2 Recycling is getting easier The way you use your bins and boxes is changing Communal recycling bins will make it easier to sort your recycling. They will also accept more mixed recycling and types of plastic. Plastic pots, tubs and trays Envelopes Aerosols Changing Mixed recycling bin Green lidded communal bins will accept paper, cardboard, plastic bottles (including lids), pots, tubs and trays, tins and cans, aerosols, juice cartons and foil. We can t accept plastic bags or bin bags. Thank you for already helping us to recycle 40% of Edinburgh s waste. This makes a huge difference to our environment. More than 70% of our household waste can be recycled, so we re making improvements to your communal recycling bins to help you recycle more and send less waste to landfill. The bins will accept glass and mixed recycling, as well as more types of plastic, such as bottles, pots, tubs and trays. You ll still be able to recycle your food waste too. Glass recycling bin Purple lidded communal bins will accept glass bottles and jars. We can t accept plastic bags or bin bags. Food recycling bin Grey lidded communal food recycling bins will accept food waste. You can bag your food waste in plastic or compostable bags or wrap it in news paper. You can keep your boxes if you wish or take them to a community recycling centre. 5 Frequently asked questions Why are we making changes? The changes will make it easier for you to recycle more. The Scottish Government has set a challenging target to recycle 70% of household waste by We already recycle 40% of Edinburgh s waste, but we need to start recycling more. Recycling is better for our environment as it means less waste is sent to landfill sites. These sites produce gas which damages the environment. What do I do if I have extra waste that won t fit in the communal bins? If you have extra waste or recycling you can take it, free of charge, to one of Edinburgh s three community recycling centres at Sighthill, Seafield or Craigmillar. You can also recycle more types of materials at these centres, such as large electrical items, metal, furniture and paint. How do I dispose of large items such as furniture? If you have unwanted furniture, such as sofas or fridges, please call the National re-use phoneline on Your item will be collected free of charge by a local reuse organisation to be used by someone who needs it. The types of items commonly collected by the phone line include sofas, chairs, tables, wardrobes, white goods and beds that are still in good condition. To ensure your item can be collected, please check that sofas and armchairs have their fire tags still in place to comply with regulations around re-sale, and ensure items are not broken or damaged and are kept inside. Alternatively you can arrange for the uplift of bulky items by using our special uplift service. Visit our website for more information or call Remember Leaving bags of waste or unwanted items, such as furniture, in the street or beside bins is an offence and can result in a fine of up to 200. What should I do if the communal bins are full or overflowing? If your communal bin is overflowing or full please report it online, In the meantime you should use an alternative bin on a nearby street. Do not dump waste on the street or beside bins. 7 8

6 What happens to our recycling and waste? Mixed recycling and glass Paper is sent to a paper mill where it is processed back into newsprint. Tins and cans are recycled back into new tins and cans. Glass is reprocessed and made into new glass jars and bottles. Cardboard is made into packaging. Plastics are turned into new plastic products. Food waste Your food waste is turned into liquid fertiliser and compost. It is also used to create bio-gas that is turned into energy. Landfill waste In Edinburgh around 60% of your household waste is taken to a landfill site in Dunbar. We want to reduce this as it creates harmful gas which damages our environment. Community recycling centres You can recycle and take other household rubbish to our community recycling centres. Bankhead Avenue, Sighthill, EH11 4EA Fillyside Road, Seafield, EH7 6RD Old Dalkeith Road, Craigmillar, EH16 4TB Opening hours 8am pm Monday to Friday 8am - 6pm Saturday and Sunday Vehicle access Cars or single axle trailers carrying household waste are allowed at all sites. Vans and double axle trailers carrying household waste are only allowed at Sighthill and Seafield. To find out more about what items you can take to our recycling centres call us on or visit our website

7 Further information We re here to help.
