2 Information Welcome to the first NordMin PhD- course on sustainability in the mining sector, within a Nordic context. The course is organised as part of the NordMin project funded by the Nordic Council of Ministers for the period One ambition with the NordMin project is to build a network of excellence in the Nordic countries related to sustainable mining. In this respect we would like to create platforms and areas where stakeholders meet to discuss mining and mineral extraction from a sustainability perspective. The Nordic context means that issues such as extreme conditions (from a technical perspective and in terms of climate), environmental impact and indigeneous peoples rights should be adressed together with CSR standards and the image of the extractive industry. One such platform will be PhD courses organised in different Nordic countries over the lifespan of the project. This first course will cover a wide range of topics related to sustainability. We will discuss the mining industry from a social, environmental and economic perspective, with a focus on the Nordic countries. The course is mainly offered as lectures with discussions, but will also include student excersises and topics that will be reported by the students at the end of the course. Lecturers are well known experts in their fields, primarily from Sweden and the Nordic countries, but also from other countries. We believe that this will be a unique opportunity for Nordic students to meet, network and discuss sustainability in relation to mining. We therefore hope that we will attract students with different backgrounds and from many disciplines from all the Nordic countries. Scholarships NordMin will offer 20 scholarships to Nordic students. Eligible for scholarships are students that in their thesis work in one way or another are studying the mining industry in a broad context. We invite students from the full value chain from exploration, mining, mineral processing, metallurgy, environmental aspects, social and societal aspects, political and economic aspects. A grant will be maximum Dkr and should cover travel and accomodation. If you are interested in applying for a scholarship you should send your application via e- mail to Betty Christakopoulou, Betty.christakopoulou@ltu.se (project leader NordMin) before November 20. The application should contain a brief

3 description of your PhD- topic and a brief summary of the costs (travel, accomodation) for which the scholarship will be used. Successful applicants will be notified on November 21. Travel The venue for the course is Luleå University of Technology, located in the municipality of Luleå in the north of Sweden. Luleå can be reached by air (SAS and Norwegian have several daily flights to Luleå from Stockholm Arlanda airport) and by train or bus from many directions. Luleå is located approximately 900 km north of Stockholm and will probably be in winter mode in December so plan your trips accordingly! Accomodation You are requested to book your own accomodation. Luleå offers many possibilities from first class hotels to cheaper hostels. Maximum 20 PhD- students will be accepted on a first come first served basis, but we will also strive for a country and subject balance among the students.
