Dr Heather Way Bachelor of Applied Science - PhD Molecular Pathology, Fitgenes Certified Practitioner, Certified GAPS Nutritionist The DNA Doctor Personalised Health and Wellbeing Programs For individuals diagnosed with Autism Spectrum Disorder Powered by:
Dr Heather Way s Profile Dr Heather Way is a well qualified and experienced practitioner in the field of molecular pathology, nutrition and has two children of her own on the autism spectrum. > > PhD in Molecular Pathology > > Certified GAPS Nutritionist > > Fitgenes Certified Practitioner Heather has extensive experience dealing with: > > Autism spectrum disorders ranging from non-verbal to Asperger s syndrome. > > ADHD > > Anxiety > > Eczema > > Food intolerances > > Fussy eaters > > Gut issues (IBS, constipation etc) > > Sensory issues Nutrigenomics for ASD is Autism the perfect combination of all my passions. Nutrition Pathology Nutrigenomics 2
What is Nutrigenomics? Nutrigenomics is an exciting new science using food to modify genetic expression. Using the analogy of a genetic alphabet we can say that: > DNA is made up of just four letters which are arranged together in the body like sentences. > We look at the spelling of your DNA to spot any typos. > These typos are called SNPs or Single Nucleotide Polymorphisms. > We then begin to look at the genes proven to be associated with Autism Spectrum Disorder, using peer reviewed scientific research. > > Risk factors can then be identified based on an understanding the genes. > > Not only does food provide nutrition and fuel for the body, food chemicals can also switch genes on and off. > > Specific dietary interventions can then be used to alter sub-optimal gene expression and optimise health. 3
Who Can Benefit? Personalised healthcare is an exciting new approach toward the health and wellbeing of children and individuals diagnosed with autism. Specifically, participants and practitioners collectively benefit from: > A greater insight into the individual responses to the influence and potential impact of inflammation, oxidative stress, fat metabolism, methylation and Vitamin D metabolism on health and wellbeing. > The ability for practitioners to design personalised and targeted interventions to help improve individual health and wellbeing. > Contributing to the development of a new approach that examines the underlying factors that may be influencing the health and wellbeing of individuals diagnosed with autism. Who can we help? > > Do you have an ASD diagnosis and don t know what to do next? > > Have you tried lots of therapies and feel frustrated with progress? > > Do you feel there is more potential to be unlocked in your child? > > Are you on a special diet but haven t had a breakthrough? > > Are you interested in scientifically-proven, natural, food-based interventions? > > Would you like to look for, and treat the cause of the issues, rather than band-aiding the symptoms? The main feature of our approach that separates us from others is that it is science-based, DNA-centric and a holistic treatment that uses only food and not drugs! We look at the problem from the bottom-up and not top-down. We look for parts of the DNA that are not working correctly and look to up-regulate or down-regulate them to work as they should. Dr Heather Way 4
DNA Profile and Pathology The genetic profiling process: 1. Take a DNA swab; - A 30 second painless cheek swab - Swabs can be done in clinic in Brisbane or do it yourself. DNA kits can be posted anywhere in Australia. We have comprehensive instructions and a how to YouTube video available. - The swab is then posted to the Fitgenes. 2. DNA sequence runs are every 2nd Monday of the month. - The swab is then analysed. 3. DNA results are returned to Dr Heather Way within 10 days and ed to you. 4. Consultation arranged to explain the DNA results and intervention planning. - Consultations can be in clinic in Brisbane, - Or via Skype - using shared screens for interstate or travel-constrained clients. In addition to the genetic profiling, pathology may be required to allow Dr Way to understand the key areas to focus on and which Nutrigenomic interventions are the priority. The pathology is important and may be recommended to be undertaken at the beginning of the program and again towards the end, to track the efficiency of the interventions. Dr Way will outline this process on a case-by-case basis. The main areas of assessment within the DNA profile are: > > Inflammation > > Oxidative stress > > Methylation > > Vitamin D > > Detoxification > > Metabolism 5
Testimonial As both a physician and the father of an Autistic child, I have found the science of nutrigenomics to be both fascinating and incredibly beneficial. Although prior testing of my son had revealed evidence of numerous areas of pathology, his genetic testing actually explained how and why his descent into such a devastating illness had been waiting for the right environmental factors to push him off the precipice. Utilizing the recommended nutritional supplements provided by a Fitgenes practitioner and my son s genetic profile, we have been able to identify the minimum number of supplements necessary to continue his healing process. We continue to see improvements daily as he recovers from his metabolic, oxidative, inflammatory, and gastrointestinal issues. The upstream approach advocated by Fitgenes is a truly revolutionary approach and obviates the need for providing so many of the downstream support supplements. My conviction is certainly evidenced by my decision to travel halfway around the globe to become certified as a practitioner myself; and to also meet the wonderful people associated with Fitgenes and even its prescient creators. Dr Christopher Kennedy MD Ann Arbor, Michigan. USA September
Testimonial As well as being on the autism spectrum, Mia was diagnosed at age three and a half with Rett Syndrome. At that point in time her epilepsy was debilitating so it made any kind of intervention very difficult. She was having hundreds of seizures a day and her life was more about maintaining her safety. So initially intervention was more of a wish or a dream, rather than a reality. There was nothing that we were doing that would address the underlying physiological issues that Mia had. When I was introduced to the Fitgenes Autism Initiative program it was like the thing I d been searching for, it really was. It certainly has had a positive impact in terms of the amount of seizures she has and the recovery period. Over the last six months, Mia s definitely more focused and she s engaging a lot more with people. She s continually reaching important milestones in her life. We are certainly on the right path in terms of Mia s health and addressing the underlying issues that are affecting her ability to learn. Hayley December 2013 For more information, find the video link to Mia s Story on page 8. 7

These video clips remain on a private link to protect the children s privacy. They are used, with parent permission, to encourage other parents on the program. They show what is possible if you are prepared to make the dietary changes and stick to the supplementation protocol. 9 Frequently Asked Questions Does my DNA change? A. No, your DNA doesn t change so only one DNA kit is required. We can nutrigenomically modify your gene expression, but this is not a permanent change. When the food has left the body, your genes are as they were. Perhaps one day science will find a more lasting change, but for now to produce a result you need to remain on the supplements for support. Can you cure Autism? A. Unfortunately no. No one can cure Autism. There are many modalities including diet that help enormously with managing the symptoms of Autism. Nutrigenomics is foundational. When we get the genes working properly and reduce oxidative stress and inflammation etc we start to see many improvements in fundamental areas. How much do the supplements cost? A. This is an individual cost, depending on what your DNA requires. However, the average is around $5 per day. I can t get to the Brisbane clinic, can Dr Heather Way see me? A. Yes. Dr Way has clients all over Australia. She can collect DNA by post and have your consultations over Skype or phone. Can you do my whole family and is it cheaper? A. Yes, we often get asked to analyse the whole family s DNA. It is cheaper to do it at the same time. The DNA test cost is the same - $545 per family member. However, the family consultations cover the whole family at once in just two extended consults, so they are far cheaper in the long run. 9
