Grade 2 Unit 3 Exploring Informational Text Name: Date: Score: Comprehension: /14 1 All trees have the same parts. Parts of a Tree 2 The leaves are the green parts of the tree. No matter their size or shape, leaves take in air and sunlight. 3 The hardest, tallest part of the tree is the trunk. The trunk holds up the tree. Tiny tubes inside the trunk move water and nutrients throughout the tree. The bark is the part of the trunk that we see. The bark protects the tubes from animals and from hot and cold weather. 4 The roots of the tree grow deep into the soil. They keep the tree from falling over. Roots also have little tubes inside. They take in water and nutrients from the dirt and move them up into the trunk. 5 Seeds are another tree part. They fall on the ground and start to grow. A tiny seed will one day grow into a new tree. leaves trunk roots 1. How does the diagram help you understand the text? a. The diagram has a caption. b. 2 2. In paragraph 3, the word bark means.. a. Something a dog does b. A part of the tree trunk. 3. How do you know what bark means in this text? 4. What do the leaves of the tree do? a. 3 Read the text and answer the questions. From Eggs to Frogs Frog Eggs Frogs are interesting animals. Frogs lay eggs in a lake. They lay thousands of eggs at one time. Fish may eat some of the eggs, but many will become tadpoles. After nine days, tadpoles come out of the eggs. Tadpoles The tadpoles live in weeds in the water that is not very deep. They have tails, use gills to breathe in the water, and eat very small plants. By the time they are twelve weeks old, tadpoles have changed a lot. First they grow back legs. A little while later they will have front legs too. Their lungs are ready to breathe air when they are on land. Soon tadpoles will lose their tails. Frogs Now they have become frogs. They live on the land and eat insects and worms. They breathe with their lungs. They have four legs that are used for jumping. They also use their legs and feet to swim. They are great swimmers. Frogs live on the land, but they are still able to swim a long way in the water. Sometimes they rest in the water, with only their eyes showing. People have to look very hard to see them. Soon some of these frogs will go back to the water to lay eggs.

7. Which statement summarizes the main idea of this text? a. How frog eggs become frogs. b. Tadpoles are cute. c. After nine days, tadpoles come out of the eggs. d. Tadpoles live in the weeds. 8. Frogs have four legs that are used for jumping. b. They have tails, use gills to breathe in water, and eat very small plants. c. The tadpoles have become frogs. 10. What paragraph would you read if you wanted to know more about where tadpoles live? a. Paragraph 1 b. Paragraph 2 c. Paragraph How does the diagram in From Eggs to Frogs help you understand the text?

Frog or Toad Do you know how to tell the difference between a frog and toad? Actually, a toad IS a frog! Toads are members of the frog family and are amphibians but they are not what we consider true frogs. A true frog has moist, smooth skin. A toad s skin is dry and bumpy. Toads do know a trick, though. Their skin has a poison to stop bigger animals from eating them. Frogs have skinny bodies while a toad s body is usually wide. The next time you see one of these wonderful creatures, take a minute to see if you can figure out if it a true frog or a toad. 13) What is the main idea of the text Frog or Toad? a. The differences between a frog and a toad. b. That frogs are better than toads. c. That amphibians have either moist, smooth skin or dry, bumpy skin.

14) The text From Eggs to Frogs is similar to the text Frog or Toad because they both give you information about frogs. How is what you learned about frogs in From Eggs to Frogs different than what you learned about frogs in Frog or Toad?

Answer Key The standard(s) assessed in each question is/are in parentheses at the end of the line. Passage 1 1. B-The diagram shows you the parts of a tree using labels. (1 point) (RI.5,RI.7) 2. B-A part of the tree trunk (1 point) (RI.4) 3. How do you know what the bark means in this text? (RI.4) 1 Student is able to provide at least one reason for knowing what bark means. A correct response can include one or more of the following: There is nothing in the text about a dog. The text is all about trees. The bark is the part of the trunk that we see. I used text features (title, diagram) or context clues ( part of the trunk ) to help me. 0 No response or response includes a phrase from the text on in their own words that does not tell what bark means (i.e. The bark protects the tubes, OR The trunk holds up the tree. ) 4. D-Take in air and sunlight. (1 point) (RI.1, RI.5) 5. Light that comes from the sun. (1 point) (2.L.4d) 6. It keeps the bark safe (or something similar) (1 point) (2.L.4a) Passage 2 7. A- How a frog egg grows into a frog. (RI.2) 8. C- Tadpoles change a lot (RI.2) 9. C- The tadpoles have become frogs. (RI.2) 10. B Paragraph 2 (RI.5) 11. (RI.7) 1 Student is able to provide at least one way that the diagram helps them understand the text. A correct response can include one or more of the following: It shows a picture of what the frog looks like at each stage. It shows you the order of the stages. It shows you what an egg, a tadpole and a frog look like. 0 Incorrect or irrelevant information

Passage A- The differences between a frog and a toad. (RI.2) 14. (RI.9) 2 Response tells the differences between the two texts by using main ideas in their response. For example: In From Eggs to Frogs I learned about a frog s life cycle (or about how a frog egg grows into a frog) and in Frog or Toad I learned about how frogs and toads are different. 1 Response states differing facts from the two texts but does not state main idea or overall message. For example: In From Eggs to Frogs I learned that tadpoles come out of their eggs in 9 weeks. In Frog or Toad I learned that frogs have skinny bodies and toads usually have wide bodies. 0 Response only gives information about one text or is incorrect
