No matter their size or shape, leaves take in air and sunlight. 3 The hardest, tallest part of the tree is the trunk. The trunk holds up the tree. Tiny tubes inside the trunk move water and nutrients throughout the tree. The bark is the part of the trunk that we see. The bark protects the tubes from animals and from hot and cold weather. 4 The roots of the tree grow deep into the soil. They keep the tree from falling over. Roots also have little tubes inside. They take in water and nutrients from the dirt and move them up into the trunk. 5 Seeds are another tree part. They fall on the ground and start to grow. 3 Read the text and answer the questions. From Eggs to Frogs Frog Eggs Frogs are interesting animals. Frogs lay eggs in a lake. They lay thousands of eggs at one time. Fish may eat some of the eggs, but many will become tadpoles. After nine days, tadpoles come out of the eggs. Tadpoles The tadpoles live in weeds in the water that is not very deep. They have tails, use gills to breathe in the water, and eat very small plants. By the time they are twelve weeks old, tadpoles have changed a lot. First they grow back legs. A little while later they will have front legs too. Their lungs are ready to breathe air when they are on land. Soon tadpoles will lose their tails. Frogs Now they have become frogs. They live on the land and eat insects and worms. They breathe with their lungs. They have four legs that are used for jumping. They also use their legs and feet to swim. They are great swimmers. Frogs live on the land, but they are still able to swim a long way in the water. Sometimes they rest in the water, with only their eyes showing. People have to look very hard to see them. Soon some of these frogs will go back to the water to lay eggs.

5 Frog or Toad Do you know how to tell the difference between a frog and toad? Actually, a toad IS a frog! Toads are members of the frog family and are amphibians but they are not what we consider true frogs. A true frog has moist, smooth skin. A toad s skin is dry and bumpy. Toads do know a trick, though. Their skin has a poison to stop bigger animals from eating them. Frogs have skinny bodies while a toad s body is usually wide. The next time you see one of these wonderful creatures, take a minute to see if you can figure out if it a true frog or a toad. 13) What is the main idea of the text Frog or Toad? a.
