3 Drumbeat Workshops Programme for Parents of Children with Autism " Month Term Theme Led by Suggested date & time Location September Autumn 1 Coffee Morning with Project 17 for parents with no recourse to public funds Project 17 are an organisation supporting families experiencing hardship due to their immigration status and having No Recourse to Public Funds. A representative from the charity will be coming along to share information at a coffee morning hosted at Drumbeat Downham. If you would like to find out more about the support available please come along. Katie Cornell (Deputy Head) & Project 17 Thursday 24 th September 2015 " November Autumn 2 Getting a better night's sleep - sleep issues for children and young people with Autism This workshop will be led by our School Nurse Rowan Ring and Occupational Therapist Rosie Hallett. We will be looking at some of the most common sleep problems that children and young people with Autism experience, how this affects the rest of the family, and what strategies might help you to cope. Late to bed, early risers, sleeping in the wrong bed -whatever your experience come along and meet some other parents who know how you feel! 4 November Autumn 2 Girls with ASD & Puberty This workshop will give parents and carers the opportunity to focus on the particular needs of girls with ASD as they approach puberty.""we will consider how to manage and communicate about periods and hormonal and bodily changes, and also think about growing up and relationships, and the impact for this particularly for girls with ASD at Drumbeat.""There will be plenty of opportunity for parents and carers to share their own experiences and insights, as well as hearing from our school nurse and psychologist Kathryn Stevenson Clinical Psychologist) & Rowan Ring School Nurse) Friday 27 th November 2015 " December Autumn 2 Special occasions & changes to routine for children and YP with ASD This workshop will focus on how to use visuals to prepare your child/young person for changes in their regular routine and special events such as birthdays, holidays etc. Sonia Gannon (Lead Outreach Teacher) Thursday 3 rd December 2015 "

5 January Spring 1 Boys with ASD & Puberty This workshop will be really useful for parents and carers of young men who are going through puberty. There will be opportunities to discuss particular difficulties associated with ASD and going through puberty. Rowan and Andy will be able to show some of the work that is done in school and offer advice and strategies that can be used at home to support these young men as they travel into adult life. Andy Brown (Behaviour Instructor) & Rowan Ring School Nurse) Tuesday 19 th January am "11am January Spring 1 Social Media& E-Safety for YP with ASD This workshop is for parents of young people with Autism to come along and learn more about the different social media available on the Internet e.g. twitter, facebook, snapchat & instagram in order to raise awareness of what their young people are able to access at home from their phones, ipads/tablets, laptops and computers. This workshop will include information on E- Safety, highlighting some of the pitfalls and more dangerous elements with a focus on how to keep young people safe when they are using social media. 6 February Spring 2 Learning, communicating and playing: There's an app for that! This workshop is run by our school speech and language therapist and occupational therapist. The therapists will talk about Ipad and mobile technology apps that are available to help fine motor skills, play, social skills and communication.""there will also be a chance to try out some of the recommended apps. Feel free to bring along your own ipad or tablet to share some of the ways you use it at home with your child. Hannah Robinson Speech & Language Rosie Hallett Occupational Therapist) Monday 29 th February March Spring 2 Independent Travel for YP with ASD This workshop can help Drumbeat students and families with understanding about independent travel. We will discuss how to overcome some of the barriers with independent travel and look at some of the benefits and also the safety aspects of students travelling independently. There may be a who will share his/her own personal experiences of making the step to travelling independently. 7 April Summer 1 Attention Autism at home This workshop will be run by the school speech and language therapist, Hannah and Attention Autism practitioner and class teacher, Amy. Hannah and Amy will talk about how attention skills develop. They will share activities you can do at home that will give your child irresistible invitations to learn and communicate with you. Hannah Robinson Speech & Language Amy Gianotta (Regional Trainer in AA) Monday 18 th April 2016 " May Summer 1 Sensory Challenges in everyday life for children & YP with ASD This workshop will be led by Rosie Hallett our school Occupational Therapist and Emma Donovan-Brown Early Years Outreach Teacher. We will be looking at how sensory differences in children and young people with autism affect day to day life at home and at school. Hair washing, dressing, visiting the supermarket, eating, and many more everyday activities can be overwhelming for many of our students. 8 June Summer 2 Social stories Make and Take session Come along to an informative and practical workshop on social stories. You will learn about the principles of social stories as a strategy to assist children and young people with autism to understand specific concepts and social situations. You will then have the opportunity to create and make a social story to take home and use with your child or young person. Denise Gallagher (Head of Primary) & Michele Edwards (Class Teacher) Friday 17 th June 2016 " July Summer 2 Taking Care of Number One - looking after yourself. This session is a chance to enjoy a bit of relaxation and think about how to take some time for yourself. Parents of children and young people with Autism have some of the highest stress levels of all parents, so take an hour out in our sensory room for a bit of massage and"meditation before the summer holidays begin.
