3 Health and Care: Hidden Champion of structural change in the past and most promising sector for the future of jobs, quality of life and sustainable growth? service housing Sports and leisure medtec & gerontological products biotec management hospitals and self- practitioners help in- & outpatient healthcare trade in medical rehabilitation, products health resorts pharmaceutical industry healthy nutrition wellness medical handcraft pharmacies health tourism consulting services Vast and differential set of (sub)branches, far more than just hospitals, doctors & nurses With 6.2 Mio jobs by far the largest sector of the German economy Hidden Champion of the economy in the last 20 years; 1 Mio new Jobs Driving forces are aging, medical innovations and growing health consciousness Recent trend: Non-health branches try to upgrade their products by adding health components. 4 The gods don't allow success to come easily Healthcare businesses will continue to grow if... productivity in health care (prevention, healing, LTC) increases, i.e. becomes better and more efficient; health and age related services become significantly more integrated; it stimulates innovations in other business sectors than health care, i.e. housing; an advanced spirit and capacity for collaboration can be developed and established; there is support by adequate health, R&D, economic & industrial policies less austerity, more focused investments. adequate means of digitalization becomes part of a patient and work oriented redesign of care Institute for Work and Technology 4

5 Health Businesses: Probably the biggest & most promising application area of digitalisation The main application areas of digitalisation / Internet of things / Economy 4.0 / cyber-physical systems: Smart Factory: intelligently connected manufacturing firm Smart Mobility: connected mobility arrangements, driverless cars Smart Health: remote diagnosis, ICT-based solutions to support care at home, IT-intelligence to figure out personalized precision prevention & healing means Smart Homes & Smart Cities: Connected interaction of flats, houses, neighbourhoods, cities Smart Grids: more efficiency in power supply through connected dezentralised power plants & networks (see Geisberger/Broy 2012 und Bauernhansl 2014)

6 Digitalization and Health A first shot to overview the different construction sites Administrative integration & simplification: collect, manage & provide patient data electronically, across all sectors (e.g. patient recors or medical records Support diagnostics, therapeutic interventions & care in hospitals & nursing homes (e.g. intelligent beds or surgical robots)... and in the outreach applications, across great distances, outside of hospitals or doctors offices (e.g. telemedicine) Expert systems (for example, IBM-Dr. Watson) AAL (Ambient / Active Assisted Living), i.e. to exploit ICT, to make flats, houses, neighborhoods safer, age friendly, healthier Knowledge for patients & LOHAS People: (Self) empowerment / quantified self Individualised medicine through analysis of data ("quantified self", supply data) and gigantic molecular biological data banks ("Big Data", genome analysis)

9 Mind the Deployment-Gap : EHealth@home in Germany: A broad R&D landscape is desperately waiting for successful implementation of its results. challenges Only approx. 70 of around 300 promising pilot projects ended up in offrering sustainable services. 10 Not less jobs, however: big changes in job profiles, work organization & professional hierarchies: A first shot on consequenses for the world of health work Many speculations, many fears, however no valid knowledge available: Basic ICT-knowledges as a must, even for 55-plus workers Probably no personnel cuts However: Very significant rearrangements of job profiles, professional hierarchies, work organisation, e.g. Upgrading of non-physician professions More jobs in out-patient health services More cross-over (multidisciplinary) competences More workload; still lot of fighting with disorganisation Very precise monitoring / controlling ( tracking ) of activities

11 Digitalization in Health Businesses: A challenge & opportunity for social dialogue, co-determinantions and PS-unions Labor interest representation (LRI) is focused on maintenance of health and safety standards ( corrective apporach ). Digitalization will significantly change the complete design and governance of health (care) work. LIR in times of digitalization has the opportunities to make LRI a vital part the redesign process. This needs a shift in strategy: From a corrective to a proactive & foresighted system and work planning approach. Today PS-union have big problems with such a shift. However: vital professional and public debates on designing health care in times of digitalization have stated and are waiting for PS-unions input. To elaborate a vision/mission could be a starting point: Go for synergies between patient and workers orientation. Xd-i.com/Service Design Thinking/Design Thinking Traning
