7 Measure taken by Indian Railway for improving Energy efficiency : Adoption of 3-phase propulsion system for Electric and diesel locomotive and AC Electric Multiple Units(EMU). 3-phase locomotives saves 15-18% Energy 3-phase EMU saves 35-40% Energy Adoption of Static converter (Efficiency 93%) in place of Rotary converter (Induction generator) (Efficiency 83%) for Auxiliary panel supply. Installation of Power factor correction equipments at Traction Substation Substation. Banning use of Incandescent lamps and use of only CFL & T5 fluorescent lamps.

8 Measure taken by Indian Railway for improving Energy efficiency : Energy Audit of major work centers - WORKSHOPS - TRACTION SUBSTATION - PRODUCTION UNITS - DIESEL LOCO SHEDS Use of Solar Energy for Manned Level Crossing(6500 Nos) and Road side stations(200 Nos) Use of Biodiesel for traction

10 Integrated efficiency Policy Railways, Defence and Public sector units constitute a large market segment for energy intensive products. The basis for selecting a vendor is usually only the lowest initial cost. It is recommended that the procurement process be modified based on the minimum annualized life cycle cost. A manual should be prepared establishing the methodology for annualized life cycle costing with a simple spreadsheet package to enable easy implementation. Contd..

11 Though life cycle costing seems particularly relevant for appliance purchase since appliance are often bought without consideration of operating costs, it should be used for all decision-making and alternatives should be compared in terms of expected present discounted values of life cycle cost.
