1 Pre-AP Geometry Area/Volume House Remodel Project 2015 You just bought a house for $130,000!!!! The floor plan is shown on the next page. You plan on remodeling the house and need to know how much it will cost. You expect to complete the following projects: Install hardwood floors in the kitchen, living room, and master bedroom. Carpet the 2 nd and 3 rd bedrooms Tile the bathroom Re-paint the kitchen, living room, and the 3 bedrooms. Install a new air conditioning unit. Continue through the pages of this project to estimate your costs. You will turn in a booklet with a title page that includes group member names and class period. You can come up with your own title. In the booklet you should include the worksheets, showing all calculations. Staple all sheets together before you turn them in. Make sure you complete all sections. INSTALLING HARDWOOD FLOORS Remember, you are installing hardwood floors in the kitchen, living room, and master bedroom. 1. Check a web-site for hardwood flooring choices. Pick hardwood flooring. In your report include the source of your flooring, the price, and the date you checked prices. 2. Determine the square footage of the 3 rooms (use the π button on your calculator and round the area of the kitchen to 2 decimal places). 3. Determine the amount that you ll need to spend on hardwood floors. Most hardwood is sold in cartons. How many cartons do you need (you cannot buy a piece of a carton) 4. You ll need to buy a little extra because the kitchen and living room aren t perfectly rectangular, and after installing the floors you ll end up with some scrap pieces of flooring. Tack on an extra 10% to the cost to be safe. Show your calculations. DO NOT JUST WRITE ANSWERS. INSTALLING TILE 1. Check a web-site for tile choices. Pick a tile. For a bathroom, you should choose either 12 ceramic tiles or 4 ceramic tiles. In your report include the source of your tile, the price, and the date you checked prices. 2. Determine the square footage of the bath. 3. Determine the amount that you ll need to spend on tile. Most tile is sold by the carton. You will have to determine how many cartons of tile you must buy. 4. You ll need to buy a little extra because you have to cut tiles to go around doors, toilets, etc., plus they sometimes break when you cut them. Tack on an extra 10% to the cost to be safe. 2 INSTALLING CARPET 1. Check a web-site for carpet choices. Pick a carpet. Carpet is priced by the square foot, but you have to buy enough linear feet to cover the room. Carpet is generally 12 feet wide which should be wide enough for the 2 bedrooms. Therefore, you need to figure out how many linear feet of the carpet roll you need to complete the length of the room. 2. Determine how many linear feet of carpet you need. Now convert this to square feet (remember it is 12 feet wide). 3. Determine the amount that you ll need to spend on carpet. 4. You will have to also purchase padding. Padding is sold in a roll that is only 6 feet wide. Determine how many rolls of padding you will need to cover your floors. 5. Total your cost of carpet and padding. Show your calculations. DO NOT JUST WRITE ANSWERS. PAINTING You are going to paint all the walls in the kitchen, living room, and 3 bedrooms. Each wall is 9 feet high. 1. Check a web-site for paint choices. Pick paint. In your report include the source of your paint, how many square feet each gallon covers, the price, and the date you checked prices. 2. Determine the area of the walls you will paint. (Again, use your π button on your calculator for the kitchen and round to 2 decimal places.) 5. Determine how many gallons of paint you will need. You are going to put 2 coats of paint on the walls. Remember to check the specs on the paint you choose to determine how many gallons it will cover. 6. Determine the cost of the paint. Again, show your calculations. DO NOT JUST WRITE ANSWERS. AIR CONDITIONING 1. Determine the volume of the whole house. Don t forget that you have a pyramid shape ceiling in the bedroom and a ½ cone shape ceiling in the kitchen 2.
