3 Redefining and Reaffirming Sorority Life at Fitchburg State University Fitchburg State National Panhellenic Conference Officer Board President...Kat Martinez Vice President...April Chagnon Treasurer...Ashley Williamson Secretary... Lynn Ekberg Recruitment Director...Lindsey Camuso Parliamentarian...Stacy Thomas The Panhellenic Creed We, as Undergraduate Members of women s fraternities, stand for good scholarship, for guarding of good health for maintenance of fine standards, and for serving, to the best of our ability, our college community. Cooperation for furthering fraternity life, in harmony with its best possibilities, is the ideal that shall guide our fraternity activities. We, as Fraternity Women, stand for service through the development of character inspired by the close contact and deep friendship of individual fraternity and Panhellenic life. The opportunity for wide and wise human service, through mutual respect and helpfulness, is the tenet by which we strive to live. What is Recruitment? Recruitment is a period of three weeks designed for undergraduate women to visit all three sororities. Throughout the different events, you will have the opportunity to speak with members about their sororities and become familiar with their values, ideals, and activities. In order to receive a bid, which is a formal invitation to become a new member of a sorority, you must attend at least one event for each sorority plus another event. This allows you to meet each organization and helps you decide which one is right for you. We encourage all of you to attend as many events as possible so that you, as well as each sorority, can make the best decision.

All new members are encouraged to attend all of the events if possible.
5 What is a Recruitment Counselor? A Recruitment Counselor (RC) is the person you will become closest to during the recruitment process. An RC is a sorority woman who is neutral to all three sororities, including her own. Her job is to help you through your recruitment period by answering questions, explaining Greek Life, and helping you with decision making. They will keep all of your questions and comments confidential. They are available for you at any time and are excited to help you through the recruitment process. These women will not only be your guides, but will also become your friends. A Recruitment Counselor can answer questions on Recruitment, Panhellenic, Greek Life, Fitchburg State, and other campus activities. She will also be a shoulder to lean on if your decisions get tough. Remember, RC s are here to help you through the recruitment process, so feel free to communicate with them throughout your recruitment period. 6 Questions Before joining a sorority, you will have a lot to think about. Each sorority is unique in its own way. Which one is right for you? How do you know? Here are examples of questions we hope will help you with your choice. Questions you should ask each sorority Why did you join a sorority? What do you like best about Greek Life? Can you tell me what costs are involved with being in a sorority? Will I be able to keep my grades up if I join a sorority? What events do you have planned for this semester/year? How long does the new member education program last? What will I have to do as a new member? As an active member? What type of sisterhood events do you typically plan during the semester? How much time do I need to dedicate to the member education program each week? How much time will I need to dedicate to the organization per week if I become a sister? Do you have a payment plan for dues if I cannot afford my dues in a one lump sum? Questions to ask yourself Why do I want to join a sorority? What are the pros and cons of each sorority? Am I able to pay for chapter dues or other expenses? Where do I feel most comfortable? Has the chapter answered all of my questions/given me enough information? Can I be in the sorority of my choice? Will I have the time to give all I want to the sorority of my choice?

Active: A fully initiated member of a sorority or fraternity. Alumna: A graduated member of a sorority. Initiation: A ceremony during which new members of NPC organizations become active, lifelong members of their organization. New Member: A person who has been accepted a bid to an NPC organization but has not been initiated yet. Potential New Member (PNM): A student who is not yet part of a Greek organization, but is interested in Greek Life.

Recruitment: Formal process where interested women can learn more about NPC organizations and be asked to join. Recruitment Counselor: An NPC sorority woman who has disassociated (temporarily removed herself from her chapter) in order to guide potential new members through formal sorority recruitment and provide unbiased assistance. Members will not talk inappropriately about other members/sororities. 5. Members will be dressed appropriately and arrive on time to all events for recruitment, meetings, and campus events. 6. Members will not and cannot promise bids. 7. Members will not take Potential New Members (PNMs) off campus or be alone with them on campus. 8. Hazing is not permitted. 9. All PNMs/Collegiates will follow and abide by all state, federal, and local laws. 10. All PNMs will follow and abide by a dry recruitment period and continue a dry pledging period if such PNM is under the legal drinking age of 21.
14 Explanation for Potential New Members (PNMs) Signing the Membership Recruitment Acceptance Binding Agreement (MRABA) The Members of the National PanHellenic Conference want every PNM to be informed about her options for joining a sorority. To be certain that each woman has this information, this script must be used immediately prior to the signing of the MRABA. The script may be used for either a two or three preference event schedule. Good evening. You have just completed some of the busiest days of your university career. Now you have the opportunity to make a decision that will broaden your University experience and introduce you to a nationwide network of friends. Please carefully consider the following points as you complete your Membership Recruitment Acceptance Binding Agreement. 1. Your options when considering your agreement are: a. You may choose NOT to complete an agreement at this time. b. You may choose to list any sorority who s Pref Party (last event) you attended and from whom you are willing to accept an invitation to membership (bid). c. You may choose to list only one preference, but you must understand that this will limit your potential to join any of the other sororities during formal recruitment should you not be placed with your only choice. 2. When you sign this acceptance agreement, you are agreeing to accept an invitation to membership to the sororities that you have listed 3. Once the acceptance agreement has been turned in to the University representative, it can not be altered or changed. Please choose carefully. 4. If you receive and invitation (bid) to membership from a group that you have listed and you choose not to accept it, you may not new member any of the sororities on campus for one calendar year. 5. If you do not receive a bid from any of the sororities that you have listed, you are eligible for continuous open recruitment (COR). You must understand that not all of the sororities will have available spots for new members and you may not receive a bid. Joining a sorority will add a new perspective to your university life. The sorority experience includes opportunities to develop leadership and living-learning skills as well as lifelong friendships and fun. We are confident that you will make the right decision tonight. If you have any questions please see any of the Recruitment Counselors or the Associate Director of Student Development/ Greek Advisor.

Once I sign this Agreement, I am bound by the National Panhellenic Conference calendar year rule.
