individual differences, will be explored and factors of adulthood development examined in the construction of psychological explanations for offending behaviour. Crime Investigation Protocols & Procedures (20 credits) This module will provide you with an understanding of the fundamentals of criminal investigation and the moral and legal issues involve. It covers the skills and attributes required of a modern criminal investigator and examines the techniques of interviewing and the models that underpin the process. Modern aids to investigation, such as methods of determining the

5 truth, are also examined. Forensic Fire Incident Investigation (20 credits) This module looks at the causation of fires and how suspect fires are investigated. The module provides you with the underpinning science required to understand the issues involved with laboratory sessions; to give practical experience in the area. The investigation of fires is also covered; including the protocols for photographing and collecting evidence at the scene.
