Key Points 1. Long Term Operations of NPP greater than 40 years is a reality in the United States 2. NPP are safely operated by implementation of the Current Licensing Basis (CLB) and Aging Management Programs 3. Aging Management Programs are maintained current through the use of operating experience and corrective action programs 4. Operating NPP beyond 60 years is technically feasible 5. United States NPP owners are planning to apply for licenses to operate beyond 60 years 4
US License Renewal Industry Status 75 units approved; 19 units under NRC review First unit operated beyond 40 years starting in units operating beyond 40 years at end of 2014 Overall Aging Management Programs have been effectively implemented Obtaining Licenses for beyond 60 years is the next step 5

License Renewal Rule 10 CFR 54 The License Renewal Rule Safety Application Part 54 Environmental Report Part 51 Application may not be submitted until the plant has operated for 20 years New license can be extended 20 years beyond current license 10 CFR (d): a renewed license can subsequently be renewed Existing rule is adequate and proven for Second License Renewal 7
License Renewal Rule Principles The regulatory process is adequate to ensure that the current licensing basis provides an acceptable level of safety, with the possible exception of the detrimental effects of aging on certain systems, structures, and components, and Each plant's current licensing basis is required to be maintained during the renewal term. 8 8

EPRI Report Assessment of R&D Supporting Aging Management Programs for Long-Term Operations Three categories of AMPs Category 1 R&D support to address knowledge gaps for 60 to 80 years operation to better understand and manage materials performance Category 2 R&D supporting role where aging degradation is well characterized Category 3 No New R&D role identified EPRI & DOE have concluded that there are no generic show stoppers for SLR. Only 8 AMPs were identified as Category 1. This means that the existing AMP is sufficient to detect aging effects and will continue to be improved with ongoing research. 16
