2 Software Technology Give your career in industry a boost The high-tech industry is constantly changing. Changes in customer, economic, health, security, energy, and legislative demands require existing products to be adapted and upgraded for compliance. The emergence of new technologies means there are many exciting opportunities for innovative products and new business. These developments result in increasing product complexity and therefore the need for highly skilled persons. Technological designers and architects can handle this complexity and lead the process of creating and delivering new high-tech products. Most high-tech products nowadays involve a great deal of software. As a technological designer, you can have the rewarding task of translating new ideas and plans into software and system designs. When you want to pursue such a career as a newly graduated MSc, you will have a long way to go. However, the Stan Ackermans Institute Post-Master technological designer programmes, and the Software Technology (ST) programme in particular, will prepare you for such a career and give you a jumpstart. ST: learning how to apply theory Computer Science Masters have a lot of theoretical knowledge and can easily find their way in the scientific literature. But to put theory into practice to solve real industrial problems is quite a different matter. In industry, you will only have a limited amount of time to come up with a solution, a limited budget to work with and a number of colleagues from other disciplines such as mechanical or electrical engineers who you need to collaborate with. After all, most consumer products (cars, telephones) are not software only. Most Computer Science Masters find this very difficult. It takes time, training and experience to be able to face these challenges. The ST programme focuses specifically on these aspects in training you as a creative technological designer. After this two-year programme, you ll be able to make a jumpstart and prove yourself as a software designer in one of the high-tech multinationals or the smaller, innovative companies in the Eindhoven area and beyond. Fast track to a higher level During the ST programme you will be exposed to and actively involved in applying technologies to an extent that would never be possible if you were only working in industry. You will be solving software problems for customers from different domains, such as physics, electronics and mechanical engineering. To gain the same experience, if possible at all, would take many more years in industry. The ST programme is unique: dedicated courses, industrial assignments, and lecturers who are active in the high-tech industry as designers, architects or entrepreneurs. As a technological designer trainee you will receive a salary of around 1700 gross per month. After successfully completing our programme, you will be granted the degree of Professional Doctorate in Engineering (PDEng). At the university: courses and industry projects During the first fifteen months you ll be learning new technologies and broadening and deepening your knowledge of technological architecture and design. About half the time you will be working on real problems from industry that are proposed to us by our industrial partners at big companies (such as ASML, FEI, and NXP), innovative spin-outs (such as ViNotion ) or by our contacts with large software intensive research collaborations ( such as CERN, NIKHEF, PreMaDoNa, and TechUnited ). Many of the solutions proposed by our trainees have found their way into actual products. During the projects, you will be working in teams, as is customary in industry. You will solve the problems and realize industry quality solutions as a team. You will learn all the facets of
3 Visualisation of the blood flow in the aorta using glyphs team work. The team work is supported by non-technical courses and professional development. The other half of the time you will be following courses and workshops, led by our lecturers who have several decades of worldwide design experience with high-tech companies. The lecture programme is tuned to provide the background needed in the industry projects (and vice versa). Many of our lecturers are involved in the projects as coaches, showing you how to turn academic theory into industrial solutions. Topics such as software architecture, design, and engineering will recur a number of times during these fifteen months. In industry: design project You ll spend the last nine months in industry working on a challenging and innovative technological design project a real problem that needs to be solved. This project integrates a number of (sub) disciplines. You ll be supervised by designers from industry as well as by university staff. So you re supported by scientific knowledge, practical design experience and project management expertise. Application You re eligible to apply for the programme if you ve graduated from a Dutch Master s programme in Computer Science or a closely related discipline, or if you ve graduated from a programme outside of the Netherlands that is considered an equivalent to the Dutch Master programme. All courses in the programme are taught in English. A course in Dutch is part of the programme. The ST programme is a programme of the department of Mathematics and Computer Science of the Eindhoven University of Technology. Visit the website for detailed information.
4 Emma Song PDEng ST Graduate 2009 Roel Truyen Supervisor to ST trainees Director Clinical Science Oncology Patient Care and Clinical Informatics Philips Healthcare Undertaking the quest for solutions together ST helped me to adapt to the Dutch environment and prepared me for a job in industry After my Master study in Embedded Software Systems at Zhejiang University in China, I wanted to further develop my skills in the software domain. Studying for a PhD was an option of course, but I rather wanted to work in industry. Through my boyfriend who was looking for a post-graduate programme as well I came to know about the designer programme Software Technology (ST). We were both admitted to and graduated from a designer programme at TU/e. What I like best about the ST programme is the close contact with a company and the teamwork during the projects. I didn t have much experience in working in companies when I gained my Master s. The ST programme helped me to adapt to the Dutch environment and prepared me for a job in industry. ST offers a bridge from university to industry. The multicultural aspect of the programme is also an advantage. Working with many different nationalities enables you to learn a lot from each other because of all the different angles. Besides that, it s fun to work with people from different cultures. I did my final project at Philips Healthcare. My job was to redesign the architecture of a software product. I enjoyed my time at Philips very much. I learned a lot from my colleagues and designing software architecture was exactly what I wanted to do. In the future, I would like to become an architect. I first came into contact with the Software Technology (ST) designer programme around six years ago via my manager at Philips Healthcare. He asked if I would be interested in supervising PDEng trainees. Before then we had worked with PhD s and Master s students on a regular basis, but the design assignments for PDEng trainees are of a different caliber and that is something I found challenging. Together with a few of my colleagues, I supervise two to three trainees each year. Our department has now supervised around ten trainees so far. The nice thing about being a supervisor is the exploratory nature of the assignments. In the course of a design project the trainee joins us in the search for an answer to the question what is it that we actually want? It is not just about the how but also, and largely, about the what. It concerns projects that are not contained within our focus and for which we have no solution ourselves. The trainee s solution is, therefore, often surprising. I find it interesting to take that journey towards a solution together. A trainee has to be independent and socially competent. The trainee is expected to make contacts and build up a network. As a trainee you also learn to deal with conflicting input, to think from a variety of perspectives and to express your decisions in the right way. It may occasionally be tricky but it will certainly prepare you well for your work as a designer in industry.
5 Graduates 2010 Software Technology programme. It s largely the interaction working with a team to solve a problem that appeals to me. Having completed my two-year Software Technology (ST) designer programme in 1996, I felt ready to take on the job of technological designer in industry. The first year of my ST studies in 1994 involved a broad package of content: not just computer science, but also electrical engineering, physics and management. You take courses like technical writing and editing and you engage in discussions with people from industry. You work on challenging cases with a multidisciplinary team, looking at a problem from a range of angles. In the second year you put your knowledge into practice with a traineeship at a company. In my case that was Philips TASS (currently known as TASS Software Professionals), where I spent my nine months working on the development of a standalone multimedia player. I stayed on at TASS after gaining my PDEng degree, with responsibility for various projects in the field of software development. I now work at ASML as a team leader of a cluster that is responsible for software that keeps the central computer in the ASML machines running. A key aspect of this job is to coach people. It s largely the interaction working with a team to solve a problem that appeals to me. As a PDEng you have an enormous head start on Master s graduates. As a technological designer you have experience with project-based and multidisciplinary work, something that really interests employers in the technology sector. I m still active for ST. As chairman of the XOOTIC alumni association I am the face of the association. Within ASML, too, I m involved in defining design projects for trainees from ST. This means that I am still virtually part of the designer programme. Gertjan Schouten PDEng ST Graduate 1996 and chairman XOOTIC alumni association
